Responses to smoking-related stimuli and early relapse to smoking.

Prior to engaging in treatment for smoking cessation, subjects were tested for their responsiveness to cigarette smoking cues. Subjects performed a role-play with a confederate who lit their preferred brand of cigarette. Heart rate (HR) and galvanic skin conductance were assessed continuously, while urge to smoke and anxiety were rated subjectively after the role-play. Three months after treatment ended, subjects were divided into groups of continuous quitters, verified by expired carbon monoxide measurement, and relapsers. The results showed a significant difference between the groups in the

Effects of marijuana smoking on subjective ratings and tobacco smoking.

Multiple measures of tobacco cigarette smoking and subjective and physiological effect were collected during 90 minute test sessions in volunteer cigarette smokers who also had histories of recreational marijuana use. Before sessions, subjects smoked one marijuana cigarette (placebo or 1.29%, 2.84%, 4.00%) using a standardized puffing procedure. Each dose and placebo was given four times to each subject in a randomized block sequence. Marijuana smoking produced dose-related increases in heart rate, ratings of dose strength and drug liking. However, marijuana produced no significant alterations

Structure fires, smoke production, and smoke alarms.

Smoke inhalation injury causes severe morbidity and death. In the United States, the majority of fatalities from fire and burns occur because of inhalation of smoke. Medical treatment is only supportive; there is no known antidote to the damaging effects of smoke toxicants on pulmonary tissue. Without question, minimization of the morbidity and mortality that are caused by smoke inhalation is best accomplished by prevention of the injury. Effective prevention programs depend on a thorough and detailed understanding of the mechanism of damage caused by smoke, as well as of the available options

Smoking and reproduction: the oviduct as a target of cigarette smoke.

The oviduct is an exquisitely designed organ that functions in picking-up ovulated oocytes, transporting gametes in opposite directions to the site of fertilization, providing a suitable environment for fertilization and early development, and transporting preimplantation embryos to the uterus. A variety of biological processes can be studied in oviducts making them an excellent model for toxicological studies. This review considers the role of the oviduct in oocyte pick-up and embryo transport and the evidence that chemicals in both mainstream and sidestream cigarette smoke impair these ovidu

[Smoking in Morocco: an outline of the anti-smoking campaign].

In Morocco, as in many developing countries, tobacco use has become a plague which aggravates the many already existing problems. A coordinated prevention programme which included research and a variety of educational efforts, has been underway for the past five years. The preliminary stage of the non-smoking campaign consisted of research through use of a variety of standardized questionnaires. The research results showed tobacco use in Morocco to be the following: 23.8% of secondary students are smokers with variation according to family, culture, environment and sex (33% male vs. 8.6% femal

Perceived Stress and Smoking Cessation: The Role of Smoking Urges.

Despite the fact that perceived stress is related to abstinence smoking outcomes, no studies have investigated the mediational effect of specific tobacco-related variables on this relationship. This study aimed to explore the indirect effect of perceived stress on abstinence at the end of treatment through smoking urges. The sample comprised 260 treatment-seeking smokers (58.5% female; Mage = 46.00; SD = 11.1) who underwent psychological smoking cessation treatment. The brief version of the Questionnaire of Smoking Urges (QSU) and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS14) were used. Mediation analyse

Stressor-elicited smoking and craving during a smoking cessation attempt.

Stressors can undermine smokers' attempts to quit smoking. Although contemporary theories and animal models support this idea, human research has struggled to demonstrate definitively the relationship between stressors and smoking. Researchers have employed more ecologically valid methods like ecological momentary assessment to address this question, but studies focusing explicitly on stressors remain sparse and findings inconsistent. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of stressful event intensity on smoking and craving among cigarette smokers during a quit attempt. We conduct

Parental smoking and passive smoking in infants: fathers matter too.

This study examines mothers' and fathers' smoking patterns in different kinds of smoking households, and assesses their relative contribution to infants' exposure to environmental tobacco smoke. It uses data from a cross-sectional survey of 314 smoking households (infants: mean age 10 weeks) in Coventry and Birmingham, England, examining reported tobacco consumption and objective measures of exposure: the study infant's urinary cotinine:creatinine ratios and their mother's salivary cotinine. The study shows that both mothers' and fathers' tobacco smoke make substantial contributions to infant

Health risk behaviors in smoking and non-smoking young women.

