Social class and male cancer mortality in New Zealand, 1984-7.

Social class differences in cancer mortality among New Zealand men aged 15-64 years are examined for the period 1984-7. Age-standardised rates are presented for all cancer deaths, and for 23 specific cancer sites. The strongest social class mortality gradients were found for cancers of the larynx, liver, buccal cavity/pharynx, oesophagus, lung and for soft tissue sarcoma. On the other hand, rectal cancer, malignant melanoma, colon cancer, brain/nervous system cancers, and multiple myeloma showed higher death rates for the more advantaged socioeconomic groups. Lung cancer accounted for 54.1% of

Social class identity and mental health in emerging adults: The mediating roles of greenspace and spatial social networks.

Emerging adulthood is a critical developmental period often marked by elevated vulnerability to mental health challenges, including depressive symptoms and psychological distress (PD). Understanding how social, environmental, and digitally embedded factors interact to shape mental health during this stage is essential for developing effective interventions. This study examines the relationships between social class identity (SCI), green space utilization (GSU), spatial social networks (SSN), and mental health outcomes among 2413 U.S. emerging adults aged 18-29 years, using cross-sectional surv

Mortality by occupation-based social class in Italy from 2012 to 2014.

OBJECTIVES: Evaluating socio-economic inequality in cause-specific mortality among the working population requires large cohort studies. Through this census-based study, we aimed to quantify disparities in mortality across occupation-based social classes in Italy. METHODS: We conducted a historical cohort study on a sample of more than 16 million workers. We estimated the mortality rate ratios for each social class, considering upper non-manual workers as reference. RESULTS: Non-skilled manual workers showed an increased mortality from upper aero-digestive tract, stomach and liver cancers, a

Social class difference in catch up growth in a national British cohort.

AIM: To examine the influence of socioeconomic status on growth pattern in height from age 7 to 23 years. METHODS: Prospective cohort study. A total of 10 200 white singleton born children from the 1958 British birth cohort (National Child Development Study) were analysed. RESULTS: Differences in height by birth weight persisted throughout the follow up period. However, the mean differences in height between low birth weight infants (<2500 g) and adequate birth weight infants (>/=2500 g) were less notable in social classes I and II than in the lower social classes. The catching up of growth

Latent classes of maladaptive personality traits exhibit differences in social processing.

OBJECTIVE: Social processing (SP) deficits manifest across numerous mental disorders. However, this research has been plagued by heterogeneity and a piecemeal approach whereby skills are examined in isolation rather than as part of an integrated cognitive system. Here, we combined two dimensional frameworks of psychopathology to address these limitations. METHOD: We utilized the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) to distill trait-related heterogeneity within a community sample (n = 200), and the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) 'Systems for Social Processes' to comprehensively

Unemployment and mental health: Evidence of effect heterogeneity by social class in the UK.

The causal effect of unemployment on mental health is well-documented, yet a given job loss episode likely does not harm everyone uniformly. Who is hurt, and how deeply, is contingent on an individual's position in the stratification structure, a dimension that has received little attention compared to gender and age. Drawing on Fundamental Cause Theory, we argue that social class shapes both exposure and vulnerability to unemployment and hypothesise a social gradient whereby the salariat is buffered against the mental health penalties of job loss relative to intermediate and working-class pos

Social adjustment of children with cerebral palsy in mainstream classes: peer perception.

The aim of this study was to describe the social experience of children with cerebral palsy (CP) in mainstream classes in Canada and compare it with that of their classmates without disability. The CP group included 25 females and 35 males (mean age 10 y 5 mo [SD 0.95], range 10 y 4 mo-10 y 10 mo) diagnosed as having hemiplegia (n=44) or diplegia (n=16) and classified as Level I on the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS). Genetic and environmental influences on the relation between parental social class and mortality.

