The effects of colchicine on the ultrastructure of odontogenic cells in the common skate, Raja erinacae.

Ultrastructural alterations induced by colchicine were investigated to determine the secretory activities of odontogenic cells during formation of tooth enameloid matrix in skates. Treated skate inner dental epithelial (IDE) cells did not display dilated cisternae of the granular endoplasmic reticulum (GER) nor accumulate Golgi-associated secretory granules at any dose level or time interval examined. This response was markedly different from that observed in teleost IDE cells synthesizing the enameloid collagen matrix. Treated skate IDE cells did show increased accumulations of glycogen-conta

Polycystic ovarian disease in aquarium-managed cownose rays Rhinoptera bonasus.

Significant knowledge gaps remain in our understanding of the reproductive physiology and diseases of elasmobranchs. The objective of this work is to describe the clinical, imaging, and pathologic findings associated with polycystic ovaries in cownose rays housed in public aquariums. Ten adult female cownose rays Rhinoptera bonasus housed in 4 public aquariums presented with variable nonspecific (lethargy, anorexia, cutaneous discoloration) or no clinical signs. Clinical antemortem examination revealed a large, heterogeneously hyperechoic mass with many variably sized and shaped anechoic cavit

Ultrastructure of odontogenic cells during enameloid matrix synthesis in tooth buds from an elasmobranch, Raja erinacae.

The ultrastructure of the inner dental epithelial cells (IDE) and odontoblasts in elasmobranch (Raja erinacae) tooth buds was investigated by transmission electron microscopy to determine what contribution each cell type makes to the forming enameloid matrix. Row II, early stage, IDE cells contained few organelles associated with protein synthesis, whereas preodontoblasts appeared competent to initiate extracellular matrix production. Row III IDE cells are also devoid of organelles related to secretory protein synthesis, although these IDE cells accumulated large pools of intracellular glycoge

First Record of Morphological Abnormalities in an Embryo of the Longtail Stingray (Hypanus longus) From the Ecuadorian Pacific.

This short communication reports the first record of multiple morphological anomalies in an embryo of Hypanus longus from Ecuadorian waters. A gravid female H. longus contained two embryos in the uterus: one exhibiting normal morphology and the other presenting several severe anomalies, including an opening in the chondrocranial membrane, separation of the pectoral fins and an incomplete pelvic fin. In addition, a helical torsion of the caudal fin was observed, an anomaly not previously reported in batoids. The deformities observed would likely have severely impaired the embryo's growth and de

Macro- and microscopic morphology of the rectal gland of the Brazilian guitarfish (Pseudobatos horkelii) from Southeastern Brazil.

Sharks and rays present an osmoregulatory mechanism essentially exercised by a rectal salt gland. Histological assessments of this gland, however, are notoriously lacking. In this sense, histological assessments of the rectal gland of the Brazilian guitarfish, Pseudobatos horkelii obtained from off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were carried out herein. Rectal gland samples were histologically processed with hematoxylin/eosin and special Masson's Trichrome stain. Three main regions were identified: the capsule, secretory parenchyma and central duct. Highly vascularized connective tissue

Extending records of albinism and skin disorders in American cownose rays to southeastern Brazil.

Albinism is a genetic condition expressed as a lack of integumentary and retinal melanin. Although documented across many vertebrate species, albinism and other skin disorders are rarely observed in elasmobranchs (sharks and rays). The present study describes the first confirmed case of albinism in American cownose ray (Rhinoptera bonasus), and three other juveniles of the species with undetermined skin disorders observed in São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. Pigmentation disorders have already been observed in American cownose rays from the North Atlantic, including two cases of leucism and a po

A technical trick for extracting a stingray spine from hand: a case report.

Injuries from stingray fish are among the most common fish stings, and their frequency is increasing with the increase in global tourism. It most commonly causes injuries to the extremities and causes morbidity if not treated appropriately. Less commonly, life-threatening injuries can be observed due to injuries in the thorax and abdomen and damage to large vessels and vital organs. In addition to severe pain, tissue necrosis, and secondary infection after injury, systemic symptoms may occur. Since these injuries can occur in both fresh and salt water, it is possible to encounter such a case a

Surface immunoglobulins on the lymphocytes of the skate Raja naevus.

