β-sitosterol attenuates hepatic lipid accumulation and fibrosis via NLRP3 signaling in MASH mice.

Β-sitosterol (SIT), a natural phytosterol, has not been fully explored for its therapeutic potential in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). In this study, MASH was induced in mice via a high-fat, high-cholesterol (HFHC) diet, and lipid accumulation in HepG2 cells was triggered with oleic acid (OA), while the role of the NLRP3 inflammasome was explored in NLRP3-knockout (NLRP3-/-) mice treated with or without SIT. SIT treatment significantly alleviated HFHC-induced hepatic injury, evidenced by reduced alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase levels, improved

A plant food-based diet modifies the serum beta-sitosterol concentration in hyperandrogenic postmenopausal women.

Plant sterols or phytosterols are common components of plant foods, especially plant oils, seeds and nuts, cereals and legumes. The most common phytosterols are campesterol, beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol. Phytosterols have anticarcinogenic properties. Previous studies have suggested that populations with low breast cancer incidence often consume diets high in phytosterols. The present study evaluated whether consumption of a plant food-based diet, low in animal fat, may increase serum phytosterol levels in postmenopausal women. One hundred and four women volunteers were randomized to dietar

Bioactivity-Guided Isolation of β-Sitosterol From Terminalia glabrescens as a Potent Anti-Zika Virus Agent.

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection remains a global health concern due to its neurological complications and the lack of specific drugs or vaccines. This study investigated the anti-ZIKV potential of an ethanolic extract from Terminalia glabrescens leaves. Dereplication of the extract by UPLC-ESI-MS/MS identified 27 phenolic compounds, while GC-MS analysis of the dichloromethane (DCM) fraction revealed carboxylic acids, esters, an alcohol, a triterpene, and hydrocarbons. The extract (30 µg/mL) reduced viral load by 2.6 log in Vero CCL-81 cells and inhibited viral replication in SH-SY5Y cells (CC50 =

Tuning lipid digestibility and β-carotene bioaccessibility via β-sitosterol/γ-oryzanol ratios in oleogels.

Poor bioavailability of lipophilic nutrients remains a major challenge in oral delivery. This study investigated how β-sitosterol/γ-oryzanol (SiOr) ratios in canola oil-based oleogels modulate mechanical properties, lipid digestion, and β-carotene bioaccessibility. Among the tested formulations, Si4Or6 exhibited the highest hardness (11.90 ± 0.98 N) and the lowest extent of lipolysis (46.6 ± 4.2%), indicating enhanced resistance to lipolysis. While liquid canola oil underwent rapid hydrolysis, oil gelation significantly delayed lipolysis, although final free fatty acid release remained compara

Discovery of β-sitosterol's effects on molecular changes in rat diabetic wounds and its impact on angiogenesis and macrophages.

Diabetes care, particularly for diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs)-related complications, increases treatment costs substantially. Failure to provide timely and appropriate treatment for severe DFUs significantly increases amputation risk. Neovascularization and macrophage polarization play an important role in diabetic wound healing during different stages of the wound repair process. Therefore, a new treatment method that promotes neovascularization and macrophage polarization may accelerate diabetic wound healing. β-sitosterol possesses anti-inflammatory, lipid-lowering, and antidiabetic propertie
