Smoking reduction for persons with mental illnesses: 6-month results from community-based interventions.

Persons with mental illnesses use tobacco at significantly higher and heavier rates than the general population, and suffer greater tobacco- related morbidity and mortality. However, there are few existing tobacco cessation interventions for these individuals. This study examined two tobacco cessation interventions, a telephonic quitline intervention (counseling and nicotine replacement therapy) and a community-based group counseling intervention with adults currently receiving community mental health services. At 6-month follow-up, both groups demonstrated significantly reduced tobacco use, b

Reactions to a Nicotine Reduction Policy Among Adolescents Who Smoke: A Qualitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: The Biden administration is pursuing a nicotine reduction policy in the United States to render cigarettes less addictive. In this study, we qualitatively investigated adolescents' subjective responses to very low nicotine content (VLNC) cigarettes, reasons for incomplete adherence to using them, and their expected responses to a nicotine reduction policy. AIMS AND METHODS: Adolescents who smoke cigarettes daily (ages 15-19; N = 60) were enrolled in a 3-week double-blind randomized clinical trial and assigned to smoke either normal nicotine content or VLNC research cigarettes. Exposure to Bupropion-SR vs. Placebo is associated with reductions in smoking among persons receiving methadone with no stated interest in smoking cessation.

Smoking is prevalent among individuals receiving methadone treatment. Reducing smoking among this population is needed as smoking is a leading cause of morbidity and preventable death. Smoking cessation interventions for persons receiving medication for opioid use disorder have yielded small changes in abstinence. Bupropion-SR was developed as an anti-depressant medication and is a first-line medication for smoking cessation. There is limited research on the effectiveness of bupropion-SR on smoking cessation among individuals receiving medication for opioid use disorder. This study is a second

Use of aids for smoking cessation and alcohol reduction: A population survey of adults in England.

BACKGROUND: It is important for policy planning to chart the methods smokers and high-risk drinkers use to help them change their behaviour. This study assessed prevalence of use, and characteristics of users, of support for smoking cessation and alcohol reduction in England. METHODS: Data were used from the Smoking and Alcohol Toolkit Studies, which involve monthly face-to-face computer-assisted interviews of adults aged 16+ in England. We included data collected between June 2014 and July 2015 on 1600 smokers who had made at least one quit attempt and 911 high-risk drinkers (defined as scor

Smoking cessation or reduction in pregnancy treatment methods: a meta-evaluation of the impact of dissemination.

Active and passive exposure to tobacco smoke during pregnancy and infancy is the most serious and preventable cause of adverse maternal, fetal, and infant outcomes in the United States. The multiple risks of tobacco exposure to mothers and infants are definitive, and the clinical and economic benefits of cessation have been documented. This article provides a synopsis of the state of the science and art in this specialized area and reviews the evidence for validity of patient assessment methods and the effectiveness of smoking cessation/reduction treatments for pregnant women. A synthesis of 4

Impact of Smoking Reduction Scenarios on the Burden of Myocardial Infarction in the French Population Until 2035.

AIM: Myocardial infarction (MI) is a cardiovascular disease caused by necrosis of the myocardium, which places a heavy burden on patients. In France, the proportion of daily smokers remains high, reaching at 25.5% in 2020. We evaluated the impact of smoking reduction scenarios on the projection of MI prevalence, mean age of incident cases and number of MI prevented cases until 2035. METHODS AND RESULTS: The French government has introduced smoking cessation policies that have led to an annual decrease in smoking prevalence. Based on this annual decline, we implemented three scenarios (SC) sim

Efficacy of Combining Varenicline and Naltrexone for Smoking Cessation and Drinking Reduction: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Pharmacological treatments that can concomitantly address cigarette smoking and heavy drinking stand to improve health care delivery for these highly prevalent co-occurring conditions. This superiority trial compared the combination of varenicline and naltrexone against varenicline alone for smoking cessation and drinking reduction among heavy-drinking smokers. METHODS: This was a phase 2 randomized double-blind clinical trial. Participants (N=165) who were daily smokers and drank heavily received either 2 mg/day of varenicline plus 50 mg/day of naltrexone or 2 mg/day of vareniclin

Smoking reduction and quality of life in chronic patients with schizophrenia in a Chinese population--A pilot study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Tobacco use is a significant public health issue on a global scale. Prevalence of daily tobacco smoking for men in China is much higher than in the United States. Although prevailing literature suggests a negative relationship between smoking and quality of life, this pilot study sought to evaluate whether smoking reduction/cessation impacted on the perception of quality of life in an in-patient population in China. METHODS: Twenty Chinese patients meeting DSM-IV criteria for schizophrenia were recruited from Beijing Hui-Long-Guan Hospital, an in-patient facility in

Smoking and wound healing problems in reduction mammaplasty: is the introduction of urine nicotine testing justified?