Living lymphocytes of the Elasmobranch fish, Raja naevus, have been examined for surface immunoglobulin (Ig) by treatment with a fluorescent anti-Ig system. Large numbers of Ig-positive cells (60-80%) were found in peripheral blood, spleen and thymus. Following modulation of the surface Ig with anti-Ig, resynthesis occurred, showing that the surface Ig is a product of the individual lymphocytes rather than material passively absorbed from the serum. Formation of caps was independent of temperature, occurring as readily at 4 degrees C as at 20 degrees C, a finding which presumably reflects the

Fgf signalling is required for gill slit formation in the skate, Leucoraja erinacea.

The gill slits of fishes develop from an iterative series of pharyngeal endodermal pouches that contact and fuse with surface ectoderm on either side of the embryonic head. We find in the skate (Leucoraja erinacea) that all gill slits form via a stereotypical sequence of epithelial interactions: 1) endodermal pouches approach overlying surface ectoderm, with 2) focal degradation of ectodermal basement membranes preceding endoderm-ectoderm contact; 3) endodermal pouches contact and intercalate with overlying surface ectoderm, and finally 4) perforation of a gill slit occurs by epithelial remode

Physiologic responses of Cownose Rays following freshwater dips for treatment of capsalid monogeneans.

OBJECTIVE: Two Cownose Rays Rhinoptera bonasus were presented for management of a severe capsalid monogenean infection Benedeniella posterocolpa in a mixed species habitat at an aquarium. METHODS: A series of freshwater (FW) dips were elected to mitigate parasite resistance to praziquantel due to the endemic monogenean population in the system. A pretreatment blood sample was opportunistically obtained, and subsequent samples were processed due to development of clinical signs. RESULT: While the first FW dip was tolerated well and did not induce abnormal behavior, the second led to one indiv

Andrology of shortnose guitarfish Zapteryx brevirostris (Müller & Henle, 1841) (Chondrichthyes, Trygonorrhinidae).

The andrological study of a species involves the macro- and microscopic analyses of the internal reproductive organs and the evaluation of seminal parameters and ultrastructural characteristics of the spermatozoa. As in other vertebrates, the male reproductive tract in chondrichthyans consists of testes and reproductive ducts (efferent duct, epididymis, Leydig's gland, ductus deferens and seminal vesicle). In this study the authors used three adult specimens of Zapteryx brevirostris from wild capture kept at the Ubatuba Aquarium, Brazil. Semen was collected by abdominal massage over the locati

Description of a new ascarid species in elasmobranchs from Taiwan Strait.

A new ascarid of elasmobranchs, Terranova amoyensis sp. n., is described from the intestine of the red stringray, Dasyatis akajei (Müller and Henle), from Taiwan Strait. This is the second report from this genus with a gubernaculum in fish. The new species differs from its congeners mainly in the following combination of characters: the 3 lips are unequal in size and different in shape, i.e., the subventral lips are asymmetric bilaterally and larger than the dorsal lip; the latter lip is bilaterally symmetrical. The ventriculus is spherical, and the cecum is short relative to the esophagus. Sp

Tongue-bite apparatus highlights functional innovation in a 310-million-year-old ray-finned fish.

Gill-skeleton modifications for processing prey represent a major source of functional innovation in living ray-finned fishes. Here we present the oldest actinopterygian tongue bite, derived from the gill skeleton, in the Middle Pennsylvanian (approx. 310 Ma) †Platysomus parvulus. Unrelated to extant tongue biters, this deep-bodied taxon possesses a large, multipartite basibranchial tooth plate opposing an upper tooth field centred on the vomer. This branchial structure occurs in conjunction with toothed jaws, indicating a role for both the basibranchial plate and jaws in feeding. †P. parvulus
