Effects of water temperature on surfactant-induced skin irritation.

Surfactant-induced irritant reactions may be elicited by several endogenous and exogenous factors. Among these, surfactant concentration, and duration and frequency of exposure play important rôles. The study focuses on the influence of water temperature in determining damage of the skin barrier. 10 subjects of both sexes entered the study. 4 areas (4 x 4 cm2) were randomly selected on the volar forearm and were treated with a daily open application of 5% sodium lauryl sulphate for 4 days. The solutions were at 3 temperatures: 4 degrees, 20 degrees and 40 degrees C. One site served as untreate

Specific responses of rat raphé neurones to skin temperature.

1. The responses of single neurones in the nuclei raphés magnus, medianus, dorsalis and pontis to changes in skin temperature were recorded in rats anaesthetized with urethane. Skin temperature was altered by means of a water-perfused jacket. 2. Of 210 neurones studied, thirty-five were specifically excited by warming the skin whilst twenty were cold responsive. The greatest proportion of cells responding to skin temperature were in the nucleus raphé magnus, whilst few neurones in the raphé dorsalis and pontis were influenced. 3. The warm units had peak activity at a mean skin temperature of 3

Skin temperature side differences--a diagnostic tool for CRPS?

Complex regional pain syndrome type I (CRPS I) is a chronic painful disease of one extremity that may develop as a disproportionate consequence of a trauma affecting the limbs without overt nerve injury. It is clinically characterized by sensory, motor and autonomic symptoms including vascular abnormalities. Previously, we have reported that pathophysiological alterations of the ongoing sympathetic activity play a crucial role in vasomotor disturbances (Brain 124 (2001) 587). As a companion article, the aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of skin temperature side differences

Skin surface temperature: a possible new outcome measure for skin and soft tissue infection.

BACKGROUND: This study describes the novel use of skin surface temperature to measure the severity and the response to treatment of skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI). METHODS: Patients admitted with SSTI for intravenous antibiotic therapy. Skin temperature was measured daily at the point of maximum heat on the SSTI affected limb and the non-affected limb using a non-contact laser thermometer. FINDINGS: Sixty-three patients were included. Mean length of stay was 4.95 days. The difference between affected and unaffected limb was 3.5° C (95% CI 3.0-3.9) at day one and 2.1° C (95% CI 1.7-2.6

Skin Temperatures of Back or Neck Are Better Than Abdomen for Indication of Average Proximal Skin Temperature During Sleep of School-Aged Children.

PURPOSE: The tight association between sleep, body temperature regulation, and patterns of skin temperature change highlights the necessity for accurate and valid assessment of skin temperatures during sleep. With increased interest in this functional relationship in infants and children, it is important to identify where to best measure proximal skin temperature and whether it is possible to reduce the number of sites of measures, in order to limit the experimental effects in natural settings. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the most suitable single skin temperature sites for rep

Limb Skin Temperature as a Tool to Predict Orthostatic Instability.

Orthostatic instability is one of the main consequences of weightlessness or gravity challenge and plays as well a crucial role in public health, being one of the most frequent disease of aging. Therefore, the assessment of effective countermeasures, or even the possibility to predict, and thus prevent orthostatic instability is of great importance. Heat stress affects orthostatic stability and may lead to impaired consciousness and decrease in cerebral perfusion, specifically during the exposure to G-forces. Conversely, peripheral cooling can prevent orthostatic intolerance - even in normothe

Considerations for the measurement of core, skin and mean body temperatures.

Despite previous reviews and commentaries, significant misconceptions remain concerning deep-body (core) and skin temperature measurement in humans. Therefore, the authors have assembled the pertinent Laws of Thermodynamics and other first principles that govern physical and physiological heat exchanges. The resulting review is aimed at providing theoretical and empirical justifications for collecting and interpreting these data. The primary emphasis is upon deep-body temperatures, with discussions of intramuscular, subcutaneous, transcutaneous and skin temperatures included. These are all tur

Does activity affect residual limb skin temperatures?

BACKGROUND: Many lower limb amputees experience thermal discomfort as a result of wearing a prosthesis. The development of new prosthetic technology to address thermal discomfort requires an understanding of how activity (or inactivity) affects residual limb skin temperatures and how skin temperatures are mapped across the skin-prosthesis interface. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We studied skin temperatures inside the socket and suspension system of unilateral transtibial amputees to determine the following: (1) Does residual limb skin temperature change as a function of activity and its cessation? (2)

The superficial skin temperature of low extremities in patients with sciatica.

In some patients with lumbar disc herniation pain of various character and intensity is observed. Besides the pain a number of patients present burning or cold sensations. The superficial temperature of the lower extremities was evaluated in 39 patients with ischialgia, classified for surgical treatment. The differences of skin temperature, however not statistically significant, between the affected and non-affected limbs were found.

Effect of temperature on mutation in cultured human skin fibroblasts.

Because clothing enhances the gonadal temperature in the human male and because as a consequence of that the spontaneous mutation rate might be increased, a study was undertaken to determine the effect of temperature on mutation towards HPRT deficiency in human diploid skin fibroblasts. Culturing of the cells in HAT medium containing azaserine, to remove pre-existing mutants, was highly mutagenic. Some results suggested that azaserine acts as an indirect mutagen. The mutational process in the presence of azaserine was influenced by temperature, a rise in temperature from 33 to 37 degrees C lea

Toe skin temperature as a guide to epidural anaesthesia dosing.

To determine the time for additional epidural anaesthesia, skin temperature of the big toe was evaluated in 50 patients undergoing mastectomy. Epidural catheters were placed at or near the T5-6 intervertebral space and 12 ml, lidocaine 1.5% with 1:200,000 epinephrine were injected. When the skin temperature, which had increased following epidural anaesthesia, decreased by 0.3 degrees C without an increase of systolic arterial blood pressure (ABP) of more than 20%, 8 ml lidocaine 1.5% were injected. If the skin temperature increased, the monitor was judged to have been useful. When ABP increase

A reduced core to skin temperature gradient, not a critical core temperature, affects aerobic capacity in the heat.

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the core to skin temperature gradient during incremental running to volitional fatigue across varying environmental conditions. A secondary aim was to determine if a "critical" core temperature would dictate volitional fatigue during running in the heat. 60 participants (n=49 male, n=11 female; 24±5 yrs, 177±11 cm, 75±13 kg) completed the study. Participants were uniformly stratified into a specific exercise temperature group (18 °C, 26 °C, 34 °C, or 42 °C) based on a 3-mile run performance. Participants were equipped with core and chest
