Tick-borne encephalitis virus foci in Slovakia.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus as a typical arbovirus relies on two types of hosts for its survival: ticks act both as virus vectors and reservoir hosts, and vertebrates amplify the virus infection by acting as a source of infection for feeding ticks. Longitudinal monitoring of TBE virus in ticks and vertebrate hosts including humans over a period of 40 years resulted in the identification of the areas of Slovakia where TBE virus is endemic. These are concentrated to the western, southern, and eastern parts of the country. Even with recently identified foci there is no evidence that the s

[Brill's Disease in Eastern Slovakia (author's transl)].

A report is presented on the epidemiological, clinical and serological findings obtained in 37 patients in the southern part of Eastern Slovakia who were diagnosed as having Brill's disease. All patients presented with a recurrence of classical louse-borne typhus; in no case did the disease occur for the first time. It is recommended that all patients with a febrile illness of uncertain aetiology be subjected to a routine serological examination for louse-borne typhus in epidemic areas. Careful supervision is necessary since if such late recurrences are not detected they can result in a renewe

Climate warming and tick-borne encephalitis, Slovakia.

Increased tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) cases have been reported in central Europe. To investigate temporal trends in the altitude at which TBE cases occur in Slovakia, we analyzed the number of TBE cases during 1961-2004. Since 1980, TBE cases moved from lowlands to submountainous areas, most likely because of rising temperature.

Is Slovakia Almost a Hepatitis D Free Country?

BACKGROUND: It is assumed that the prevalence of hepatitis D in HBsAg-positive individuals reaches 4.5-13% in the world and on average about 3% in Europe. Data from several European countries, including Slovakia, are missing or are from an older period. METHODS: We analyzed all available data on hepatitis D from Slovakia, including reports from the Slovak Public Health Authority and the results of one prospective study, and three smaller surveys. The determination of anti-HDV IgG and IgM antibodies and/or HDV RNA was used to detect hepatitis D. RESULTS: In the years 2005-2022, no confirmed c

Mumps and its occurrence in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Mumps is an infectious viral disease transmitted by droplets. It is vaccine preventable and thanks to the start of compulsory vaccination in 1987, there has been a significant reduction in cases. Nevertheless, over the years, occasional local outbreaks have occurred in the Czech Republic, especially in adolescents, while in Slovakia, since the beginning of vaccination, the situation has been kept under somewhat better control. This may be explained by the differences in the vaccination schedules between the countries and the consequent secondary vaccine failure, the so-called waning of immunit

Nineteen years study of beta-thalassaemia in Slovakia.

BACKGROUND: Beta-thalassaemia is a congenital disorder caused by point mutations in a haemoglobin beta-globin chain. The heterozygous form produces microcytosis and normal iron levels, however, haemoglobin electrophoresis shows elevated amounts of haemoglobin A2 and eventually foetal haemoglobin F as well. METHODS: Between 2005-2011, in three centres in Slovakia, carriers of beta-thalassaemic genes or other haemoglobinopathies were searched for. Diagnosis was performed by haematologists whereby the family history was evaluated, together with the overall clinical condition, blood count and blo

Climate changes implicated for Dirofilaria dissemination in Slovakia.

Dirofilariosis is a parasitic disease caused by helminths of the genus Dirofilaria. Climatic changes are considered to be main risk factors for dirofilariosis spreading. In the Slovak Republic, canine subcutaneous dirofilariosis was recorded for the first time in 2005. In 2007 the first coordinated research project started to detect possible endemic infections and to determine their magnitude. A total of 984 dogs were examined for the presence of microfilariae within 2007-2008. Modified Knott test and PCR were used for microfilariae detection and for Dirofilaria species identification. Dirofil

Hepatozoon canis infection in Slovakia: imported or autochthonous?

Tissue samples from nine red foxes (four samples of striated muscle tissue and five samples of heart tissue) that originated from the Michalovce district (Slovakia), an area with endemic occurrence of canine babesiosis were examined by PCR method using primers amplifying a fragment of the 18S rRNA spanning the V4 region of Babesia and Theileria. An unexpected determination of 450 bp DNA fragment of Hepatozoon canis was found in four samples. Partial sequences of the 18S rRNA gene from the H. canis showed 100% similarity with the sequence from Brasil isolate of H. canis from a pampas fox (Pseud

[Antibiotics in ambulatory practice in Slovakia 1999-2001].

Evaluation of the consumption of antimicrobial drugs is an important component of antibiotic policy and provides a picture of rationality of treatment. In the present paper, the authors analyzed the consumption of antibacterial agents of the ATC group J01 for systemic use in out-patient practice in Slovakia in 1999-2001. The data were taken from materials of all Slovak insurance companies provided by the Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic. The paper evaluated the total out-patient consumption of antimicrobial agents and the financial costs of antibiotic therapy, analyzed the consumption

Larynx cancer in Slovakia and the role of anatomical subsites.

During the time period 1968-92, 6958 laryngeal cancers (6602 in men and 356 in women) were diagnosed in Slovakia and notified to the National Cancer Registry. We analysed long-term trends in incidence, mortality and survival. Mortality and incidence rates in Slovakian men rose rapidly until 1980 and more slowly subsequently. The mortality-to-incidence ratio initially was 40% and increased to 70% in the period 1985-88. A log-linear model showed that the more recent generations experienced the slowest increase in incidence. Incidence and mortality rates in women remained stable and did not excee

Epidemiological features of gastric and oesophageal cancers in Slovakia.

Data from Slovakia were analysed to determine whether, in accordance with observations made in western Europe and the United States, there is an increasing occurrence of tumours around the oesophagogastric junction. However, the increase in oesophageal cancers in this area was found to be attributable to squamous cell carcinomas. This is in keeping with observations made in central and eastern Europe of an increase in the incidence of tobacco- and alcohol-related cancers.

[Retrospective epidemiologic analysis of the occurrence of measles in Slovakia].

The authors give a detailed account of the reported measles morbidity in Slovakia during the past 50 years (almost half a million notified cases). Before vaccination on a mass scale was introduced, some 1% of the notified cases died. The most frequent cause of death was pneumonia, followed by encephalitis. Since 1977 there was not a single death from measles. Before vaccination was introduced preschool children were affected most badly by the morbidity. After introduction of vaccination on a mass scale a systematic shift of the morbidity to older age groups was observed. The morbidity trend fr
