Nodular Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in SIV-infected macaques.

Pneumocystis carinii (PC) pneumonia is a frequent manifestation of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in humans and macaques. An unusual nodular type of PC pneumonia was observed in two simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV)-inoculated rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta). These animals developed clinical signs of simian AIDS, including anorexia, weight loss, dyspnea, and collapse. Grossly, both animals had multifocal tan-white nodules 1-10 mm in diameter scattered throughout the lungs. One animal had similar nodules involving the diaphragm and thoracic wall. The lungs were characterized b

Non-Human Primates as Sentinels and Reservoirs of Emerging Zoonotic Diseases in Indonesia: A One Health Perspective on Pathogen Spillover, Surveillance Gaps, and Regulatory Frameworks.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Indonesia harbors extraordinary non-human primate (NHP) diversity, yet deforestation, ecotourism, illegal wildlife trade, and urban encroachment are intensifying human-NHP contact, elevating pathogen spillover risk. This review synthesizes evidence on NHP-associated zoonoses within a One Health framework and proposes an integrated biosurveillance roadmap. METHODS: A structured search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science (2000-2025), informed by the PRISMA-ScR framework and using pre-specified host, geographic, and pathogen search terms, was conducted and supplemented by

[Improving infection efficiency of adult cynomolgus monkey mesenchymal stem cells with lentiviral vectors].

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have received considerable attention for various therapeutic approaches in recent years. MSCs are also easy to genetically modify to express therapeutic genes by using lentiviral vectors. Because of the similarities in genetics, physiology and metabolism between non-human primates (NHPs) and humans, NHPs models are invaluable for researching human disorders and for developing therapeutic strategies. Therefore, MSCs derived from NHPs could be a powerful tool for cell therapy and genetic engineering. Studies from captive and free-ranging adult NHPs show that up to 1

Horizontal transmission of endemic viruses among rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta): Implications for human cytomegalovirus vaccine/challenge design.

INTRODUCTION: Rhesus macaques are natural hosts to multiple viruses including rhesus cytomegalovirus (RhCMV), rhesus rhadinovirus (RRV), and Simian Foamy Virus (SFV). While viral infections are ubiquitous, viral transmissions to uninfected animals are incompletely defined. Management procedures of macaque colonies include cohorts that are Specific Pathogen Free (SPF). Greater understanding of viral transmission would augment SPF protocols. Moreover, vaccine/challenge studies of human viruses would be enhanced by leveraging transmission of macaque viruses to recapitulate expected challenges of

Transmission of infectious viruses in the natural setting at human-animal interface.

Most viral pathogens causing epidemics and pandemics are zoonotic, emerging from wildlife reservoirs like SARS CoV2 causing the global Covid-19 pandemic, although animal origin of this virus remains a mystery. Cross-species transmission of pathogens from animals to humans is known as zoonosis. However, pathogens are also transmitted from humans to animals in regions where there is a close interaction between animals and humans by 'reverse transmission' (anthroponosis). Molecular evidence for the transmission of two zoonotic RNA viruses at the human-monkey interface in Rajasthan forests is pres

Myasthenia gravis accompanied by thymomas not related to foamy virus genome in Belarusian's patients.

The spectrum and features of neurological disorders have been changed due to the Chernobyl catastrophe in the Republic of Belarus. More recently neurologists in Belarus have noted a significant increase in the frequency of myasthenia gravis (MG) with concomitant rise in the thymomas. There is some evidence suggesting that retroviruses play a key role in the development and pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. This study analyzed thymomas from 45 MG patients from the Republic of Belarus by using PCR and primers for two regions of FV--gag and bel-2 genes. The results showed that none of the vari

Naturally acquired simian retrovirus infections in central African hunters.

BACKGROUND: Hunting and butchering of wild non-human primates infected with simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) is thought to have sparked the HIV pandemic. Although SIV and other primate retroviruses infect laboratory workers and zoo workers, zoonotic retrovirus transmission has not been documented in natural settings. We investigated zoonotic infection in individuals living in central Africa. METHODS: We obtained behavioural data, plasma samples, and peripheral blood lymphocytes from individuals living in rural villages in Cameroon. We did serological testing, PCR, and sequence analysis to

Risk of Viral Infectious Diseases from Live Bats, Primates, Rodents and Carnivores for Sale in Indonesian Wildlife Markets.

Southeast Asia is considered a global hotspot of emerging zoonotic diseases. There, wildlife is commonly traded under poor sanitary conditions in open markets; these markets have been considered 'the perfect storm' for zoonotic disease transmission. We assessed the potential of wildlife trade in spreading viral diseases by quantifying the number of wild animals of four mammalian orders (Rodentia, Chiroptera, Carnivora and Primates) on sale in 14 Indonesian wildlife markets and identifying zoonotic viruses potentially hosted by these animals. We constructed a network analysis to visualize the a

Induction of syncytia by the bovine C-type leukemia virus.

