Proliferative strongyloidiasis in a colony of colubrid snakes.

Strongyloides are small rhabditid nematodes primarily associated with enteric disease in a variety of animal species, including reptiles. Strongyloides spp life stages were associated with a disease outbreak in a large breeding colony of snakes. Multiple Pantherophis and Lampropeltis colubrids exhibited respiratory distress, anorexia, stomatitis, facial deformation, and waning body condition that resulted in death or necessitated euthanasia. Postmortem examinations of 13 snakes revealed epithelial hyperplasia and inflammation of the alimentary and respiratory tracts associated with varying num

Survey of Post-Cranial Skeletal Pathology in Snakes.

Previous reports on skeletal pathology in captive snakes did not clarify the relationship of lesions to captive or free-ranging status. In this study, post-cranial skeletons from 7,950 captive and free-ranging snakes in nine of the major North American collections were examined macroscopically, microscopically and radiologically for the presence of pathology. Micro-computerized tomography was performed on two skeletons on which surface microscopy failed to provide a definitive diagnosis. Osteomyelitis was identified in the vertebrae of 24 snakes and spondyloarthropathy in one snake. Neoplasia

Occurrence of Cryptosporidium sp. in snakes in Japan.

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of Cryptosporidium in snakes in Japan. Fecal samples or intestinal contents of 469 snakes, consisting of five species, were analyzed and Cryptosporidium oocysts were detected only from the Japanese grass snake Rhabdophis tigrinus. The mean prevalence of Cryptosporidium sp. in Japanese grass snakes was approximately 26% in the region studied. Histopathological observations revealed that the organism caused proliferative enteritis in the small intestine. Sequence analysis of a fragment of the small subunit rRNA gene has shown that the partial

Haematopoiesis in snakes (Ophidia) in early postnatal development.

The occurrence of haematopoiesis has been studied in various parts of the spine and in the ribs in four species of snakes (Boa constrictor L., Elaphe guttata L., Lamprophis fulaginosus Boie., Bothrops jararaca Wied.) from hatching until 150 days of postnatal development. Marrow spaces are formed by chondrolysis with various time frames depending on the studied species. Marrow cells egress to the general circulation in two ways: via migration through the endothelial cells lining the venous sinuses or by the rupture of protrusions. Erythroblasts are present in the lumen of marrow sinuses suggest

Drinking in snakes: kinematic cycling and water transport.

Snakes are purported to drink by sucking water into their mouths and then compressing the oral cavity to force water into the oesophagus. Video recordings of drinking behaviour in 23 snakes representing 14 species from three families, combined with simultaneous recordings of water volumes consumed, show that all the snakes vary widely in the amount of water taken in when drinking. This variation is not correlated with kinematic events. Kinematic recordings and indirect measurements of water flow suggest that moving water into the mouth can be decoupled from the processes that move water into t

Kinematics, muscular activity and propulsion in gopher snakes.

Previous studies have addressed the physical principles and muscular activity patterns underlying terrestrial lateral undulation in snakes, but not the mechanism by which muscular activity produces curvature and propulsion. In this study, we used synchronized electromyography and videography to examine the muscular basis and propulsive mechanism of terrestrial lateral undulation in gopher snakes Pituophis melanoleucus affinis. Specifically, we used patch electrodes to record from the semispinalis, longissimus dorsi and iliocostalis muscles in snakes pushing against one or more pegs. Axial bend

[Acute management of patients bitten by poisonous snakes].

The management of poisonous snake bites includes first aid and clinical medical treatment. First aid consists of reassurement of the patient, immobilisation of the bitten limb and rapid transport to the nearest hospital to monitor the vital functions. In no case suction, incision or tight bandages should be applied. The degree of envenomation can be classified in three categories depending on the spread of the symptoms: no symptoms, only local non-progressive symptoms, and systemic or local rapidly progressive symptoms (severe envenomation). Antivenin therapy is indicated in severe envenomatio

An immunocytochemical study of endocrine pancreas of snakes.

