Circular Valorization of Laurel and Myrtle Pruning Residues: Chemical Profiling, Phytotoxicity, and Ecotoxicological Assessment of Essential Oils for Sustainable Weed Management.

The valorization of medicinal and aromatic plant by-products represents a sustainable strategy to recover bioactive compounds and reduce agricultural waste. In this study, pruning residues of Laurus nobilis L. and Myrtus communis L. were investigated as sources of essential oils (EOs) for bio-based weed management. Leaves and young stems were subjected to anatomical, micromorphological, and histochemical analyses to ascertain that active secretory structures were maintained. EOs were then obtained by steam distillation and characterized by GC-FID and GC-MS. Phytotoxicity was evaluated on two c

Plant wounding affects the oviposition of Hellula undalis(F.). The impact of leaf chemistry.

Crucifer specialists, such as the tropical pest Hellula undalis (F.), developed a close association to their hosts and depend on characteristic secondary plant compounds, the glucosinolates (GS), in many cases. Following tissue damage, GS undergo hydrolysis catalyzed by the enzyme myrosinase to produce a complex array of products which include isothiocyantes, cyanides, and thiocyanates depending on reaction condition and the chemical nature of the side chain. We found that mechanical plant damage to the tropical crop plant Brassica campestris L. ssp. chinensis (pak-choi) leads to increased GS

The CRR1 nutritional copper sensor in Chlamydomonas contains two distinct metal-responsive domains.

Copper response regulator 1 (CRR1), an SBP-domain transcription factor, is a global regulator of nutritional copper signaling in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and activates genes necessary during periods of copper deficiency. We localized Chlamydomonas CRR1 to the nucleus in mustard (Sinapis alba) seedlings, a location consistent with its function as a transcription factor. The Zn binding SBP domain of CRR1 binds copper ions in vitro. Cu(I) can replace Zn(II), but the Cu(II) form is unstable. The DNA binding activity is inhibited in vitro by Cu(II) or Hg(II) ions, which also prevent activation of

Allelopathic effects and phytochemical analysis of Coleanthus subtilis as possible factors involved in its colonization success.

Coleanthus subtilis is a globally rare therophyte growing on exposed bottoms of water reservoirs and riverbanks. Despite its small size and ephemeral nature, it shows a potential to conquer new areas and can dominate phytocoenoses of small wetland therophytes and pioneer the land interface zones of lakes, pools and ponds. However, features enabling its spread and dominance in patches remain poorly understood. Also, the composition of biologically active compounds of the species has not been characterized in detail so far. Therefore, we assessed the species allelopathic potential as referred to

A functional ratio fluorescence sensor platform based on the graphene/Mn-ZnS quantum dots loaded with molecularly imprinted polymer for selective and visual detection sinapic acid.

A functional ratio fluorescence sensor based on the molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) coated double quantum dots (QDs) being composited of Mn-ZnS QDs and silica-coated graphene quantum dots (GQDs@SiO2) had been established for the sensitive, selective and visual detection of sinapic acid (SA). MIPs@Mn-ZnS/GQDs@SiO2 was synthesized through a simple one-pot sol-gel reaction, and it exhibited two fluorescence emission peaks with yellow fluorescence of Mn-ZnS QDs at 580 nm and the blue fluorescence of GQDs at 445 nm. SA can selectively enhance the fluorescence of GQDs but quench the Mn-ZnS QDs f

Chemical Characterization and Aquatic Toxicity of Firefighting Runoff-Linking Organic Profiling to Multi-Trophic Bioassays in the One Health Framework.

This study investigates the organic chemical content and ecological impact of firefighting runoff collected from real-world fire scenarios. To establish a direct link between chemical composition and environmental hazard, a comprehensive analytical framework was employed, integrating molecular fingerprinting via gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) with a multi-trophic battery of bioassays, including Aliivibrio fischeri, Heterocypris incongruens, and Sinapis alba L. The chemical characterization revealed highly heterogeneous profiles dominated by esters (up to 41%), alcohols

Quaternary biopesticides and disinfectants derived from quinine and amino acids - environmental prospects and risks.

