The toxic gift: reciprocity and social capital in cigarette exchange in China.

The widespread exchange of tobacco cigarettes as a gift in some societies normalises the symbolic desirability of tobacco products and promotes smoking. Little is known about how and why people exchange toxic substances as gifts. This study argues two key factors involved in social exchange processes - reciprocity and social capital - can explain gift cigarette circulation. We conducted a multistage survey among household heads from China and measured the quantity and monetary values of outgoing and incoming gift cigarettes circulated by each household and measured social capital in three dime

The privatization of human services: myths, social capital and civil society.

It is fashionable to point to privatization and the involvement of for-profits as the parties responsible for many, if not most, of the ills that plague the social welfare system today. This article takes a contrary point of view. Three arguments are made. First, private sector human service delivery and the use of for-profits in the United States predate privatization as a defined public policy. Second, the privatization of the human services is a world wide phenomenon that transcends politics and ideology. Third, the privatization of human services helps to promote civil society and generate

Social capital and cognitive decline: Does sleep duration mediate the association?

BACKGROUND: Studies have found that social capital (SC) is associated with the risk of cognitive decline; however, the mechanism explaining how SC leads to cognitive decline is unclear. The current study examines the mediation effect of sleep duration on the relationship between SC and cognitive decline in Chinese older adults. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 955 community-dwelling aged 60 or over was conducted. The mini-mental state examination (MMSE), self-report sleep duration questionnaire, and social capital scales were administered during the face-to-face survey. The Bootstrap metho

Individual and neighbourhood determinants of social participation and social capital: a multilevel analysis of the city of Malmö, Sweden.

The aim of this study was to analyse the impact of neighbourhood on individual social capital (measured as social participation). The study population consisted of 14,390 individuals aged 45-73 that participated in the Malmö diet and cancer study in 1992-1994, residing in 90 neighbourhoods of Malmö, Sweden (population 250,000). A multilevel logistic regression model, with individuals at the first level and neighbourhoods at the second level, was performed. The study analysed the effect (intra-area correlation and cross-level modification) of the neighbourhood on individual social capital after

When minds and networks matter: how mental health and social capital shape social frailty in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Social frailty represents a critical dimension of aging, yet its specific associations with mental health and social capital remain underexplored, particularly in non-Western contexts. This study investigated the influence of psychological distress and social capital on social frailty among older adults in Egypt. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study conducted at a university hospital outpatient clinic, 316 adults aged ≥60 years were assessed using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21), the Personal Social Capital Scale-16 (PSCS-16), and the Social Frailty Scale (SFS-8).

Exploring Junior Residents' Barriers in Mobilizing Social Capital and Their Coping: A Qualitative Ego Social Network Study.

BACKGROUND: Residents rely on social support from team members to navigate patient care, while also facing challenges integrating into the healthcare team. Although prior research has explored help-seeking behavior, little attention has been given to how residents overcome barriers to mobilizing social resources. This study explores how, in daily clinical practice, do residents perceive and respond to barriers in accessing and making use of social capital during challenging situations? METHODS: We used a mixed-methods social network approach. Twenty-nine junior residents from various specialt

Social capital in South Africa's minibus taxi industry: networks, trust, and challenges.

INTRODUCTION: The minibus taxi industry is a cornerstone of South Africa's public transport system, providing daily mobility to millions of commuters, particularly in low-income and peri-urban areas. Despite its economic and social importance, the industry remains largely informal, characterized by precarious labor conditions, weak regulatory oversight, and recurring conflict among operators. This paper examines how social capital - understood as networks, trust, and shared norms - shapes governance, labor relations, and operational practices within the industry. METHODS: This study employs a

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOCIAL CAPITAL AND WORKERS' MENTAL HEALTH IN CONTEMPORARY CHINA.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: Against the backdrop of evolving work patterns and social structures in contemporary society, workers' mental health faces sustained challenges. As an important socio-psychological resource, the protective role of social capital warrants continuous examination. This study aims to empirically examine the relationship between social capital and its different dimensions (social networks, social trust, and reciprocity) and the mental health of Chinese workers using nationally representative data, and to explore its heterogeneity across different income groups. Genetic endowments for social capital: An investigation accounting for genetic nurturing effects.

Despite social capital having been shown to be important for health and well-being, relatively little research has examined genetic determinants. Genetic endowments for education have been shown to influence human, financial, and health capital, but few studies have examined social capital, and those conducted have yet to account for genetic nurturing. We used the Add-Health data to study the effect of genetic endowments on individual social capital using the education polygenic score (PGS). We used sibling fixed effects models and controlled for the family environment to account for genetic n

Death literacy as relational capability: Pathways from social capital to emotional support.

BACKGROUND: Death literacy not only refers to the knowledge and skills of individuals; there is emerging evidence that death literacy is relational and is deepened via social networks and within communities. Exploring these relationships can improve our understanding of pathways that influence death literacy and public health palliative care initiatives. OBJECTIVES: To examine how community-level resources (social capital) influence perceived emotional support, and to test theoretically motivated mediators-including community openness to conversations about death, participation in end-of-life

Improving Social Recovery Capital Research To Enhance Clinical Utility: A Proposed Agenda.

Social recovery capital (SRC) is the combination of social resources that can be used to initiate and sustain addiction recovery through friends, family, and peers. Broadly, understanding one's SRC allows us to get a sense of where one has social support for recovery and where there may be social barriers to their recovery process. SRC is often a vital component of many people's recovery journey, yet our understanding of how best to use this concept in research and practice remains underdeveloped. To improve understanding of the role of social recovery capital and strategies to measure and inc

Effects of Family Interventions on Social Capital: The Role of Nuclear Family Orientation.

Evidence stresses that family interventions mostly involve members of the nuclear family unit and therefore exclude other potentially significant individuals. This study hypothesizes that such a nuclear family orientation has unintended consequences for the development of family-based social capital in family interventions. This study was based on a sample of 48 parents enrolled in a family intervention program in Switzerland. Data were collected and analyzed at two time points using egocentric network analysis. The results showed that practitioners mainly involved parents and their children i

Social capital and women's narratives of homelessness and multiple exclusion in northern England.

Women experiencing three or more co-occurring issues (homelessness, substance misuse, mental health) are a highly vulnerable population associated with multimorbidity. Taking women's life stories of trajectories into social exclusion in the north of England as its focus, this paper aims to explore the complexity of social contexts in which women navigate extreme health inequalities. Of the few studies that have examined women's experiences of homelessness through the lens of social capital, most have focused on network size, rather than the quality and influence of the relationships which prec

Consulting the Community on Strategies to Strengthen Social Capital for Community Disease Control.

Excluding communities in planning and implementing research maximizes internal risks that are otherwise visible and avoidable when there is adequate community consultation. Communities might not meaningfully use research results if majority of the researched people have minimal or no participation in information generation and dissemination. However, effective participation of researched communities in research is key to transferring knowledge to action. Using a qualitative approach, the study identified barriers to, and relevant strategies for improving health research uptake, particularly fo
