High Prevalence of Rickettsia spp. in Dog Fleas (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) in Rural Uganda.

Fleas are known vectors of zoonotic agents. Thirty-five fleas, including 28 Ctenocephalides felis (Bouché), four Pulex irritans (L.), and three Echidnophaga gallinacea (Westwood) from 19 rural dogs from southwestern Uganda were analyzed for the presence of Rickettsia spp. (ompB, gltA, and 17 kDa fragment genes) and Bartonella spp. (rpoB and ITS genes) by PCR. Rickettsial DNA was detected in 27 out of 28 of Ct. felis and in two out of four P. irritans. None of the E. gallinacea specimens harbored Rickettsia DNA. Rickettsia felis was confirmed in 12 Ct. felis and in the two P. irritans specimens

Mitogenomic analysis of Palaeopsylla remota and Frontopsylla elata elata with implications for the phylogeny of Siphonaptera.

Fleas are among the most prevalent hematophagous ectoparasites found on mammals and have the ability to spread various pathogens. This study presents the first sequencing and analysis of the mitochondrial genomes of Palaeopsylla remota and Frontopsylla elata elata, alongside a comparative examination using mitochondrial genomic data from other flea species. Multiple aspects were investigated, including nucleotide composition, tRNA secondary structures, codon usage bias, nucleotide diversity, selective pressure, phylogenetic relationships, and divergence time estimation. Both species possess a

Detection of Rickettsia spp. and host and habitat associations of fleas (Siphonaptera) in eastern Taiwan.

Rickettsia typhi and Rickettsia felis (Rickettsiales: Rickettsiaceae) are two rickettsiae principally transmitted by fleas, but the detection of either pathogen has rarely been attempted in Taiwan. Of 2048 small mammals trapped in eastern Taiwan, Apodemus agrarius Pallas (24.5%) and Mus caroli Bonhote (24.4%) (both: Rodentia: Muridae) were the most abundant, and M. caroli hosted the highest proportion of fleas (63.9% of 330 fleas). Two flea species were identified: Stivalius aporus Jordan and Rothschild (Siphonaptera: Stivaliidae), and Acropsylla episema Rothschild (Siphonaptera: Leptopsyllida

[The plague in Vietnam: history and inventory of collected fleas (insecta, Siphonaptera) in the inhabited zones].

Ten flea species are reported in anthropic zones of Vietnam. Xenopsylla vexabilis is also here included because of it has been involved in others plague's countries. Lentistivalius klossi is the only selvatic flea known as parasite of synanthropic rats. L. klossi bispiniformis (Li and Wang, 1958), first describe from Chinese specimens, is here synonymized (syn. nov.) with the nominal subspecies.

Influence of photoperiod on egg production of cat fleas (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) infesting cats.

Photoperiod affected the production of cat flea eggs by cats infested with cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis (Bouché). Cat flea eggs have a smooth chorion and do not adhere to the host. About 60% of fluorescing eggs placed in the pelage were recovered in collecting trays underneath the host in 2 h. An average of 87.7 eggs per cat was laid during the last 8 h of the scotophase compared with 49.9 and 59.1 eggs during the other 8-h periods. Significant variation in the number of eggs collected daily existed among the six cats. The activity budgets were similar for all the cats with the maximum slee

Evolution of the Neopsylla hongyangensis Mitogenome: Insights Into the Mitogenomic Evolution of the Orders Siphonaptera and the Phthiraptera.

The evidence that parasitic animals exhibit elevated mitogenomic evolution rates is inconsistent and limited to Arthropoda. Neopsylla hongyangensis Li, Bai et Chen, 1986 (Siphonaptera: Ctenophthalmidae) feeds on the host's blood and is an important medical insect with plague transmission. In this study, we sequenced the N. hongyangensis mitogenome and explored the mitogenomic evolution of Siphonaptera and Phthiraptera, which both belong to the Insecta on warm-blooded animals. The mitogenomes of Siphonaptera are closed-circular double-stranded DNA molecules and exhibit highly conserved structur

Fleas (Insecta: Siphonaptera) with public health relevance in domestic pigs (Artiodactyla: Suidae) from Argentina.

