Periodontitis is one of the most common oral inflammatory diseases, and results in connective tissue degradation and gradual tooth loss. It manifests with formation of periodontal pockets, in which anaerobic and Gram‑negative bacteria proliferate rapidly. Consequently, alteration of the subgingival microbiota is considered the primary etiologic agent of periodontitis. Previous studies have reported that smokers are at increased risk of periodontal disease, in both prevalence and severity, indicating that smoking is a risk factor for the onset and progression of the pathology. In the present st

Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling requires a number of accessory proteins to initiate a signal. MD-2 is one of the accessory proteins with a relevant role in lipopolysaccharide responses. Although cigarette smoke increases TLR4 expression, TLR4 signaling is altered in smokers and in smokers COPD patients. The main aims of this study were to explore whether MD2 is altered in large and small airways of COPD and of smokers without COPD. The expression of MD2 ex vivo was assessed by immunohistochemistry in surgical specimens from current smokers COPD (s-COPD; n = 14), smokers without COPD (S;

This study assessed the prevalence of traditional cardiovascular disease risk factors in 119 adolescent smokers, compared to an age-matched sample of non-smokers. Participants were assessed for body mass index (BMI), relative body fat, systolic/diastolic/mean arterial blood pressure, total serum cholesterol, aerobic fitness, family (parents or siblings) smoking habits and history of cardiovascular disease. The results showed that BMI and relative body fat were significantly increased, while aerobic fitness was significantly decreased in smokers. Male smokers further demonstrated increased dias

Background/Objective: Smoking is known to be associated with reflux-related mucosal damage and deleterious esophageal outcomes, yet no non-invasive imaging biomarkers of smoking-induced esophageal remodeling have been identified. We aimed to compare cervical esophageal ultrasound morphology between habitual smokers and non-smokers, in terms of esophageal wall thickness, number of sonographically discernable wall layers, and esophageal diameter, and investigate whether smoking is an independent predictor of these findings. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 60 participants (30 smokers, 30

In this study, we studied effect of smoking on ascorbic acid level in aqueous humor. A cohort of 112 individuals undergoing cataract surgery for senile cataract (mean ± SD age-65 ± 8 years) was sub-grouped as smoker (n = 56) and non-smoker (n = 56) based on smoking habit. The aqueous humor sample was collected in beginning of the surgery and quantitative ascorbic acid estimation was done by colorimetric method (spectrophotometry at λ = 578 nm) using commercially available assay kits using the auto-analyzer assay procedure. The mean (±SD) aqueous humor ascorbic acid level was 1396 ± 629 μmol/L

This case-controlled clinical trial was performed on the salivary 8-hydroxyguanosine (8-OHdG) levels in smokers and non-smokers with chronic periodontitis after non-surgical periodontal therapy. Subjects (N = 40) with periodontitis (smokers and non-smokers) and with clinically healthy conditions (smokers and non-smokers) were assigned to this study. At baseline, clinical periodontal parameters (plaque index, gingival index, pocket probing depth and clinical attachment levels) were evaluated. Saliva samples were obtained pre- and post-treatment to quantify the 8-OHdG levels using Elisa techniqu

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking can adversely affect the results of many periodontal procedures. The purpose of this study was to determine whether cigarette smoking affects wound healing of subepithelial connective tissue grafts.
METHODS: Seventeen systemically healthy patients with 22 Miller Class I or II mucogingival defects were divided into a non-smoker group or smoker group. Patients were regarded as smokers if they reported smoking 10 to 20 cigarettes per day. The following parameters were documented at the surgery date and 3 and 6 months postoperatively: recession depth (RD), recession

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use is one of the main risk factors for Lung Cancer (LC) development. However, about 10-20% of those diagnosed with the disease are never-smokers. For Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) there are clear differences in both the clinical presentation and the tumor genomic profiles between smokers and never-smokers. For example, the Lung Adenocarcinoma (LUAD) histological subtype in never-smokers is predominately found in young women of European, North American, and Asian descent. While the clinical presentation and tumor genomic profiles of smokers have been widely examined, n

Smoking is a major environmental factor associated with periodontal diseases. However, we still have a very limited understanding of the relationship between smoking and subgingival microflora in the global population. Here, we investigated the composition of subgingival bacterial communities from the pooled plaque samples of smokers and non-smokers, 134 samples in each group, in Korean patients with moderate chronic periodontitis using 16S rRNA gene-based pyrosequencing. A total of 17,927 reads were analyzed and classified into 12 phyla, 126 genera, and 394 species. Differences in bacterial c

In non-human animals, opioid antagonists block the reinforcing and discriminative-stimulus effects of Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), while in human marijuana smokers, naltrexone (50 mg) enhances the reinforcing and subjective effects of THC. The objective of this study was to test a lower, more opioid-selective dose of naltrexone (12 mg) in combination with THC. The influence of marijuana-use history and sex was also investigated. Naltrexone (0, 12 mg) was administered 30 min before oral THC (0-40 mg) or methadone (0-10 mg) capsules, and subjective effects, task performance, pupillary di

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have demonstrated the clinical benefits of sub-antimicrobial dose doxycycline (SDD) in the treatment of chronic periodontitis (CP). The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the role of SDD as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) in the treatment of smokers and non-smokers with CP.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A meta-analysis of two previously reported clinical studies was undertaken. Both were 9-month, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, multi-centre clinical trials that investigated the efficacy of SDD (20 mg doxycycline twice daily) in co

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Whereas accumulation of dentogingival plaque inevitably leads to inflammatory reactions in the adjacent gingival tissue, there is limited information with regard to factors influencing naturally occurring fluctuation between gingival health and disease. The major aims of the present study were to investigate site-specific associations between plaque and gingivitis as well as transition dynamics of naturally occurring gingivitis in smoking and non-smoking young adults.
METHODS: 65 systemically healthy young adults, 19 to 30 years old, participated. 33 volunteers smoked at leas

Even in subjects at high risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the diagnosis is often missed due to lack of awareness of symptoms and risk factors. The objective of this study was to identify predictors of a diagnosis of COPD in symptomatic current and ex-smokers seen in a primary care setting. General practitioners ( n = 241) consecutively recruited subjects ≥ 35 years, with tobacco exposure, at least one respiratory symptom (i.e. cough, sputum, wheeze, dyspnoea and/or recurrent lower respiratory tract infections), and no previous diagnosis of obstructive airways disease. The prevalence of smoking in patients with psychiatric disorders is higher than the prevalence of smoking in general population. Smokers with psychiatric disorders are at a greater risk for medical morbidity and mortality, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease, and cancers, compared to those in the general population. Their life expectancies are considerably reduced (25years). Tobacco-related illnesses are the leading cause of death in patients with psychiatric disorders. Smokers with psychiatric disorders report more severe withdrawal symptoms than those with
