Case report of viral-associated chondroma (chondrogenic neoplasia) in largescale mullet, Planiliza macrolepis, from Pondicherry, Southeast Coast of India.

Neoplasia in wild fish populations is increasingly recognized as an important indicator of environmental stress and ecosystem health. The present study reports the first documented case of chondroma in the largescale mullet Planiliza macrolepis from the southeast coast of India. An adult female exhibiting a conspicuous external tumorous growth near the caudal peduncle was collected from the Pondicherry fish landing centre during a routine survey. Gross examination revealed a firm, irregular, pinkish-white mass measuring approximately 3.0 × 3.1 × 3.2 cm. Histopathological analysis demonstrated

Sodium butyrate stimulates intestinal health and immunity by reshaping the intestinal microbiota and metabolite profile in big-belly seahorses (Hippocampus abdominalis).

This study examined the effects of sodium butyrate (SB) on growth, intestinal health and immunity of big-belly seahorses (Hippocampus abdominalis) suffering frozen diet-induced enteritis and stress. Total 750 seahorses were randomly assigned to five groups in triplicate, and were fed frozen mysids mixed with SB at 0, 1.25, 2.5, 5 and 10 mg/L (based on culture water volume) for 8 weeks, followed by an Edwardsiella tarda challenge. Results demonstrated that the SB1.25 group had a significantly higher specific growth rate, hepatic T-SOD and CAT activities, and lower MDA content than the SB0 group

The United States dried seahorse trade: A comparison of traditional Chinese medicine and ecommerce-curio markets using molecular identification.

Tens of millions of dried seahorses (genus Hippocampus) are traded annually, and the pressure from this trade along with their life history traits (involved parental care and small migration distances and home ranges) has led to near global population declines. This and other forms of overexploitation have led to all seahorse species being listed in Appendix II under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The signatory nations of CITES recommended a 10-cm size limit of seahorses to ensure harvested individuals have reached reproductive matu

Review of threats to the Pacific seahorse Hippocampus ingens (Girard 1858) in Peru.

Illegal wildlife trade has been identified as a major source of global commerce of seahorses. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora listed the genus Hippocampus in Appendix II in 2004, when several countries that commercialized these species also banned transactions through domestic legislation, Peru being one of them. Nevertheless, since the 2004 ban was decreed in Peru, transactions have continued, including international commerce, as well confiscations of illegal seahorse Hippocampus ingens (Girard 1858) products. The authors reviewed three offi

Parasite identification in mullet fish (Mugil curema) from Chautengo Lagoon, Guerrero, Mexico, based on morphology and molecular analysis.

Parasite identification is crucial in areas where no sanitary inspection is conducted on fish, especially considering that parasitic zoonoses like anisakiasis and gnathostomiasis can pose a risk for human health. In this study, parasites in mullet fish (Mugil curema) from the Chautengo Lagoon, Guerrero, Mexico, were identified by morphological and molecular methods. A total of 122 specimens weighing 317 ± 51.25 g and 19.3 ± 1.14 cm in length were assessed. Their helminthofauna was classified by measuring internal structures, total length, and maximum width; a morphometric index was also calcul

Heterogeneous Histories of Recombination Suppression on Stickleback Sex Chromosomes.

How consistent are the evolutionary trajectories of sex chromosomes shortly after they form? Insights into the evolution of recombination, differentiation, and degeneration can be provided by comparing closely related species with homologous sex chromosomes. The sex chromosomes of the threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) and its sister species, the Japan Sea stickleback (G. nipponicus), have been well characterized. Little is known, however, about the sex chromosomes of their congener, the blackspotted stickleback (G. wheatlandi). We used pedigrees to obtain experimentally phased wh

A population approach for the estimation of methylmercury ToxicoKinetics in red mullets.

It is known that, as the vast majority of the anthropogenically emitted mercury can be found in aquatic ecosystems, where several methylating bacteria are present, fish consumption represents the most critical intake source of the most toxic form of mercury, the methylmercury (MeHg). The aim of this work is to predict MeHg levels in the fish muscles which, being the edible portion, are part of the human diet. A physiologically based toxicokinetics model was developed to evaluate the kinetics of MeHg in red mullets. Fishes were described by means of a multi-compartment model including stomach,

Histological and ultrastructural study of Myxobolus mugchelo (Parenzan, 1966) with initial histopathology survey of the Liza ramada host intestine.

This paper provides histological and ultrastructural data on Myxobolus mugchelo (Myxozoa), a parasite of the intestinal wall of thinlip mullet Liza ramada from the Comacchio lagoons (Northern Adriatic Sea, Italy). About 80% of the examined mullets were infected with this myxozoan. In histological sections, the plasmodia appeared rounded to ovoid and spindle shaped, measured 181.61 ± 97 × 122.79 ± 53.16 μm (mean ± standard deviation, SD) in size. Early sporogenic plasmodia were located primarily in the muscle layer where no pronounced inflammatory response was detected. Plasmodia containing mat

Ontogenetic dietary shifts and bioaccumulation of diphenhydramine in Mugil cephalus from an urban estuary.

Though bioaccumulation of pharmaceuticals has received attention in inland waters, studies of pharmaceutical bioaccumulation in estuarine and marine systems are limited. Further, an understanding of pharmaceutical bioaccumulation across size classes of organisms displaying ontogenetic feeding shifts is lacking. We selected the striped mullet, Mugil cephalus, a euryhaline and eurythermal species that experiences dietary shifts with age, to identify whether a model base, diphenhydramine, accumulated in a tidally influenced urban bayou. We further determined whether diphenhydramine accumulation d

Larval Gnathostoma spinigerum Detected in Asian Swamp Eels, Monopterus albus, Purchased from a Local Market in Yangon, Myanmar.

