This manuscript presents a rare case of ruptured sinus of Valsalva aneurysm, which broke into the peri-membranous part of interventricular septum, forming a contained hematoma and protruded into the left ventricular outflow tract with fungal infective endocarditis. Echocardiography and computed tomography played a crucial role in the diagnosis of this complex case.

Valsalva's sinus aneurysm is a congenital heart disease that may occur both as isolated abnormality or combined with other ailments. The present paper summarizes the results of the use in 20 patients of non-invasive research methods, namely ultrasound cardiography and Doppler's cardiography, in the diagnosis of Valsalva's sinus aneurysms and concomitant heart diseases. Analysis of the findings has shown that the use of ultrasound cardiography in conjunction with pulse Doppler's cardiography permits demonstration with a high accuracy of the direct signs of Valsalva's sinus aneurysm without use

The ruptured aneurysm of the sinus of Valsalva is a rare congenital anomaly which we encountered in less then 1% of our surgical patients. We recently operated on a young girl suffering from this congenital malformation consisting of a 15 mm long fistula arising from the right coronary sinus and giving rise to a 6 cm aneurysm which dissected the interatrial septum as well as the posterolateral wall of the right atrium before rupturing into this cavity. Because of the unusual presentation of this malformation, which has never been described previously, we though worthwhile reporting this case i

Twenty-seven patients in whom a diagnosis of sinus of Valsalva aneurysm had been made during life were re-examined and the results have been evaluated. The clinical symptoms are not diagnostic. Routine radiological examination may also fail to show any significant findings. Large sinus of Valsalva aneurysms may show an atypical prominence of the right upper heart border, and in leutic aneurysms there may be fine calcification of the aortic wall. A definitive diagnosis can be made only by thoracic aortography. Five patients had a congenital saccular aneurysm connected with a sinus of Valsalva.

Sinus of Valsalva aneurysm (SVA) is a rare cardiac anomaly that can be congenital or acquired. We report 2 cases of SVA. The first case involves a 59-year-old male presenting with frequent syncope. Echocardiogram revealed a large right SVA obstructing the right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT). The second case involves a 21-year-old female presenting with sudden onset chest pain and a continuous machinery murmur. Echocardiogram revealed a ruptured right SVA into the right atrium. Although advanced percutaneous techniques have been implemented in the correction of this anomaly, open-heart surge

Percutaneous transcatheter closure of ruptured sinus of valsalva aneurysm was attempted in eight patients between January 1995 and March 2003 as an alternative strategy to surgery as this technique at present is an accepted therapeutic modality for various intracardiac defects. The age range was 14-35 years, all were male, seven in symptomatic class III and one in class IV on medical treatment. Two-dimensional and color Doppler echocardiography revealed rupture of an aneurysm of right coronary sinus into right ventricle in five and noncoronary sinus into right atrium in three and none had asso

Sinus of Valsalva aneurysms are uncommon. Aortic sinus aneurysm may be complicated by endocarditis or rupture. A 26 year old native Ghanaian presented with dyspnoea, raised jugular venous pressure (JVP), tender hepatomegaly, peripheral oedema, a thrill and a continuous murmur at the upper left sternal edge. Two-dimensional doppler echocardiography with colour flow mapping revealed a large aneurysm of the right sinus of Valsalva (4 cm diameter) that abutted the right ventricular out-flow tract with distortion of the pulmonary valve. Colour flow revealed left to right shunting of blood from the

A man in his 40s presented with haematemesis and melaena and was found to have a massive variceal bleed. Endoscopic procedures were ineffective at controlling the bleed; thus, an emergent transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) procedure was performed. There were no noted complications from the procedure and the patient was eventually discharged home. A month later, a murmur was auscultated on routine physical examination. This prompted an outpatient transthoracic echocardiogram which revealed a TIPS stent in the inferior vena cava (IVC) extending into the right atrium along with

A 22-year-old female with no medical history presented to the emergency room with 2 weeks of rapidly worsening dyspnea on exertion, orthopnea, and cough. On cardiac auscultation, she was noted to have to-and-fro murmurs and a continuous murmur with signs of right heart failure. Echocardiographic images obtained showed moderate to severe aortic regurgitation, severe tricuspid regurgitation, and a "windsock" originating in the right coronary sinus of Valsalva and terminating in the right atrium. The aortic valve had four leaflets, with the right leaflet function compromised by the ruptured sinus

This report describes the case of an 82-year-old man incidentally diagnosed with an unruptured saccular aneurysm of the left coronary sinus, a condition that occurs infrequently. Computed tomography and echocardiography revealed a 10-mm aneurysm. The aneurysm and the surrounding left sinus wall were resected and reconstructed using a polyester graft with a selective sinus replacement technique. This case supports the feasibility and safety of elective surgical treatment for an unruptured sinus of Valsalva aneurysm in high-risk anatomical locations, particularly using a selective sinus replacem

Sinus of Valsalva aneurysm (SVA) is relatively rare, especially in Western countries, and reports on long-term results after surgical SVA repair in a sizable patient cohort are scarce. In this issue of the Journal of Cardiac Surgery, Chaganti and colleagues publish their surgical experience over the past 30 years in 216 patients with SVA. SVAs were closed via a dual approach, with (1) patch closure (80%) or direct closure (20%) of the base of the fistula through aortotomy and (2) direct closure of the ruptured tip through the chamber of rupture. Aortic valve replacement (9.7%) or repair (6.5%)

A 21-year old woman with a history of Turner syndrome presented with a diastolic heart murmur, dizziness, dyspnea, and intermittent chest pain. Preoperative imaging revealed a fistula from the right sinus of Valsalva into the right atrium. Turner syndrome is associated with both aortopathy and congenital heart malformations. Acquired sinus of Valsalva fistula is a rare disorder, and this report describes its presence in association with Turner syndrome.

We present a case of a 24-year-old woman who was diagnosed with quadricuspid aortic valve with ruptured sinus of Valsalva. Quadricuspid aortic valve is a rare congenital cardiac anomaly. The recognition of quadricuspid aortic valve has clinical significance as it causes aortic valve dysfunction, and is often associated with other congenital cardiac abnormalities. We showed the important role of multimodality imaging in diagnosing a quadricuspid aortic valve associated with ruptured sinus of Valsalva.

OBJECTIVE: To review retrospectively the experience of surgical repair of sinus of valsalva aneurysm (SVA) in 70 patients.
METHODS: Between September, 1988 and October, 2003, Seventy patients with SVA underwent surgical repair by the aid of general anesthesia and cardiopulmonary bypass, comprised 1.4% (70/4960) of all open-heart operation. Forty-five were male and 25 female. Age ranged from 3 to 69 years old [mean (29 +/- 15) years]. The aneurysms ruptured into the right ventricle in 46 patients, right atrium in 23 and left ventricle in 1 respectively. The aneurysms originated from right and

Submitral aneurysm (SMA) is congenital outpouching of the left ventricular (LV) wall invariably occurring adjacent to the posterior leaflet of mitral valve. SMA is typically diagnosed in young adults who present with severe mitral regurgitation, heart failure, systemic embolism, and sudden cardiac death. African blacks account for the majority of the reported SMA cases. Our report of the very rare combination of SMA with aortic sinus aneurysm lends support to the congenital origin of this pathology occurring due to developmental deficiency in the fusion of myocardium and cardiac fibro skeleton