The presence of fleas can have a great negative impact on the productivity and well-being of the animals, and can contribute towards propagation of causative pathogens of important diseases in animals and humans. Fleas and domestic pigs (Sus scrofa Linnaeus, 1758) are a known association. However, knowledge about fleas on pigs in Argentina is scarce. In this country, swine farming has become one of the main components of livestock production. This activity is primarily carried out by smallholder farmers, involving a potential risk to humans of acquiring pathogens. Our study was developed in Bu

[Epizootiological importance of Frontopsylla hetera (Siphonaptera) fleas in the Gorno-Altai natural plague focus].

Experiments conducted during all seasons have established that F. hetera, one of the mass species of fleas in Mountain Altai, can be infected both by the strain of selective virulence typical to this nidus and by the non-typical non-virulent mountain-altai strain of plague agent. The non-virulent strain does not form in fleas the block of proventriculus and within 1.5-2 months they become free from the microbe. At the infection with the typical strain of the altai subspecies rare transmissions of the agent to Pallas' pika can take place as well as its long preservation in fleas.

Fully illustrated morphological keys to the fleas (Siphonaptera) of Iran from superfamily to subspecies level.

Iran's strategic geographic position, its historical role in major trade routes such as the Silk Road, and its proximity to plague-endemic regions have repeatedly exposed it to plague outbreaks. The most recent documented epidemic occurred in 1966 in Sarab, East Azerbaijan Province. Historically, these outbreaks have significantly influenced demographic patterns, socioeconomic structures, and political developments. In response, extensive research has been conducted to investigate the diversity of Yersinia pestis-vectoring fleas (Siphonaptera) in Iran, resulting in the identification of 119 sp

Molecular detection of Rickettsia in ectoparasites (Siphonaptera and Phthiraptera) of domestic and feral pigs from Argentina.

Rickettsioses are distributed among a variety of hematophagous arthropods, and represent an emergent threat. The presence of rickettsial bacteria in ectoparasites collected from pigs from Argentina is still unknown. This study investigated the presence and identity of Rickettsia spp. in fleas, Pulex irritans, and sucking lice, Haematopinus suis, of domestic and feral pigs, Sus scrofa, from Central-Northern Argentina, through the genes gltA and ompB. Rickettsial bacteria were detected in 50% of fleas and 24% of lice. The BLASTn analysis of the ompB gene fragments in P. irritans samples showed i

Host distribution and pathogen infection of fleas (Siphonaptera) recovered from small mammals in Pennsylvania.

The number of recognized flea-borne pathogens has increased over the past decade. However, the true number of infections related to all flea-borne pathogens remains unknown. To better understand the enzootic cycle of flea-borne pathogens, fleas were sampled from small mammals trapped in central Pennsylvania. A total of 541 small mammals were trapped, with white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) and southern red-backed voles (Myodes gapperi) accounting for over 94% of the captures. Only P. leucopus were positive for examined blood-borne pathogens, with 47 (18.1%) and ten (4.8%) positive for Ana

Gymnomeropsylla n. gen. (Siphonaptera: Pygiopsyllidae) from Sulawesi, Indonesia, with the description of two new species.

Compared to related genera, this new flea genus is characterized by the absence, or presence of very few, bristles on the external surface of femur I and especially by the morphology of the apex of sternite IX in the male, which is hyaline and lacks spiniform bristles. The two new species, G. bunomydis and G. margaretamydis, are distinguished from each other by the structure of the genitalia, and the presence of numerous erect bristles on the thorax and abdominal tergites of the latter species. Both of these new species parasitize murine rodents that are endemic to Sulawesi; G. bunomydis was c
