Successful Management of Apically Exposed Implants in the Maxillary Sinus and Associated Sinus Pathologies Via Maxillary Sinus Floor Augmentation.

One common complication with dental implants placed in the atrophic posterior maxilla, especially with simultaneous transcrestal sinus augmentation, is the implant protruding into the sinus without apical bone support. Frequently, apically exposed implants contribute to various sinus pathologies that may lead to implant failure. Treatment options include (1) managing asymptomatic sinus pathology; (2) regrafting the apically exposed portion of the implant(s); and (3) removing the implant and placing a new implant with simultaneous grafting. The purpose of this case report is to present 4 clinic

Evaluation of a maxillary sinus floor augmentation in the presence of a large antral pseudocyst.

Sinus floor augmentation has been established as a predictable technique to overcome maxillary bone loss. Antral cystic lesions may lead to intrasurgical complications and should be accurately diagnosed. However, antral pseudocysts have recently been described not to be contraindicated for sinus-grafting procedures. The current article sought to report clinical, cone beam computed tomographic, and histologic results of a maxillary sinus floor augmentation, performed with piezoelectric surgery, in the presence of a large antral pseudocyst. Success of graft maturation was confirmed with histolog

Surgical Drainage and Simultaneous Sinus Floor Augmentation in Patients with Chronic Maxillary Sinusitis.

Chronic maxillary sinusitis accompanied by severe thickening of the sinus mucosa, blockage of the ostium, and patient-reported symptoms requires preoperative assessment and treatment by an otolaryngologist before maxillary sinus floor augmentation (MSFA). Prescription of antibiotics and nasal saline irrigation are the first choice of treatment; however, endoscopic sinus surgery is considered when the treatment's effect is limited and drug resistance is observed. Nevertheless, MSFA performed in the presence of sinus pathologies have been reported to have favorable results when the lesions are m

Devitalization of adjacent teeth following maxillary sinus floor augmentation: A retrospective radiographic study.

BACKGROUND: Elevation of the schneiderian membrane, during maxillary sinus floor augmentation (MSFA) may theoretically result in devitalization of adjacent teeth, which are in a close spatial relationship to the sinus floor. PURPOSE: To assess retrospectively the probability of devitalization of teeth adjacent to the osteotomy site after MSFA in a relatively large number of patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All MSFA procedures, performed at a university oral surgery clinic within a time period of 10 years, were assessed on the following eligibility criteria: (1) presence of vital teeth (ie, n

Anatomical preconditions for the palatal sinus floor augmentation—A three-dimensional feasibility study.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the anatomical feasibility of palatal sinus floor augmentation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 100 men and 100 women, both sinuses were analyzed using computed tomography. The patients were divided into four anatomical groups according to the remaining alveolar bone height: group 1 (0 ≤ × < 4), group 2 (4 ≤ × < 8), group 3 (8 ≤ × < 12), and group 4 (≥12). RESULTS: The 400 maxillary sinuses consisted of 23.5% (n = 94) group 1, 42.75% (n = 171) group 2, 23.5% (n = 98) group 3, and 9.25% (n = 37) group 4 sinuses. Optimal anatomical preconditions for pa

[Hydroxyapatite bone substitute (Ostim) in sinus floor elevation. Maxillary sinus floor augmentation: bone regeneration by means of a nanocrystalline in-phase hydroxyapatite (Ostim)].

The range of bone regeneration materials suitable for maxillar bone augmentation has increased steadily in the past few years and there is now a wide variety of materials being used. In the present case report, we analyzed the state of bone regeneration after sinus floor augmentation using a nanocrystalline in-phase synthetic anorganic hydroxyapatite bone grafting material (Ostim). A 60-year-old female patient underwent maxillary sinus floor elevation and the cavity was filled with Ostim three years before. Actually, she presented herself with loosening of the dental implant at position 17, as

The clinical and histologic efficacy of xenograft granules for maxillary sinus floor augmentation.

The objective of this study was to investigate the potential of xenograft (cancellous bovine bone) granules to form vital bone in non-natural bone-forming areas of maxillary sinuses. Fourteen sinus augmentations were performed in 14 patients. Surgical outcomes were uneventful, and sufficient radiopaque volume was present radiographically to place dental implants in all sites. Clinical reentry at 6 months revealed bone formation at the osteotomy site. Histologic evaluation of the obtained bone cores revealed that xenograft granules were integrated and surrounded by woven bone and lamellar bone

Evaluation of bone volume changes after sinus floor augmentation with autogenous bone grafts.

The aim of this study was to establish an objective method for quantitative evaluation of bone volume change after sinus augmentation. 11 sinuses in 9 patients were evaluated by computed tomography images taken before treatment (T0), and 3 months (T1) and at least 1 year (T2) after sinus augmentation. Based on the 3D digital subtraction technique, augmented bone images were extracted and bone volumes were calculated from voxel numbers of the extracted images. The mean augmented bone volumes at T1 and T2 were 2.46 cm3 and 1.85 cm3, respectively. These bone volume changes were statistically sign