BACKGROUND: Genetic and maternal prenatal environmental factors as well as the post-natal rearing environment may contribute to the association between childhood socioeconomic circumstances and later mortality. In order to disentangle these influences, we studied all-cause and cause-specific mortality in a cohort of adoptees, in whom we estimated the effects of their biological and adoptive fathers' social classes as indicators of the genetic and/or prenatal environmental factors and the post-natal environment, respectively. METHODS: In all 12 608 children born 1924-47 in Denmark who were pla

The role of race and social class in the psychiatric disorders of treated narcotic addicts.

To test a clinical impression that lower-class Black narcotic addicts from a ghetto "welfare" setting primarily manifest reactive schizophrenia when they become mentally ill, whereas White lower-middle- or working-class addicts primarily manifest reactive depression when they become neurotic or psychotic, a series of 20 consecutive mentally ill addicts from each group were compared with respect to diagnosis. The two groups were matched for age and sex. The findings overwhelmingly supported the hypothesis and are interpreted as confirming it insofar as the nature of our two populations permitte

Mood as an indicant of happiness: ags, sex, social class, and situational differences.

Does mood vary as a function of age, sec, or situation? In four investigations, 6,452 persons aged 4 to 99 were interrupted at leisure, at home, at school, and at work and asked to assess their mood as being happy, neutral, or unhappy. Moods of happiness and neutrality were each reported about 45% and unhappiness about 10% of the time. Females more frequently reported moods of happiness or unhappiness than males, while mood did not vary as a function of age. Persons at leisure reported more affectively pleasant moods than those at work, at home, or at school. Persons of higher socioeconomic st

The Effects of Social Class on Individuals' Decision-Making Tendencies in a Prestige-Money Game: Social Value or Instrumental Value?

Through a series of three experiments, this study explored the possible influence of social class on the decision-making tendency of prestige-seeking in a Prestige-Money Game, and further explored the internal sources of such influence. In Experiment 1, the participants' social class was manipulated to examine whether there were class effects in prestige-seeking when individuals of different social classes were paired together in a Prestige-Money Game. In Experiment 2, social rank, which only contained ranking differences, was adopted as a more abstract proxy variable for social class to inves

Effects of social class differences and social mobility on growth in height, weight and body mass index in a British cohort.

By longitudinally linking follow-up restudies of the National Child Development Study it has been possible to examine not only the well-known association of social class with the size of the child, but also with longitudinal growth, and, in addition the effect of social mobility on growth. The relation of type of occupation of the male head of household to height and weight of the child is seen at all ages (7, 11 and 16) but class influence on growth from 7 years onward is minimal. Social mobility is a significant factor especially in relation to stature but is not significantly related to gro

The relationship between physical exercise and social trust: evidence from the CGSS 2023 and the potential roles of social interaction, social support and class identity.

INTRODUCTION: Physical exercise (PE) may play an important role in enhancing residents' social trust; however, further research is needed to clarify the mechanisms underlying this association. This study examines the relationship between PE and social trust among Chinese residents and explores its potential mediating mechanisms, thereby providing empirical evidence for understanding the social psychological effects of exercise and promoting social harmony. METHODS: This cross-sectional observational study used data from the nationally representative China General Social Survey (CGSS) 2023. Af

Encircled by Class: Examining the Association Between Social Class Discrimination From Multiple Sources and the Variety of Substances Used Among Adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Social class discrimination refers to interpersonal bias based on social class and can originate from multiple sources. Adolescence is a critical period for examining this phenomenon, as it is linked to important behavioral and health outcomes. Substance use is one such outcome and remains a major global public health concern. While social class discrimination has been linked to tobacco use, its association with adolescent substance use remains unexplored. To address this gap, we investigated the association between social class discrimination from peers, classmates, school perso

Height and social class in male adolescents from different ethnic backgrounds in Israel.

The relationship between height and social class, independent of the effect of ethnic background was examined. This is a population-based study of 17-year-old israeli-born Jewish males born between 1966-1969 who underwent routine physical examination prior to army recruitment. Inductees descending from 9 ethnic backgrounds-Germany, Hungary, India, Morocco, Poland, Romania, Russia, Yemen and at least 3rd-generation israeli-born were used for this analysis.
