INTRODUCTION: Unlike other skin and soft tissue infections, necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a very rare but potentially fatal condition. Common organisms causing NF are poly-microbial (type I) infection with mixed organisms and mono-bacterial gram-positive infection with mainly streptococci (type II). Mono-bacterial gram-negative NF is a rare form of NF that is not included in the current classification.
CASE SERIES: We report four cases of mono-bacterial gram-negative NF caused by E. coli. All patients presented in septic shock and showed landscape-like skin necrosis and pain out of proportion

INTRODUCTION: The majority of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) have established primary skin manifestations or associated clinical feature. Skin NTDs often result in physical impairment and disfigurement, which can lead to disability. Skin diseases have been proposed as an entry point for integrated NTDs control. However, the magnitude and overlap of skin NTDs is poorly understood.
METHODOLOGY: An institution-based cross-sectional study was done using medical records of dermatology patients between July 2017 and June 2018 in a dermatology service in Northeast Ethiopia. A total of 661 patien

Skin is larger than any other organ in humans. Like other organs, various bacterial, viral, and inflammatory diseases, as well as cancer, affect the skin. Skin diseases like acne, atopic dermatitis, and psoriasis often reduce the quality of life seriously. Therefore, effective treatment of skin disorders is important despite them not being life-threatening. Conventional medicines for skin diseases include corticosteroids and antimicrobial drugs, which are effective in treating many inflammatory and infectious skin diseases; however, there are growing concerns about the side effects of these th

Systemic bacterial infections often produce skin signs which are of help in the elucidation and evaluation of these diseases. This paper reviews some of such cutaneous clues, their occurrence, recognition and value. The following conditions are discussed: bacterial endocarditis, pseudomonas septicaemia, disseminated gonococcal infection, meningococcemia, clostridia infections, leptospirosis and typhoid fever. Bacterial causes of erythema nodosum are also considered.

OBJECTIVE: The efficacy of Toto ointment and soap on common skin disorders was tested.
METHODOLOGY: A cohort of Nigerians with common skin conditions such as fungal and bacterial skin infections, scabies, acne vulgaris, and dandruff were selected and followed for a period of 12 weeks. The study is a randomized, comparative, prospective, blinded observational study. Following a placebo run in/wash out period, patients were given either a Toto ointment or soap, or a combination of these, or sulfur ointment alone. Soap use was preferred in patients with Tinea capitis more than patients with any

BACKGROUND: Skin disorders are generally considered to be more prevalent in the rural areas of Cameroon. This study was carried out to verify this assumption by describing the spectrum of skin disorders in a rural setting of Cameroon.
METHODS: We carried out a community-based clinical skin examination of 400 consenting subjects from 4 villages of Cameroon: Nyamanga (27%), Yebekolo (24%), Mbangassina (23%) and Bilomo (26%).
RESULTS: The overall prevalence of skin diseases in our sample was 62% {95% CI: 57.2%, 66.8%} (248/400). The commonest skin disorders were: fungal infections (25.4%), para

BACKGROUND: Neonates in low-income countries face a high burden of skin and subcutaneous diseases. We evaluated trends, inequalities, and future projections for these conditions from 1990 to 2035.
METHODS: Using data from the Global Burden of Disease 2023 study, we analyzed incidence rates and estimated annual percentage changes (EAPC) from 1990 to 2023 across 50 low-income countries. Inequalities were assessed using the slope and concentration indices, and frontier analysis was applied to identify high-burden outliers relative to the socio-demographic index (SDI). Trends were projected to th

The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2010 estimated the GBD attributable to 15 categories of skin disease from 1990 to 2010 for 187 countries. For each of the following diseases, we performed systematic literature reviews and analyzed resulting data: eczema, psoriasis, acne vulgaris, pruritus, alopecia areata, decubitus ulcer, urticaria, scabies, fungal skin diseases, impetigo, abscess, and other bacterial skin diseases, cellulitis, viral warts, molluscum contagiosum, and non-melanoma skin cancer. We used disability estimates to determine nonfatal burden. Three skin conditions, fungal skin

Acute bacterial skin and soft tissue infections represent a common clinical problem, and accurate diagnosis is crucial for initiating appropriate therapy. However, conditions such as cellulitis and erysipelas can be clinically mimicked by a variety of non-infectious conditions, including eczematous, venous, lymphatic, and autoimmune diseases. This review summarizes the key differences in clinical presentation, patient history, and laboratory findings that help distinguish true infections from their non-infectious mimickers. Special attention is given to conditions such as microbial eczema, her

INTRODUCTION: Skin diseases pose a significant health challenge globally, especially within prison settings where overcrowding and inadequate sanitation create a breeding ground for infections. Prisons, as part of society, exist in a dynamic equilibrium, serving as potential sources of infections that can spread beyond their confines. Despite facing similar challenges, there is a dearth of research focusing on skin diseases among inmates in Nepal. This study aims to assess patterns of skin diseases among prisoners.
METHODS: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study at the central prison, K

Internationally adopted children often present diseases contracted in the country of origin. Skin diseases are common in new arrivals, and diagnosis may prove challenging for GPs or even dermatologists if they are inexperienced in the extensive geographic and ethnic diversity of international adoptees. To analyse the frequency and characteristics of skin diseases in international adoptees. In total, 142 adoptees were evaluated for a cross-sectional cohort study. The most frequent diseases observed at arrival were dermatological conditions. Of the adoptees, 70% presented at least one skin disea

The composition of human skin acts as a natural habitat for various bacterial species that function in a commensal and symbiotic fashion. In a healthy individual, bacterial flora serves to protect the host. Under certain conditions such as minor trauma, impaired host immunity, or environmental factors, the risk of developing skin infections is increased. Although a large majority of bacterial associated skin infections are common, a portion can potentially manifest into clinically significant morbidity. For example, Gram-positive species that typically reside on the skin such as Staphylococcus

The skin microbiota plays an essential role in the protection against pathogens. It is our skin microbiota that makes us smell different from each other, rendering us more or less attractive to mosquitoes. Mosquitoes exploit skin bacterial odours to locate their hosts and are vectors of pathogens that can cause severe diseases such as malaria and dengue fever. A novel solution for long-lasting protection against insect vectors of disease could be attained by manipulating the bacterial commensals on human skin. The current options for protection against biting insects usually require topical ap

Rosacea and chronic urticaria are two common skin disorders existing in idiopathic forms. A role of Helicobacter pylori bacterium infection in the aetiopathogenesis of rosacea or chronic urticaria has been suggested although still controversial. The aim of the present study was to establish a relationship between H. pylori infection and rosacea chronic urticaria by means of an immunoproteomic investigation. We analyzed immunoglobulin A (IgA)-, IgG-, and IgE-mediated immune-responses against H. pylori antigens and we identified some bacterial immunoresponsive proteins. A general IgA- and IgE-me

Even a half of diabetic patients are suffering from skin troubles. Hyperglykemia causes skin changes leading to higher incidence of bacterial and mycotic infections, provokes skin degenerative processes, macro- and microangiopathy and neuropathy. Diabetic dermopathy, rubeosis, bullousis and scleredema are based on these changes. Other skin diseases including necrobiosis lipoidica, granuloma anulare, vitiligo, perforating folliculitis accompany diabetes frequently but their etiopathogenesis is not clear.