PURPOSE: To compare the health, health risk behaviors and stress levels of college female smokers and non-smokers. DATA SOURCES: Forty-one college women, ages 18-21 years, participated in an interview and completed a health survey and the Derogatis Stress Profile. CONCLUSIONS: The smokers perceived themselves to be more overweight (Chi square, p = < .001). Smokers used more marijuana (Chi square, p = < .003) and had higher scores on depression [t (39) = 2.29, p = .028], hostility [t (39) = 2.562, p = .014] and perceived quality of health [t (39) = 2.72, p = .01]. Is smoking automatic? Demands of smoking behavior on attentional resources.

The role of attention in the production of smoking behavior was investigated. Experienced and novice smokers were asked to perform a reaction time (RT) task under 4 conditions: while smoking (smoking), while mimicking all aspects of smoking except inhaling (pseudosmoking), while simply holding a cigarette (holding), and while not smoking (baseline). Experienced smokers' RTs increased during the pseudosmoking and holding conditions compared with baseline but did not differ between the smoking and baseline conditions, suggesting that attentional resources were not required for typical smoking be

[Etiology of bronchial cancer: smoking, passive smoking, environment and occupation].

The inhaled tobacco smoke is the most important determinant in the etiology of lung cancer and there is a clear dose-effect relation between lung cancer risk and the duration of smoking, the number of cigarettes and the intensity of inhalation. The opinions about lung cancer risk from passive smoking are divided and the published data are still in discussion. Occupational substances include chromates, nickel, beryllium, alkylated compounds, vinylchloride, arsenic compounds and in particular asbestos. Fortunately air pollution has no or small part in the etiology of lung cancer.

Perceived and internalized smoking stigma among pregnant women: association with smoking reduction, reactance to smoking health warnings, and intention to discuss smoking with health professionals.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco is an addictive substance associated with numerous serious health effects during pregnancy. Pregnant women who smoke face considerable social disapproval, which could be a barrier to seeking healthcare and ultimately to smoking cessation. This study explored how perceived stigma (i.e., smokers' beliefs about negative judgments of them) and internalized stigma (i.e., internalization of stigmatizing attitudes toward them) may be associated with smoking reduction during pregnancy, reactions to smoking health warnings, and the intention to discuss smoking with health profession

Smoking Cessation Interventions.

In the United States, 1 in 5 adults uses tobacco products. Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States despite its known health effects. Although nearly one-half of people who smoke try to quit each year, only up to 1 in 20 who quit without support achieve abstinence for at least six months. All patients, including school-aged children and adolescents, should be asked if they smoke and offered evidence-based treatments for smoking cessation. Use of the 5 A's framework (ask, advise, assess, assist, arrange) can help clinicians promote smoking ces

Promoting smoking cessation.

Cigarette smoking causes significant morbidity and mortality in the United States. Physicians can use the five A's framework (ask, advise, assess, assist, arrange) to promote smoking cessation. All patients should be asked about tobacco use and assessed for motivation to quit at every clinical encounter. Physicians should strongly advise patients to quit smoking, and use motivational interviewing techniques for patients who are not yet willing to stop smoking. Clinical contacts with unmotivated patients should emphasize the rewards and relevance of quitting, as well as the risks of smoking and

Schizophrenia and smoking.

Smoking is associated with the induction of the CYP 1A2 enzyme, and hence with diminished levels of drugs metabolized by this enzyme. This article presents a hypothetical patient, diagnosed with schizophrenia, who smokes about 10 cigarettes a day. The progress of the patient is examined across several follow up meetings, each of which presents a fresh clinical problem related to smoking and its interaction with the medication. Clinical guidance for each problem is presented along with a brief discussion on the subject. The article concludes with a discussion of other pharmacokinetic considerat

Smoking cessation pharmacotherapy.

Cigarette smoking remains an important risk factor for premature cardiovascular disease and its many complications. There are clear benefits from treating tobacco dependence on the rate of clinical outcomes. In addition to behavioral therapies, various pharmacologic strategies have been developed to help achieve this goal. First-line therapies include nicotine replacement, bupropion and varenicline, a partial nicotine antagonist. Second-line treatments include clonidine and nortriptyline. Additional treatment strategies with less proven efficacy include monoamine oxidase inhibitors, selective