The numerous risks associated with the toxicity of conventional quaternary ammonium salts (QASs) to various groups of living organisms have prompted the search for new, safer biologically active compounds synthesized in a sustainable manner from renewable raw materials. Here, we describe new QASs of natural origin containing quinine-based cation and anions derived from proteinogenic amino acids - l-asparagine and l-alanine. The quinine-derived QASs were thoroughly characterized in terms of correctness of chemical structure, physicochemical properties, and biological activity. It was discovered

The improvement of multi-contaminated sandy loam soil chemical and biological properties by the biochar, wood ash, and humic substances amendments.

Nowadays trace metal contamination of soils represents an important environmental hazard. Nevertheless, the use of some secondary waste products as amendments may restore the common soil functions. This paper focuses on the chemical and biological influence of wood biochar (BC), wood ash (WA) and humic substances (HS), alone and in the mixtures, on a heavily multi-contaminated sandy loam soil. The soil was amended by above-mentioned materials to follow a pH-increasing design (pHCa from 6.0 to 6.5, 7.0 and 7.5); soil samples were analyzed after 3, 30, and 60 days using a set of variables, namel

Xpand chest drain: assessing equivalence to current standard therapy--a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Penetrating chest trauma is a leading cause of admission to South African emergency departments. The resultant pneumo-/haemothoraces are currently routinely treated by means of standard underwater bottle drainage. A South African company, Sinapi Biomedical, recently launched the Xpand chest drain. This device incorporates a one-way valve with a fluid reservoir and permits the detection of an air leak, as well as intrapleural pressure differences. AIM: To prove equivalence of the Xpand chest drain compared with standard underwater bottle drainage. METHODS: In a non-blinded randomi

Brassicaceae-Based Biosolarization Reduces Lettuce Fusarium Wilt (FOLac) in Naturally Infested Soils.

Brassicaceae-based bio-disinfestation is a promising non-chemical option to manage lettuce Fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lactucae (FOLac), but evidence integrating pathogen suppression, residue chemistry, and soil microbiome response remains limited. We conducted a greenhouse mesocosm assay with naturally infested soil to compare biofumigation (uncovered soil) and biosolarization (plastic-covered soil for 40 days) using five Brassicaceae residues (Brassica carinata, B. juncea, B. napus, Sinapis alba and Raphanus sativus) applied at two field-equivalent doses. Plant-assisted degradation of phenanthrene as assessed by solid-phase microextraction (SPME).

The soil bacterium Sphingomonas yanoikuyae was isolated from a petroleum-contaminated soil and grown on mineral salts agar overlaid with the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon phenanthrene. The effect of white mustard, Sinapis alba, on phenanthrene degradation by S. yanoikuyae in artificially contaminated Redi-earth-sand was examined. Solid-phase-microextraction (SPME) gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID) was used to quantify the concentration of phenanthrene in the gas phase of Magenta jars containing S. alba and S. yanoikuyae, each alone and with no additions. System-Dependent Ecotoxicological Effects of Anatase and Rutile Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles Across Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Test Models.

The use of nanoscale materials has expanded rapidly in recent decades, with titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles among the most widely produced. Their increasing environmental release raises concerns about ecosystem-level effects. A key mechanism of toxicity is the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), although these effects strongly depend on particle properties, including crystalline form, size, morphology, surface characteristics, and exposure conditions. Here, we assessed and compared the ecological impacts of anatase and rutile TiO2 nanoparticles across prokaryotic and eukaryotic

Laboratory Evaluation of Contact and Feeding Deterrent Effects of Selected Essential Oils Against Different Life Stages of Cylas formicarius (Coleoptera: Brentidae).

