OBJECTIVE: To assess outcomes in surgically managed patients with depressed skull fractures and associated moderate to severe head injury.
METHODS: The study was conducted in the Department of Neurosurgery Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Karachi, from January 2016 to December 2017. We analyzed 90 patients with depressed skull fracture managed surgically from January 2015 to December 2016. The patients selected for this study belonged to all age groups with clinically palpable depressed skull fracture confirmed by CT brain with bone window. Outcome was assessed by Glasgow outcome score.

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND AND CASE REPORT: Many surgical procedures require a rigid immobilization of the patients' head, which is usually achieved by using a pin-type head holder. We briefly illustrate the case of a 4-year-old girl who sustained a depressed skull fracture by penetration of a pin of the head holder. The fracture was noted at the end of the surgery performed for treatment of a cerebellar astrocytoma and was managed conservatively.
DISCUSSION: Several factors seem to be involved in the production of this complication as are faulty application of the pins, excessive pin pressure, s

Data are given of a consecutive series of 225 cases with depressed skull fracture, admitted within 48 hours after the accident. The series is considered to represent the full range of this type of injury in a densely populated area in the Netherlands. The predominance of young male patients with a compound fracture is stressed. The data are compared with other series. The results of long-term follow-up are presented and particular attention is paid to the rate of early and late epilepsy and persisting neurological deficit. The significance of complications like intracranial haematoma and venou

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate pediatric patients who were operated with the diagnosis of depressed skull fracture.
METHODS: The records of pediatric patients who presented with traumatic head injury to multicenter neurosurgery clinics between 2002 and 2018 and who were operated with a diagnosis of depressed skull fracture were retrospectively reviewed. All of the patients underwent primary bone fragment replacement operation, and the patients' own bone flaps were used to repair depressed skull fractures in all of them.
RESULTS: A total of 78 patients were included in the study. Of the study group,

Intrauterine depressed skull fractures are reported only occasionally. In reviewing the literature it seems clear that pressure of the fetal head against the maternal bony structures, mainly the sacral promontory, accounts for most of the so-called "spontaneous" congenital depressed skull fractures. Rather than true fractures, they are focal congenital moulding depressions. On the other hand, trauma to the mother's abdomen and traumatic delivery are accepted pathological mechanisms for such lesions; most commonly they are ascribed to inexpert application of the forceps blades or undue force by

Depressed skull fractures without a clear explanation as to their origin point to trauma with a blunt object and suspected child abuse. In the case of newborn infants, their young age is a vulnerability factor and requires an exhaustive assessment. When child abuse is suspected, an assessment of the differential diagnoses is required to make the most appropriate intervention possible. Both an excessive intervention and an omission of a necessary intervention should be avoided. Congenital depressed skull fractures, described as "ping-pong fractures", are rare (0.3 to 2/10 000 births). They may

INTRODUCTION: Trauma is a huge problem seen in developed countries as well as developing countries. Head injury is a major factor responsible for mortality in young populations. Up to 6% of all head injuries and 11% of severe head traumas might result in a depressed skull fracture (DSF), a catastrophic injury. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of dural tear and to identify its predictors.
METHOD: A retrospective review of medical records of all patients operated on for DSFs at the University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital from 1 January 2021 to 1 January 2023 G.C. (Gre

Linear skull fractures are relatively common in children, however, it is rarer to see depressed fractures. This report details the case of a 7-year-old boy who was admitted to the emergency department with complete blindness after having experienced an in-car traffic accident. Brain tomography of the patient showed that a large, island-shaped piece of occipital bone was depressed on the visual cortex and superior sagittal sinus in the midline. Presentation of complete loss of vision after an isolated head trauma is very rare, and there are no similar cases in existing literature. The limits of

Spontaneously resolving depressed skull fractures have been previously reported in the pediatric age group, however they are very rare in adolescents. We report a case of spontaneously elevating depressed fracture in a 13 year old boy. Depressed skull fractures in this age group might resolve on its own but may also complicate during its course of non-operative self elevation. In the reported case, the child developed gliosis and suffered seizures two years after the trauma. Repeat scans showed almost normal skull topography with underlying gliotic changes. Although all depressed skull fractur

