Cumulative skin irritation test of sanitary pads in sensitive skin and normal skin population.

OBJECTIVE: We performed a randomized, paired, double-blind trial involving 14 participants with self-declared normal skin and 15 participants with self-declared sensitive skin to test the cutaneous compatibility of materials of low irritation potential for skin irritation (sanitary pads) elicited by repetitive topical application. METHODS: Two test products patches and two control substance patches were applied to the lateral aspect of the upper arm once daily under fully occlusive conditions for 4 days. The positive control patch was moistened with sodium lauryl sulphate (0.1% w/v) and the n

Skin-restricted commensal colonization accelerates skin graft rejection.

Solid organ transplantation can treat end-stage organ failure, but the half-life of transplanted organs colonized with commensals is much shorter than that of sterile organs. Whether organ colonization plays a role in this shorter half-life is not known. We have previously shown that an intact whole-body microbiota can accelerate the kinetics of solid organ allograft rejection in untreated colonized mice when compared to germ-free (GF) or to antibiotic-pre-treated colonized mice, by enhancing the capacity of antigen presenting cells (APCs) to activate graft-reactive T cells. However, the contr

Common Skin Disorders in Pediatric Skin of Color.

Children with skin of color represent a large proportion of the pediatric population. There are numerous skin conditions that commonly occur in this population, including but not limited to acne, atopic dermatitis, pityriasis alba, tinea versicolor, progressive macular hypomelanosis, traction alopecia, and confluent and reticulated papillomatosis. This article highlights the clinical presentations of these conditions in skin of color and briefly addresses pathophysiology and treatment modalities.

Common Skin Conditions in Children: Neonatal Skin Lesions.

Skin findings during the initial month of life are ubiquitous. One study estimated that more than 95% of newborns have cutaneous findings, which often are distressing to parents but frequently are benign and self-limited. Among them are milia, cutis marmorata, congenital dermal melanocytosis, and the benign neonatal pustular eruptions (eg, benign cephalic pustulosis, erythema toxicum neonatorum, transient neonatal pustular melanosis). Clinicians need to recognize these benign skin conditions and differentiate them from more serious conditions, such as infectious pustular eruptions from bacteri

Tuning of skin immunity by skin commensal bacteria.

Evaluation of: Naik S, Bouladoux N, Wilhelm C et al. Compartmentalized control of skin immunity by resident commensals. Science 337, 1115-1119 (2012). Most analyses of commensal microbiota have been directed toward the gut microbiota and its role in the development of the intestinal immune system, and in regulating the immune response at sites distant from the gut, including the joints or CNS. However, very little is known about how other niches of commensal microbiota affect local immunity and whether they are influenced by the gut microbiota. The current paper reveals that skin commensals ar

Odontogenic skin sinus: a commonly overlooked skin presentation.

Facial skin lesions present routinely to clinic and are largely dermatological in origin. Odontogenic infections are an unusual cause of facial lesion and are well-described in the dental literature; however they are regularly overlooked and mismanaged, often to considerable aesthetic detriment. We present such a case and highlight important avoidable pitfalls.

Ceftaroline for complicated skin and skin-structure infections.

IMPORTANCE OF THE FIELD: A dramatic increase in infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has been observed, in part as a result of the epidemic of community-associated MRSA skin and skin-structure infections (SSSIs). Simultaneously, decreasing sensitivities of S. aureus to vancomycin have been reported and invasive infections caused by these strains have been associated with worse clinical outcomes. Clearly, new agents active against MRSA are needed. Ceftaroline is a new cephalosporin active against MRSA and many Gram-negative bacteria, though it is not active ag

Sensitive skin: correlation with skin surface microrelief appearance.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Sensitive skin is a condition associated with reduced tolerance to environmental factors and/or the application of topical products, such as cosmetics. Its pathophysiology has not been fully elucidated and few data are available on its prevalence. The aim of this study was to investigate possible correlation between objective sensitivity and skin surface microrelief. METHODS: During an epidemiological survey conducted for a campaign promoted by International Society of Plastic Dermatology in Italy, 243 adult healthy subjects of both sexes with no evident dermatological dis

Water, salts and skin barrier of normal skin.

