Air-snow interactions and atmospheric chemistry.

The presence of snow greatly perturbs the composition of near-surface polar air, and the higher concentrations of hydroxyl radicals (OH) observed result in a greater oxidative capacity of the lower atmosphere. Emissions of nitrogen oxides, nitrous acid, light aldehydes, acetone, and molecular halogens have also been detected. Photolysis of nitrate ions contained in the snow appears to play an important role in creating these perturbations. OH formed in the snowpack can oxidize organic matter and halide ions in the snow, producing carbonyl compounds and halogens that are released to the atmosph

[Snow-boarding injuries can be prevented].

The last four winter seasons have witnessed a dramatic increase in the popularity of snowboarding. A series of snowboarding injuries treated at University Hospital, Umeå, predominantly consisted of those sustained by teenage boys, often when jumping or losing balance for other reasons. The upper extremities were the most common sites of injury, 2/3 of these injuries being fractures. The commonest type of lower extremity injury was sprain, and 2/3 of lower extremity injuries affected the foremost leg. To prevent injuries, it is recommended that snowboard bindings should be modified by the intro

Visual Snow: A Review on Pathophysiology and Treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Visual snow (VS) is a rare clinical entity in neuro-ophthalmology. It is described as the presence of flickering dots affecting the whole visual field, often compared by patients to snow or pixelated television static. Importantly, it can be an alarming symptom for many patients, lowering their quality of life. Our purpose is to increase awareness of this disease, because many healthcare professionals have difficulty identifying symptoms as the nature of the condition is subjective. In this review, we aimed to describe the updates in the etiology and treatment of visual snow. We sea

Neuroimaging in Visual Snow - A Review of the Literature.

Since the first description of visual snow syndrome (VSS) in 1995, there has been increasing interest particularly within the past 5-10 years in phenotyping the condition and differentiating it from conditions such as migraine with aura and hallucinogen persisting perception disorder. Structural and functional neuroimaging has provided valuable insights in this regard, yielding functional networks and anatomical regions of interest, of which the right lingual gyrus is of particular note. Various modalities, including functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), positron emission tomography (P

Prevalence of visual snow syndrome in the UK.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Visual snow syndrome is a recently described condition of unknown prevalence. We investigated the prevalence in a representative population sample from the UK and tested the hypothesis that visual snow syndrome is associated with young age, headache, tinnitus and mood impairment. METHODS: Using a crowdsourcing platform, we recruited a representative sample of 1015 adult laypeople from the UK, matched for age, gender and ethnicity according to national census data. Participants were unprimed, i.e. were inquired about the 'frequency of certain medical conditions' but not

John Snow and cholera--the bicentenary of birth.

The bicentenary of John Snow's birth, a legend in his field, for his research on epidemiology and the prevention ofcholera, constitutes a unique opportunity to commemorate this iconic figure. In the article, his spectacular achievements in this discipline are presented, including his epidemiological investigation during cholera epidemic and the well-known Broad Street intervention in Soho, in 1854, as well as his methodologically elegant experiment "on the grandest scale" in which he compared the cholera fatality rates in households served by two different water supply companies. Development of a mechanism for nitrate photochemistry in snow.

A reaction mechanism to reproduce photochemical processes in the snow is reported. We developed a box model to represent snow chemistry. Constrained by laboratory experiments carried out with artificial snow, we deduced first a reaction mechanism for N-containing species including 13 reactions. An optimization tool was developed to adjust systematically unknown photolysis rates of nitrate and nitrite (NO(2)(-)) and transfer rates of nitrogen oxides from the snow to the gas phase resulting in an optimum fit with respect to the experimental data. Further experiments with natural snow samples are

MRI of snow skiing and snowboarding injuries.

Snow skiing has been called "the world's oldest sport," "the fastest non-motorized sport on Earth," and "the riskiest sport undertaken by adults on a routine basis." This article discusses the common mechanisms for orthopedic injuries occurring in two of the most popular winter sports in the world that have a reputation for an inherently high risk of injury: alpine skiing and snowboarding. The emphasis herein is on magnetic resonance imaging of characteristic injuries in skiers (knee, thumb, shoulder) and in snowboarders (wrist, forearm, ankle). Spine injuries in snowboarders and skiers are al

John Snow: Anesthesiologist, Epidemiologist, Scientist, and Hero.