Depressed skull fractures (ping-pong) in the fetus and newborn are associated with birth canal pathology, maternal trauma and birth trauma following instrumental delivery. The authors report a newborn with a depressed skull fracture (ping-pong) who underwent minimally invasive neurosurgical lifting of bone fragment through a burr hole. Strategy and methods of treatment of similar depressed skull fractures were comprehensively discussed. Moreover, the authors proposed a brief algorithm for the use of vacuum systems and various surgical techniques, including follow-up depending on type, cause, s

BACKGROUND: The presence of skull fracture in patients sustaining traumatic brain injury is an important risk factor for intracranial lesions. Assessment of integrity of dura in depressed skull fracture is of paramount importance because if dura is torn, lacerated brain matter may be present in the wound which needs proper debridement followed by water tight dural closure to prevent meningitis, cerebral abscess, and pseudomeningocoele formation. The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of dural tear in patients with depressed skull fractures.
METHODS: This cross-sectional st

Classical treatment of compound depressed skull fractures includes debridement and closure of all scalp wounds to minimize the risk of delayed intracranial infection. In selected situations, a nonsurgical approach may prove to be equally safe. Over a 33-month period, we evaluated 1075 patients for head trauma. There were 63 patients with non-missile, compound depressed skull fractures (9 of these 63 patients have been excluded for deaths that occurred within 4 days of admission). Patients with significant intracranial hematomas or dural violations over the convexity of the brain underwent form

BACKGROUND: A skull fracture widely occurs in patients with traumatic brain injury, leading to intracranial hematoma, brain contusion, and intracranial infection. It also influences the prognosis and death of patients. This study aimed to discuss cases of patients with comminuted skull fractures.
METHODS: From October 2015 to December 2018, 38 patients with comminuted skull fractures were admitted to the hospital. All patients underwent three-dimensional reconstruction of computed tomography scan images. Digital subtraction angiography or magnetic resonance venography was performed to find ou

Surgery for depressed skull fractures has developed over centuries to attain the consensus approaches currently used. This review outlines the last 200 years of development of surgical approaches to closed and open depressed skull fractures, fractures involving dural venous sinuses and ping-pong fractures involving infants. Early reports often dealt with only closed and open depressed skull fractures. However, experience has shown that each fracture category merits its own management strategies. Accepted approaches are based on observation only; there is little to no scientific evidence to sup

An infant sustained a significant depressed skull fracture from a fall. Before the planned surgical repair of the fracture could be carried out, the child sustained a second fall that led to the complete resolution of the depressed fracture. Mechanisms to explain this unusual phenomenon are discussed.

Traumatic dural venous sinus injury is uncommon but potentially fatal because of massive hemorrhage at presentation or during surgery, and intracranial hypertension caused by impaired venous outflow. We report a case of a young woman with an open depressed skull fracture over the vertex caused by repeated blunt assault. Computed tomography revealed a large midline depressed fracture with bony fragments penetrating the superior sagittal sinus. On arrival, the patient was in hemorrhagic shock, with a semicoma status and right hemiparesis. Emergency surgery was performed for hemostasis and wound

Compound depressed skull fractures occur commonly from assault with various sharp and blunt objects. The use of a stiletto heeled shoe as an offensive weapon has not been reported before as a cause of such an injury. However unusual the history of assault, a clear picture of the mechanism of the injury is vital. Patients with scalp lacerations following a direct blow to the head must be evaluated thoroughly. Early investigation and treatment are necessary to reduce the risk of complications, as illustrated by this case.

Depressed skull fractures of the superior sagittal sinus (SSS) deserve special attention because they may lead to sinus obstruction or stenosis, resulting in venous hypertension. Here, we highlight an extremely unusual clinical presentation of a depressed skull fracture over the SSS obstructing the sinus, along with successful surgical management. A 35-year-old male patient presented with quadriplegia and intact sensations throughout the body following an alleged history of a rock falling on his head. On examination, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed a de