Bovine buffy coat cells infected with the bovine leukemia virus (BLV) induce syncytia formation in human diploid embryonic lung cells as well as in monolayer cell cultures of bovine, simian, ovine, bat, and caprine origin, but not in mouse fibroblast cells, normall rat kidney cells, or RSV-transformed rat cells. Syncytia were not observed in diploid embryonic lung cells inoculated with bovine buffy coat cells free of BLV. The syncytia-induction effect is associated with the synthesis of complete BLV by the buffy coat cells and is independent of whether these cells are viable, disrupted, normal

Retroviruses and inflammatory myopathies in humans and primates.

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the human T cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV-1), the human foamy retrovirus and the simian immunodeficiency viruses have been associated with the development of an inflammatory myopathy in humans and primates. The myopathy caused by HIV and HTLV-1 is not due to direct infection of the muscle by these viruses, but rather due to an immunopathologic process triggered by the viruses, mediated by autoaggressive CD8+ cells in the context of MHC-class I antigen expression. This has been based on a series of studies utilizing immunocytochemistry, in situ hybridizat

A Severe Bite From a Nonhuman Primate Is a Major Risk Factor for HTLV-1 Infection in Hunters From Central Africa.

BACKGROUND: HTLV-1 infection is endemic to Central African populations. The risk factors for HTLV-1 acquisition in humans via the interspecies transmission of STLV-1 (its simian counterpart) remain largely unknown. METHODS: We studied 269 individuals (254 men, 15 women) bitten by a nonhuman primate (NHP), mostly during hunting activities. These, Pygmies and Bantus, living in the southern Cameroonian rainforest, were matched for sex, age, and ethnicity with individuals from the same settlements reporting no NHP bites. HTLV-1 serology was performed by Western blot on plasma samples. PCR was car

Micropathogen community identification in ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) using third-generation sequencing.

Ticks are important vectors that facilitate the transmission of a broad range of micropathogens to vertebrates, including humans. Because of their role in disease transmission, it has become increasingly important to identify and characterize the micropathogen profiles of tick populations. The objective of the present study was to survey the micropathogens of ticks by third-generation metagenomic sequencing using the PacBio Sequel platform. Approximately 46.481 Gbp of raw micropathogen sequence data were obtained from samples from four different regions of Heilongjiang Province, China. The cle

Ultrastructural and molecular characterization of Pneumocystis carinii isolated from a rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta).

High levels of heterogeneity have been observed among isolates of Pneumocystis carinii derived from different mammalian host species. We report the characterization of P. carinii isolated from a rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta), which was immunosuppressed as a result of infection with a chimeric simian-human immunodeficiency virus (SHIVsbg). Histopathological examination showed evidence of severe P. carinii pneumonia with a large predominance of trophozoite forms. Alveolitis consisted of typical foamy, honeycomb exudate, with only a few alveolar macrophages. The lung inflammatory response was ra

Human foamy virus bel1 sequence in patients with autoimmune rheumatic diseases.

Since the association between human foamy virus (HFV) with rheumatic autoimmune diseases remains controversial, this study was designed to determine the relationship between HFV and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), or progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS). The bel1 and Pol sequences of HFV were measured by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in plasma and by PCR in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from patients with SLE, RA, and PSS. Antibodies against Bel1 and Pol were assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Active HFV infectio

[Mechanisms of viral emergence and interspecies transmission: the exemple of simian foamy viruses in Central Africa].

A large proportion of viral pathogens that have emerged during the last decades in humans are considered to have originated from various animal species. This is well exemplified by several recent epidemics such as those of Nipah, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, Avian flu, Ebola, Monkeypox, and Hantaviruses. After the initial interspecies transmission per se, the viruses can disseminate into the human population through various and distinct mechanisms. Some of them are well characterized and understood, thus allowing a certain level of risk control and prevention. Surprisingly and in contras

Similar patterns of infection with bovine foamy virus in experimentally inoculated calves and sheep.

Foamy viruses (FVs) are the least known retroviruses commonly found in primates, cats, horses, and cattle. Although FVs are considered apathogenic, simian and feline FVs have been shown to be associated with some transient health abnormalities in animal models. Currently, data regarding the course of infection with bovine FV (BFV) are not available. In this study, we conducted experimental infections of natural (cattle) and heterologous (sheep) hosts with the BFV(100) isolate and monitored infection patterns in both hosts during the early phase postinoculation as well as after long-term infect

Frequent and recent human acquisition of simian foamy viruses through apes' bites in central Africa.

Human infection by simian foamy viruses (SFV) can be acquired by persons occupationally exposed to non-human primates (NHP) or in natural settings. This study aimed at getting better knowledge on SFV transmission dynamics, risk factors for such a zoonotic infection and, searching for intra-familial dissemination and the level of peripheral blood (pro)viral loads in infected individuals. We studied 1,321 people from the general adult population (mean age 49 yrs, 640 women and 681 men) and 198 individuals, mostly men, all of whom had encountered a NHP with a resulting bite or scratch.