The sweet potato weevil, Cylas formicarius (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Brentidae), is one of the most destructive pests of sweet potato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.] crops worldwide. Current management of the sweet potato weevil relies heavily on conventional pesticides, raising concerns about pesticide residues, environmental impacts, and the development of pesticide resistance. This study evaluated the effects of seven essential oils (EOs): eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus), garlic (Allium sativum), marigold (Calendula officinalis), mustard seed (Sinapis alba), peppermint (Mentha piperita), rosema

Herbivory and relative growth rates of Pieris rapae are correlated with host constitutive salicylic acid and flowering time.

Treatment of plants with exogenous salicylic acid (SA) improves resistance to many bacterial pathogens, but can suppress resistance to insect herbivores. While plants vary naturally in constitutive SA, whether such differences are predictive of resistance to insect herbivores has not been studied previously. We examined the possible role of this endogenous SA in structuring the interactions between the cabbage white butterfly, Pieris rapae, and ten hosts in the mustard family (Brassicaceae). Because P. rapae has multiple generations that utilize different hosts across the year, we included fiv

Ecotoxicity Study of Additives Composed of Zinc and Boron.

The high use of additives containing zinc borate and their limited solubility in water both lead to its persistence and accumulation in biological systems. On the other hand, soluble forms of boron are easily available to plant roots and are taken up by plants. There are no ecotoxicological data available for zinc borate, the industrial utilization of which is widespread. Therefore, the potential toxicity of zinc borate and its dissociated compounds was evaluated. Based on two different ecotoxicology tests, their effect on plant growth was studied. Firstly, the impact on Lemna minor growth was

Metabolic profiling and pharmacokinetic studies of sinapine thiocyanate by UHPLC-Q/TOF-MS and UHPLC-MS/MS.

Sinapine thiocyanate (ST) is an index component and pharmacological active component of Semen Sinapis and Semen Raphani, and it is widely used to relieving cough and asthma. This study aimed to obtain the metabolic and pharmacokinetic characterization of ST. The metabolic profiles of ST were obtained from rat plasma, urine, and feces via ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q/TOF-MS). Thirteen metabolites were structurally identified, and the proposed metabolic pathways of ST included deamination, demethylation, hydrogenation, dehydration,

An Observational Study of Honey Bee Colony Winter Losses and Their Association with Varroa destructor, Neonicotinoids and Other Risk Factors.

This article presents results of an analysis of honey bee losses over the winter of 2011-2012 in the Netherlands, from a sample of 86 colonies, located at 43 apiaries. The apiaries were selected using spatially stratified random sampling. Colony winter loss data were collected and related to various measures of colony strength recorded in summer, as well as data from laboratory analysis of sample material taken from two selected colonies in each of the 43 apiaries. The logistic regression model which best explained the risk of winter loss included, in order of statistical importance, the varia

Evidence that carotenoids are required for the accumulation of a functional photosystem II, but not photosystem I in the cotyledons of mustard seedlings.

If Norflurazon-treated mustard (Sinapis alba L.) seedlings are grown in low-fluence-rate white light, accumulation of carotenoids is completely inhibited, while levels of chlorophyll (Chl) a and b are comparable to those of control seedlings. Measurements of fluorescence yield and oxygen evolution indicate that carotenoid-free, green cotyledons are unable to perform leephotosynthesis in vivo. When thylakoid membranes were prepared and electron transport was measured in vitro, only PSI but not PSII activity was detected. Solubilization of the photosystems from thylakoid membranes and separation

Can aged microplastics be transport vectors for organic micropollutants? - Sorption and phytotoxicity tests.

Microplastics have been investigated over the last decade as potential transport vectors for other pollutants. However, the specific role of plastic aging, in which plastics change their characteristics over time when exposed to environmental agents, has been overlooked. Therefore, sorption experiments were herein conducted using virgin and aged (by ozone treatment or rooftop weathering) microplastic particles of LDPE - low-density polyethylene, PET - poly(ethylene terephthalate), or uPVC - unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride). The organic micropollutants (OMPs) selected as sorbates comprise a d