We sought to prove a significant relationship between cigarette smoking and wound healing problems in reduction mammaplasty patients, to show the effect of stopping smoking before the procedure, and to justify the implementation of urine nicotine testing preoperatively. One hundred and seventy-three consecutive patients aged 16 to 67 years underwent bilateral reduction mammaplasty in our institution over 26 months. Patients were advised to stop smoking at least 4 weeks prior to surgery. Records were reviewed and smoking habits reconfirmed via telephone. Wound problems were registered when inte

Performance evaluation of electrosurgical pencils: insights into surgical smoke mitigation and thermal damage reduction.

BACKGROUND: Electrosurgical pencils (ESPs) are essential in modern surgery; however, concerns remain regarding their exposure to surgical smoke and thermal tissue damage. This study quantitatively evaluated four ESPs with a particular focus on two critical aspects: surgical smoke generation and minimization of thermal damage to the surrounding tissues. METHODS: Full-thickness incisions were made on the porcine dorsal skin using six instruments: scalpel, uncoated Bovie, coated Bovie, PlasmaBlade, and Duoblade (with and without suction). Surgical smoke was measured by particle counting, blood l

E-cigarettes for harm reduction among COPD patients who smoke: A pilot investigation.

OBJECTIVE: COPD patients who smoke struggle to quit and have higher rates of lung cancer relative to adults who smoke without COPD. E-cigarettes may be a potential harm reduction tool. This secondary analysis examined the impact of e-cigarette switching on smoking and associated health impacts among COPD patients who smoke. METHODS: COPD patients who smoke and were not motivated to quit (n = 46) completed a 12-week pilot e-cigarette switching trial. At week 12, participants were categorized by use category into complete/predominant switchers (past 7-day e-cigarette use and ≥50% reduction in c

No evidence for reduction of opioid-withdrawal symptoms by cannabis smoking during a methadone dose taper.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To support medication development with cannabinoids, smoked cannabis has been said to alleviate symptoms of opioid withdrawal. We evaluated that hypothesis. METHODS: We analyzed data from the methadone-taper phase of a clinical trial we had conducted. Participants were 116 outpatient heroin and cocaine users (of whom 46 were also cannabis users) who stayed for the 10-week taper. Main outcome measures were weekly urine screens for cannabinoids, plus every-two-week assessments of opioid-withdrawal symptoms. RESULTS: Opioid-withdrawal scores did not differ overall bet

Reduction of head and neck cancer risk following smoking cessation: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Head and neck (HN) cancer comprises the neoplasms originating from the oral cavity, pharynx and larynx. We aimed at reviewing the available literature on the effect of smoking cessation on HN cancer risk. METHOD: We conducted a systematic search in Medline, PubMed and Embase to June 2022. We abstracted or calculated relative risks (RR) and 95% CIs of HN cancer after cessation of tobacco smoking (both former smoking status and duration of quitting) and combined them using random effects meta-analyses. Papers included were case-control or cohort studies available in the English langu

Enhancing panic and smoking reduction treatment with d-cycloserine: Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

There has been relatively little attention focused on treatment strategies for smokers with panic attacks despite their increased risk of relapse. Panic and Smoking Reduction Treatment (PSRT) integrates standard smoking cessation treatment with an exposure-based intervention targeting the mechanisms underlying panic-smoking relations. Building upon emerging evidence supporting the efficacy of d-cycloserine (DCS) for augmenting exposure-based therapy, we are conducting an initial test of the efficacy of DCS for enhancing PSRT outcomes. Utilizing a randomized, double-blind trial comparing PSRT+D

Association of smoking reduction with comorbid psychiatric symptoms including ADHD, depression, anxiety, and alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Current literature supports the hypothesis that patients with comorbid psychiatric symptoms are at pronounced risk of relapse. Studies investigating the co-occurrence of psychiatric symptoms and smoking cessation success in the general population are limited. We aimed to investigate the associations between smoking reduction (including cessation) and various psychiatric diagnoses, including Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), depression, anxiety and Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), among adult smokers 12 months after a smoking cessation attempt. METHODS: Sixty-eight patien

Association of Electronic Nicotine Delivery System Use With Cigarette Smoking Progression or Reduction Among Young Adults.

IMPORTANCE: The prevalence of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) use, including e-cigarettes, among US young adults (YAs) has raised questions about how these products may affect future tobacco and nicotine use among YAs. Given this prevalence and that young adulthood is a critical period for the establishment of tobacco and nicotine use, it is important to consider the association between ENDS use and cigarette smoking specifically in this age group. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether ENDS use frequency or intensity is associated with changes in cigarette smoking among US YA ever smokers

Bupropion-SR for smoking reduction and cessation in alcohol-dependent outpatients: a naturalistic, open-label study.

BACKGROUND: We sought to determine whether sustained-release bupropion (bupropion-SR) reduces smoking and promotes smoking cessation among alcohol-dependent (AD) smokers while they are in early recovery from alcohol. METHODS: We conducted an open-label, naturalistic study among AD smokers enrolled in an outpatient treatment program. The treatment group (n=58) was offered bupropion-SR and brief smoking cessation counseling. A control group (n=57) was matched to the treatment group by age, sex, ethnicity, cigarette use, and years of alcohol dependence. The controls received no smoking cessation