The pancreas from eleven species of snakes representing both advanced and primitive families has been investigated for the presence of eleven regulatory peptides reported to occur in the mammalian endocrine pancreas. Of the eleven peptides studied, insulin, pancreatic glucagon and somatostatin were present in endocrine cells within the islets of all the species investigated. The neuropeptide, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, was located within nerve terminals innervating the islets in the Boidinae, Colubrinae, Elaphidae and Crotalidae but absent from the Natricinae investigated. No immunorea

Preattentive bias for snake words in snake phobia?

Stroop interference and skin conductance responses (SCRs) for words related to snakes, spiders, flowers, and mushrooms were studied in a group of women (n=40) with snake phobia who were randomised to a stress or no-stress condition. The 21 low-stress snake phobics showed Stroop interference for unmasked (but not for masked) snake words, compared with 21 age- and sex-matched controls. Stroop interference was not significantly different between high-stress and low-stress snake phobics. No support for stronger SCRs for masked snake words was found in snake phobics in a lexical decision task with

Collett's snake (Pseudechis colletti) envenoming in snake handlers.

BACKGROUND: Collett's snake (Pseudechis colletti) is a member of the black snake genus and occurs in a warm temperate to sub-tropical region of central Queensland, Australia. There are no reports of bites occurring in the wild, and bites were previously thought to cause only minor effects. They are a popular snake among zoos and exotic snake keepers. AIM: To investigate the clinical effects of severe envenoming by Collett's snake, and possible treatment options. DESIGN: Case series. METHODS: Clinical and laboratory features are described for six bites, all in snake handlers. RESULTS: All s

[Snake bite by a poisonous snake. Report of an unusual case].

We report on a 31-year-old white woman, who was bitten in her right calf by a "spitting cobra" (Neia nigricollis) during a safari in Tansania. Minor initial systemic symptoms such as nausea and vomiting were followed by severe oedematous swelling of the extremity after 2-3 h and demarcation of a 2.75 x 2.75 in. area of necrotic skin. The patient returned to her home country, where 8 days after the snake-bite necrosectomy was performed. Antibiotics, anti-inflammatory agents and local therapy with hydrocolloidal wound dressings were administered. With this therapy the lesion healed completely wi

Ecological context modulates the visual detection advantage for snakes.

Research indicates that the human visual system is highly efficient at detecting snakes, yet less is known about how ecological visual contexts modulate this advantage. We conducted two experiments with university students (N = 58 each) to test whether background complexity influences snake-detection efficiency using a dual-task paradigm. In Experiment 1, stimuli were presented on a uniform grey background. Here, snakes were detected and visually fixated significantly faster than non-snake control animals, consistent with previous findings. Crucially, this advantage was not influenced by parti

Exceptional brain and ecological diversity in the earliest snakes.

Understanding the ecological origin of snakes has remained a century-old challenge1,2, hindered by an extremely sparse early fossil record and conflicting interpretations of fossil ecologies. Here we describe an exceptionally preserved Cretaceous fossil snake, Tametara mirim gen. et sp. nov., from Brazil, representing one of the earliest-diverging stem snakes. High-resolution micro-CT scans reveal unprecedented details of cranial nerves, inner ear and brain anatomy, enabling the most integrated reconstruction of stem snake neuroanatomy to date. Quantitative and qualitative endocast analyses de

Prevalence of Gastrointestinal Parasitic Infections in Captive Snakes, Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal (GI) parasitic infections are a common health concern in captive snakes, potentially affecting their well-being. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated risk factors of helminth and protozoan infections in venomous and non-venomous snakes. METHODS: A total of 174 faecal samples were collected from venomous and non-venomous captive snakes housed at the Venom Research Centre of Chattogram, Bangladesh, between September 2024 and January 2025. Venomous snakes were housed individually in climate-controlled terrariums and received biannual deworming;

Heads and Tails: Comparative Osteology of Nearctic Dipsadid Snakes.

Although numerous studies have addressed some aspects of the cranial osteology of Nearctic dipsadid species, only the species within the genera Heterodon and Carphophis have a formal published description of their skull. Similarly, vertebral data on such species are extremely scarce, and most of the available literature is focused on fossils. Such group has a complex phylogenetic history, being recovered as monophyletic or nonmonophyletic depending on the approach. In this paper, we provide detailed and comparative descriptions of the osteology of dipsadid species distributed in the Nearctic r