The present study was performed to determine the infection status of swamp eels with Gnathostoma sp. larvae in Myanmar. We purchased total 37 Asian swamp eels, Monopterus albus, from a local market in Yangon in June and December 2013 and 2014. All collected eels were transferred with ice to our laboratory and each of them was examined by the artificial digestion technique. A total of 401 larval gnathostomes (1-96 larvae/eel) were detected in 33 (89.2%) swamp eels. Most of the larvae (n=383; 95.5%) were found in the muscle. The remaining 18 larvae were detected in the viscera. The advanced thir

Description of a New Species of Dermoergasilus planilizai sp. nov. (Copepoda: Ergasilidae) from abu Mullet Planiliza abu (Heckel) Gills at Al-Gharraf River, Southern Iraq.

Dermoergasilus planilizai sp. nov. is described from the gills of the abu mullet Planiliza abu (Heckel), the only freshwater member of the Mugilidae occurring in the Mesopotamian region. Specimens were collected from the Al-Gharraf River, southern Iraq. The new species is distinguished from its closest congener, Dermoergasilus varicoleus [13]; by the following combination of characters: (i) setae on caudal rami distinctly longer than the digitiform process (vs. shorter); (ii) terminal spines on endopod of leg 1 strongly curved (vs. straight); and (iii) free segment of leg 5 approximately three

Changes to the reproductive microbiome of the brood pouch during male pregnancy in seahorses (Hippocampus abdominalis).

IN BRIEF: Reproductive microbiomes contribute to the successful embryogenesis of offspring but are poorly studied in non-mammalian species that exhibit pregnancy. This study characterises the male pregnant seahorse brood pouch microbiome and identifies potential microbial maternal contributions to the pouch, providing insights into the sources and adaptive value of the embryonic microbial environment. ABSTRACT: Seahorses demonstrate an unusual reproductive strategy, in which males incubate embryos inside a complex 'brood pouch' until parturition, analogous to mammalian viviparity. In many spe

Alternative habitat use strategies in the catadromous Chelon ramada inferred by otolith microchemistry.

Otolith chemical analyses of Sr, Ba, and Ca composition were conducted on thinlip grey mullet (Chelon ramada) collected from a freshwater (n = 45) and an estuarine (n = 55) site in the Mondego River (central Portugal) using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) to investigate the species' habitat use patterns. The reconstruction of habitats used provides evidence for a behavioral continuum along the marine-freshwater environments in the Atlantic region. Overall, the estuarine environment is the habitat with the highest residency, yet four distinct behavioral pr

A practical approach to meeting national obligations for sustainable trade under CITES.

Reconciling conservation goals with sustainable resource use requires adaptive management strategies. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) regulates global trade for species listed on Appendix II, partly by requiring member countries (parties) to ensure exports do not damage wild populations (called making positive "nondetriment findings" [NDFs]). Unfortunately, when parties find NDFs difficult, they often suspend legal trade, imposing economic costs and driving trade underground. To make it easier for parties to examine the detrimental na

Independent Evolution of Sex Chromosomes and Male Pregnancy-Related Genes in Two Seahorse Species.

Unlike birds and mammals, many teleosts have homomorphic sex chromosomes, and changes in the chromosome carrying the sex-determining locus, termed "turnovers", are common. Recent turnovers allow studies of several interesting questions. One question is whether the new sex-determining regions evolve to become completely non-recombining, and if so, how and why. Another is whether (as predicted) evolutionary changes that benefit one sex accumulate in the newly sex-linked region. To study these questions, we analyzed the genome sequences of two seahorse species of the Syngnathidae, a fish group in

Evolutionary gain and loss of a pathological immune response to parasitism.

Parasites impose fitness costs on their hosts. Biologists often assume that natural selection favors infection-resistant hosts. Yet, when the immune response itself is costly, theory suggests that selection may sometimes favor loss of resistance, which may result in alternative stable states where some populations are resistant and others are tolerant. Intraspecific variation in immune costs is rarely surveyed in a manner that tests evolutionary patterns, and there are few examples of adaptive loss of resistance. Here, we show that when marine threespine stickleback colonized freshwater lakes,

Distribution of cysts holding Ascocotyle (Phagicola) longa metacercariae in tissues and organs of mugilid.

Ascocotyle (Phagicola) longa is an etiological agent of human phagicolosis. Mugilids are the second intermediate host, the first being Heleobia australis, and mugilids predatory birds and mammals are its definitive hosts. The occurrence of cysts holding A. longa metacercariae is described in mugilids with a prevalence of up to 100%. The wide geographical distribution of A. longa and its intermediate hosts coupled with the rise in the consumption of raw or poorly cooked fish may elevate the risk of human infection. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to verify the distribution pattern of cysts h

Cercarial behaviour alters the consumer functional response of three-spined sticklebacks.

Free-living parasite life stages may contribute substantially to ecosystem biomass and thus represent a significant source of energy flow when consumed by non-host organisms. However, ambient temperature and the predator's own infection status may modulate consumption rates towards parasite prey. We investigated the combined effects of temperature and predator infection status on the consumer functional response of three-spined sticklebacks towards the free-living cercariae stages of two common freshwater trematode parasites (Plagiorchis spp., Trichobilharzia franki). Our results revealed gene

Early stages of infection of three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) with the cestode Schistocephalus solidus.

Parasitic helminths have evolved strategies to evade their host's immune systems. Particularly, the early time of interactions between helminths and their hosts might be decisive for their infection success. We used the cestode Schistocephalus solidus, and its highly specific second intermediate host, the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) to investigate parasite infection and host cellular immune responses starting 1 day postexposure (dpe). We recovered live parasites from stickleback body cavities already 24 hr after exposure. Infection rates increased up to 50% and did not ch