BACKGROUND: We recently reported that open application of seawater for 20 min ameliorated experimental irritant contact dermatitis induced by sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) cumulative irritation. The efficacy was overall contributed by 500 mm of sodium chloride (NaCI) and 10 mm of potassium chloride (KCl), which are consistent with the each concentration in seawater. Although the usefulness of mineral water with 500 mm NaCl and 10 mm KCl to treat atopic dermatitis (AD) or irritated skin was considered, seawater or its components would induce a feel of stinging in patients with AD. Furthermore, 2

Skin type distribution and skin disease in Ireland.

The Irish are generally considered to have a fair complexion. We surveyed the distribution of skin type in an Irish city population (n = 1000). Skin type prevalence was as follows: type 1: 26%, type 2: 49.6%, type 3: 19.7%, type 4: 4.3%, type 5: 0.3%, type 6: 0.1%. Sunbeds were used by 16% of the population. Malignant melanoma occurred in 1.4% of patients, non-melanoma skin cancer in 6%. The high frequency of sunbed use in a fair skinned population and the high incidence of skin cancer is disturbing and highlights the need for ongoing public health education regarding ultraviolet radiation ris

Low skin temperatures produced by new skin refrigerants.

Temperatures produced by Cryosthesia -30 degrees C, Cryosthesia -60 degrees C, and Frigiderm were measured in minipigs. Cryosthesia -60 degrees C and Cryosthesia -30 degrees C were both found to rapidly lower skin temperatures to levels that have been shown to cause cell injury, necrosis, and loss of melanocytes. Use of these agents requires extreme caution in dermabrasion.

[Skin fragility in autoimmune blistering diseases of the skin].

In many disorders, skin and/or mucosal changes are dominated by blisters, wounds, or erosions. While these changes can be observed during infective, traumatic, metabolic, or inflammatory processes, these are normally clinical hallmarks of the disruption of the cytoarchitectural stability of the skin. Several proteins, such as those located in the dermal-epidermal junction zone and forming the hemidesmosomes, or those forming epidermal desmosomes are crucial for the maintenance of skin integrity. Defective function may be genetically determined due to impaired or absent production of specific p

Skin microbiome and skin disease: the example of rosacea.

The imbalance and/or the perturbation of the microbial populations that colonize the skin and that contribute to its defense may represent one of the causes of the development of noninfectious skin diseases. Atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, acne, and rosacea can be listed among these kinds of pathologies. In particular, considering that microbes have been long addressed as having a role in rosacea, this common dermatosis can be an interesting model to evaluate the correlation between microbiome alterations and the occurrence of clinical manifestations. Different microorganisms have been suggested

Spiritual and religious aspects of skin and skin disorders.

Skin and skin disorders have had spiritual aspects since ancient times. Skin, hair, and nails are visible to self and others, and touchable by self and others. The skin is a major sensory organ. Skin also expresses emotions detectable by others through pallor, coldness, "goose bumps", redness, warmth, or sweating. Spiritual and religious significances of skin are revealed through how much of the skin has been and continues to be covered with what types of coverings, scalp and beard hair cutting, shaving and styling, skin, nail, and hair coloring and decorating, tattooing, and intentional scarr

[Vitronectin in normal human skin and in skin lesions].

Vitronectin (S-protein of complement, serum spreading factor) is a multifunctional glycoprotein present in human plasma and in the elastic tissue of various organs. It belongs to the group of adhesion proteins and is of importance in the terminal stages of both the coagulation and complement system and in fibrinolysis. In human skin it is localized on dermal elastic fibers and on pathologically altered elastic material (solar elastosis, pseudoxanthoma elasticum) as well as on keratin filament material such as keratin bodies in lichen planus or amyloid deposits in localized cutaneous amyloid. Glycosaminoglycan content in skin of the tight-skin mouse.

The tight-skin (TSK) mouse has cutaneous changes similar to those found in the skin of patients with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS). Previous studies have shown that both have common abnormalities in skin thickness, dry weight, and hydroxyproline content. In this study, glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), major components of the ground substance, were quantitated in skins from TSK mice and compared with age-matched normal mice. Biochemical studies included determinations of hexosamines, uronic acids, and total GAGs by cetylpyridinium chloride precipitation. Dry weights and water-fat content of sk
