Skin microbiome alterations in upper extremity secondary lymphedema.

Lymphedema is a chronic condition that commonly occur from lymphatic injury following surgical resection of solid malignancies. While many studies have centered on the molecular and immune pathways that perpetuate lymphatic dysfunction, the role of the skin microbiome in lymphedema development remains unclear. In this study, skin swabs collected from normal and lymphedema forearms of 30 patients with unilateral upper extremity lymphedema were analyzed by 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing. Statistical models for microbiome data were utilized to correlate clinical variables with microbial profiles. O

The Skin Microbiome: Current Landscape and Future Opportunities.

Our skin is the largest organ of the body, serving as an important barrier against the harsh extrinsic environment. Alongside preventing desiccation, chemical damage and hypothermia, this barrier protects the body from invading pathogens through a sophisticated innate immune response and co-adapted consortium of commensal microorganisms, collectively termed the microbiota. These microorganisms inhabit distinct biogeographical regions dictated by skin physiology. Thus, it follows that perturbations to normal skin homeostasis, as occurs with ageing, diabetes and skin disease, can cause microbial

Acne, Microbiome, and Probiotics: The Gut-Skin Axis.

The objective of this narrative review was to check the influence of the human microbiota in the pathogenesis of acne and how the treatment with probiotics as adjuvant or alternative therapy affects the evolution of acne vulgaris. Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin disease involving the pilosebaceous units. The pathogenesis of acne is complex and multifactorial involving genetic, metabolic, and hormonal factors in which both skin and gut microbiota are implicated. Numerous studies have shown the bidirectionality between the intestinal microbiota and skin homeostasis, a communication mainly es

Skin microbiome considerations for long haul space flights.

Dysbiosis of the human skin microbiome has long been associated with changes to the pH of the skin, dermal immune function and chronic skin conditions. Dermatological issues have been noted as the most prevalent medical presentation in the microgravity environment of space. The change in gravitational forces has been implicated in human immuno-suppression, also impacted by changes in the gastrointestinal-skin axis and its impact on Vitamin D metabolism, altered microbial gene expression in resident flora (leading changes in biofilm formation) and increased virulence factors in potential pathog

The Human Skin Microbiome in Selected Cutaneous Diseases.

The human skin harbors a wide variety of microbes that, together with their genetic information and host interactions, form the human skin microbiome. The role of the human microbiome in the development of various diseases has lately gained interest. According to several studies, changes in the cutaneous microbiota are involved in the pathophysiology of several dermatoses. A better delineation of the human microbiome and its interactions with the innate and adaptive immune systems could lead to a better understanding of these diseases, as well as the opportunity to achieve new therapeutic moda

Altered Skin and Gut Microbiome in Hidradenitis Suppurativa.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by the formation of nodules, abscesses, and fistulae at intertriginous sites. The skin-gut axis is an area of emerging research in inflammatory skin disease and is a potential contributory factor to the pathogenesis of HS. A total of 59 patients with HS provided fecal samples and nasal and skin swabs of affected sites for analysis. A total of 30 healthy controls provided fecal samples, and 20 healthy controls provided nasal and skin swabs. We performed bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA gene amplicon sequencing on tota

Investigation of the skin microbiome: swabs vs. biopsies.

BACKGROUND: Human skin is populated by diverse bacteria and there is increasing evidence that resident bacteria play a key role initiating immune responses in cutaneous diseases such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and hidradenitis suppurativa. Bacteria are present at all layers of the skin but many studies have relied on swabs to profile the skin microbiota. OBJECTIVES: As the pathogenesis of many skin conditions is dermal, we wanted to compare the microbiota obtained in swabs (surface) and biopsies (dermis). METHODS: Using 16S rRNA gene sequencing we established the microbial profiles of s

The skin microbiome: the overlooked axis in modern dermatology.

The skin microbiome plays a critical role in maintaining cutaneous barrier integrity, modulating immune responses, and influencing the expression of dermatologic disease, yet its integration into clinical practice remains limited. Microbial alterations have been described in conditions such as atopic dermatitis, acne vulgaris, psoriasis, and chronic wounds; however, uncertainty regarding causality, interindividual variability, and lack of methodological standardization have hindered clinical translation. Current diagnostic frameworks rarely incorporate microbial metrics, while antimicrobial th

The cutaneous microbiome in skin cancer - A systematic review.