A 19th century physician was crucial to the establishment of 2 medical specialties-anesthesiology and public health. Everyone whose interest in public health has increased in the last year will be amazed at Dr John Snow's career in anesthesiology. Those who recognize him as the first full-time physician anesthetist will be struck by his development of medical mapping during the Cholera Pandemic of 1848, resulting in one of the fundamental techniques of epidemiology and public health that has continued through today. Snow's accomplishments in anesthesiology and epidemiology reflected a concaten

[Visual snow in hallucinogen-persisting perception disorder].

This article presents the case of a 24-year-old female patient who was referred to this department due to permanent flickering in front of both eyes. This flickering, described as being like visual snow in television, had started 1.5 years ago and was perceived to be very disturbing. Visual acuity, visual field and morphology of the anterior and posterior segment were bilaterally inconspicuous. A neurological examination including a magnetic resonance imaging of the cranium (cMRI) and visual evoked potentials (pattern-VEP) also showed no abnormalities. Furthermore, the patient suffered from sc

Pediatric snow sport injuries differ by age.

BACKGROUND: Unintentional injury is the leading cause of death among pediatric patients. There were 13,436 injuries related to snow sports in those younger than 15 in 2015, with 4.8% requiring admission. These sports are high-risk given the potential for injury even when using protective equipment. We hypothesized that snow sport injury patterns would differ based on patient age. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of the 2009 and 2012 Kids' Inpatient Database was performed. Cases of injuries were identified and analyzed using ICD-9 codes. National estimates were obtained using case weighting

The snow-shoveler's ST elevation myocardial infarction.

Heavy snowfall, cold temperatures, and low atmospheric pressure during the winter months have been associated with increased adverse cardiovascular events. However, only a few cases of the "snow shoveler's infarction" have been reported. The investigators describe their experience with 6 patients presenting with ST elevation myocardial infarctions, all within a 24-hour period during an unprecedented snowfall (4 of whom were shoveling snow), and provide a detailed review of previously reported cases of snow shoveler's infarction. Consistent with other reports, most patients reported here had th

Hydrogen peroxide enteritis: the "snow white" sign.

Hydrogen peroxide is a useful disinfectant that has achieved widespread utility in varied clinical settings. We report an epidemic of hydrogen peroxide enteritis that developed in seven patients in our gastrointestinal endoscopy unit during a 2-week period in early 1988. During endoscopy, using recently sterilized endoscopes that were flushed with 3% hydrogen peroxide after the glutaraldehyde cycle, instantaneous blanching (the "snow white" sign) and effervescence were noted on the mucosal surfaces when the water button was depressed. No patient subsequently suffered morbidity or mortality ass

Assessment of a novel patient reported outcome measure for visual snow syndrome: the Colorado visual snow survey 2.0.

INTRODUCTION: Visual snow syndrome (VSS) is a condition in which people experience a continuous overlay of small dots atop their entire visual field. As a newly recognized condition, there is a gap in patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) that target VSS symptom impact. METHODS: We sought to assess the Colorado Visual Snow Survey 2.0 (CVSS) as a possible PROM for VSS using a convenience sample of undergraduate students and people with VSS recruited through the Visual Snow Initiative (N = 144). RESULTS: We found the CVSS (1) strongly differentiated people with VSS from healthy controls, (

Visual snow syndrome and migraine: a review.

Visual snow syndrome is a neurological condition characterized by ongoing prominent phenomena described consistently as tiny dots moving across the entire visual field, often associated with complex visual symptoms. These can take the form of afterimages, entoptic phenomena, nyctalopia and light sensitivity. Although some of these symptoms can be benign, they can nonetheless become significantly impactful for many who experience them, particularly in cases that have a sudden and abrupt start. As visual snow syndrome becomes increasingly recognized in clinical practice we begin to learn about i

VISUAL SNOW SYNDROME IN A PEDIATRIC CASE.

INTRODUCTION Visual snow (VS) is a rare condition that is characterized by continuous dynamically flickering dots in the entire visual field that imitate the 'static' or 'snow' of an analogue television set that is not connected to the antenna (1). VS was first described in 3 of 10 migraineurs patients who presented with a spectrum of positive visual symptoms (2). The symptoms of VS can persist for many years. Although VS might be expressed in patients with migraine as visual aura, persistent VS has been accepted as a distinct clinical entity and termed as visual snow syndrome (VSS) independen
