Physician advice for smoking cessation.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare professionals frequently advise patients to improve their health by stopping smoking. Such advice may be brief, or part of more intensive interventions. OBJECTIVES: The aims of this review were to assess the effectiveness of advice from physicians in promoting smoking cessation; to compare minimal interventions by physicians with more intensive interventions; to assess the effectiveness of various aids to advice in promoting smoking cessation, and to determine the effect of anti-smoking advice on disease-specific and all-cause mortality. Smoking cessation after acupuncture treatment.

Acupuncture is applied, especially in treatment of pain, hemiplegia, obesity, and psychological illnesses including addiction. Recently, ear and body acupuncture have been frequently used in the treatment of smoking. An increase in levels of endorphin, enkephalin, epinephrine, norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine in the central nervous system and plasma has been reported as the most important mechanism of acupuncture. That is, acupuncture application may increase the levels of endorphin, enkephalin, epinephrine, norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine in the central nervous system and plasm

Pharmacological approaches to smoking cessation.

Smoking, the most prominent nongenetic factor contributing to mortality, remains the major public health problem throughout the world. There are nearly 1.1 billion users of nicotine and tobacco products worldwide while approximately one third to half of them will die from smoking-related disease. The habit of smoking is mainly propelled by nicotine, a strongly addictive substance, to which the vast majority of smokers fall victim. Except for the general and specific support and counseling strategies there are now effective treatments for nicotine addiction. Two types of pharmacological therapi

Smoking cessation and weight gain.

Cigarette smoking is the single most important preventable cause of death and illness. Smoking cessation is associated with substantial health benefits. Weight gain is cited as a primary reason for not trying to quit smoking. There is a great variability in the amount of weight gain but younger ages, lower socio-economic status and heavier smoking are predictors of higher weight gain. Weight change after smoking cessation appears to be influenced by underlying genetic factors. Besides, weight gain after smoking cessation is largely because of increased body fat and some studies suggest that it

Promoting smoking cessation in adults.

There is a wealth of opportunities for nurses to facilitate smoking cessation with their patients. Nurses have shown to have a modest but positive effect on cessation rates when they deliver brief or intensive counseling. Because nurses work in a multitude of clinical settings, they can impact both prevention and treatment of nicotine addiction associated with cigarette use. More nurses need to be educated about their role in reducing the morbidity and mortality of tobacco-related diseases.

[Smoking cessation in general practice].

In May 1995 73% of a random sample of 1000 Danish general practitioners (GPs) participated in a survey by anonymously filling in a mailed questionnaire concerning their smoking counselling practice and attitudes to smoking prevention. Among the participating GPs, there were 65% who every week had contact with one or more patients, who wished to quit smoking. Earlier smoking cessation practices such as giving information about the health consequences of smoking were often used. However, few GPs' advice included helping patients set quit dates or making follow-up appointments and most GPs did no

Smoking cessation in office practice.

There can be no question that smoking is a modern version of plague; that, as Camus points out, the public does not comprehend its true nature. As in the metaphorical community in Camus' narrative, the struggle of individuals against the pestilence (including official obstruction) is imperative. Physicians have multiple opportunities to join the war against tobacco. This article has shown how one may help individual patients in smoking cessation or interruption of its initiation and has suggested other activities by which physicians can become health promotion specialists. By assisting in the

Electronic cigarettes for smoking cessation.

BACKGROUND: Electronic cigarettes (ECs) are handheld electronic vaping devices that produce an aerosol by heating an e-liquid. Interventions for waterpipe smoking cessation.

BACKGROUND: While cigarette smoking has declined globally, waterpipe smoking is rising, especially among youth. The impact of this rise is amplified by mounting evidence of its addictive and harmful nature. Waterpipe smoking is influenced by multiple factors, including appealing flavors, marketing, use in social settings, and misperceptions that waterpipe is less harmful or addictive than cigarettes. People who use waterpipes are interested in quitting, but are often unsuccessful at doing so on their own. Therefore, developing and testing waterpipe cessation interventions to help people quit w

Spontaneous Smoking Cessation in Parents.

PURPOSE: To determine the percentage of parents who report quitting spontaneously and examine the factors associated with these quits. METHODS: As part of a cluster randomized control trial addressing parental smoking in a pediatric outpatient setting, 12-month follow-up survey data were collected from parents who had self-identified as smokers when exiting from 10 control practices. Parents were considered to have made a spontaneous quit if they reported not smoking a cigarette, even a puff, in the last 7 days and chose the statement "I did not plan the quit in advance; I just did it" when d

BACKGROUND: Electronic cigarettes (ECs) are handheld electronic vaping devices which produce an aerosol formed by heating an e-liquid. Some people who smoke use ECs to stop or reduce smoking, but some organizations, advocacy groups and policymakers have discouraged this, citing lack of evidence of efficacy and safety. People who smoke, healthcare providers and regulators want to know if ECs can help people quit and if they are safe to use for this purpose.