The overall incidence of skin cancer has risen over the past half a decade worldwide and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Recent advances in molecular testing have allowed us to better characterize microbiome alterations in skin cancer. However, literature specific to skin microbiome and skin cancer remain heterogenous and scattered. A systematic review was performed to identify the existing literature and its usefulness in providing microbiome-based biomarkers. A search of the databases (PubMed, Medline, EMBASE, GoogleScholar) was conducted from June to July 2022 in acc

The Skin Microbiome: A New Actor in Inflammatory Acne.

Our understanding of the role of Cutibacterium acnes in the pathophysiology of acne has recently undergone a paradigm shift: rather than C. acnes hyperproliferation, it is the loss of balance between the different C. acnes phylotypes, together with a dysbiosis of the skin microbiome, which results in acne development. The loss of diversity of C. acnes phylotypes acts as a trigger for innate immune system activation, leading to cutaneous inflammation. A predominance of C. acnes phylotype IA1 has been observed, with a more virulent profile in acne than in normal skin. Other bacteria, mainly Stap

Alterations of the skin microbiome in HIV infection with pruritus.

INTRODUCTION: Pruritus is one of the main common symptoms of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Skin changes caused by scratching, or the absence of skin findings despite ongoing pruritus, impact patients' quality of life. With cutaneous HIV infection, pruritus is continuous, though it is unknown whether HIV infection affects the skin microbiota to cause pruritus. METHODS: The skin microbiomes and plasma of HIV infection with pruritus, HIV and healthy were investigated in this study. Swabs were taken from four body sites and the composition of the microbiome at those sites was asse

Sex differences in the skin microbiome of burn scars.

Sex differences are observed in various spectrums of skin diseases, and there are differences in wound healing rate. Herein, sex differences were identified for the newly healed skin microbiome of burn patients. Fifty-two skin samples (26 normal skin, 26 burn scars) were collected from 26 burn patients (12 male, 14 female) and microbiota analysis was performed. The correlation between skin microbiota and biomechanical properties of burn scars was also investigated. There were no significant differences in clinical characteristics between male and female patients. Considering the biomechanical

Role of the skin microbiota and intestinal microbiome in rosacea.

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory cutaneous disorder of uncertain etiology that mainly affects the centrofacial region, including cheeks, nose, chin, forehead, and eyes. The pathogenesis of rosacea remains unclear because it involves several complex factors. Additionally, the potential treatment methods need to be explored. We reviewed the common bacterial species in the skin microbiota and gut microbiota of rosacea patients such as Demodex folliculorum, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Bacillus oleronius, Cutibacterium acnes, and Helicobacter pylori and identified their role in the pathogenesis. Evolving approaches to profiling the microbiome in skin disease.

Despite its harsh and dry environment, human skin is home to diverse microbes, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and microscopic mites. These microbes form communities that may exist at the skin surface, deeper skin layers, and within microhabitats such as the hair follicle and sweat glands, allowing complex interactions with the host immune system. Imbalances in the skin microbiome, known as dysbiosis, have been linked to various inflammatory skin disorders, including atopic dermatitis, acne, and psoriasis. The roles of abundant commensal bacteria belonging to Staphylococcus and Cutibacteri

The Skin Microbiome and Its Role in Psoriasis: A Review.

The skin microbiome is made of various microorganisms, most of which have the function of protecting individuals from harmful pathogens, and they are involved in innate and adaptive immune responses. The skin acts as a physical and immunological barrier against external stimuli, including pathogens and physical damage. Changes in the composition of the skin microbiome can trigger inflammatory processes leading to inflammatory skin diseases in susceptible individuals. Psoriasis (PsO) is a chronic inflammatory disease with a multifactorial etiology, where breakdown of immune tolerance to cutaneo

The canine and feline skin microbiome in health and disease.

The skin harbours a diverse and abundant, yet inadequately investigated, microbial population. The population is believed to play an important role in both the pathophysiology and the prevention of disease, through a variety of poorly explored mechanisms. Early studies of the skin microbiota in dogs and cats reported a minimally diverse microbial composition of low overall abundance, most probably as a reflection of the limitations of testing methodology. Despite these limitations, it was clear that the bacterial population of the skin plays an important role in disease and in changes in respo
