Existing studies on multimorbidity have largely excluded oral diseases in multimorbidity prevalence estimates. The reason behind this is somewhat unclear, as chronic oral conditions are highly prevalent, affecting over half the global population. To address this gap, we examined the relationship between social disadvantage and multimorbidity, stratifying by the inclusion and exclusion of oral conditions. For participants aged 30 y and over (n = 3,693), cross-sectional analysis was carried out using the US National Health and Nutrition Survey (2013-2014). Multimorbidity was defined as having 2

Social avoidance is highly detrimental for natural behavior. Despite much research on this topic, the mechanisms underlying the development of social avoidance as a consequence of social-related traumatic experiences remain highly elusive. To investigate this issue, we adapted a mouse model of social threat conditioning in which mice received shock punishment during exploration of an unfamiliar conspecific. This resulted in prominent and lasting reductions in social behavior, effects that were not observed in mice that received shock punishment in the absence of a social stimulus. Furthermore,

Male Syrian hamsters are naturally aggressive animals that reliably defend their home territory against intruding conspecifics. Hamsters that lose agonistic encounters subsequently exhibit a striking change in their agonistic behavior, however, expressing no aggression and instead becoming highly submissive, a behavioral change that we have termed conditioned defeat. We have generally employed an inescapable defeat training protocol when studying conditioned defeat. The purpose of the present study was to determine if conditioned defeat is an epiphenomenon of the inescapable defeat experience

Although overgeneralization seems to be a hallmark of several anxiety disorders, this until now has not been investigated in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Therefore, we examined fear generalization in 26 SAD patients and 29 healthy controls (HC) using two faces as conditioned stimuli (CS+, CS-), and a loud scream and a fearful face as unconditioned stimulus (US). Generalization was tested by presenting both CS and four morphs of the two faces (generalization stimuli [GSs]), while ratings, heart rate (HR) and skin conductance responses (SCR) were recorded. Results revealed that SAD patients ra

Fear conditioning studies have shown that social anxiety is associated with enhanced expectancy of aversive outcome. However, the relation between cognitive expectancy and social anxiety has never been tested in avoidance conditioning paradigms. We compared 48 low (LSA) and high socially anxious individuals (HSA) on subjective expectancy of aversive outcome during an avoidance conditioning task. Displays of neutral faces were coupled with an aversive outcome (US): a shout and a shock. Participants could avoid the US by pressing a correct button from a button box. First, HSA showed higher US ex

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the review is to describe features of interventions that address social and structural conditions for individuals with select complex, chronic conditions: multiple sclerosis (MS), inflammatory arthritis, diabetes, or frailty.
INTRODUCTION: Despite advances in health care over the past 30 years, substantial heterogeneity in health outcomes persists across people with complex, chronic conditions. Social and structural conditions affect this heterogeneity and contribute to social vulnerability, marginalization and equity-seeking status.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: We will

BACKGROUND: The need for social care, in the form of practical assistance and personal care, is increasing alongside a growing older population with long-term conditions and places those with limited or no access to publicly funded care at risk of increasing levels of unmet need.
AIM: This systematic review sought to understand the role of social and health conditions in the need, demand, utilization, and expenditure on social care in the United Kingdom.
METHODS: We searched Medline, CINAHL, EconLit, ASSIA, and the Campbell Collaboration from January 1, 2009 to April 14, 2025, and gray liter

OBJECTIVES: Social condition mobility refers to an individual's ability to move up or down the social ladder during their lifetime. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between social conditions and periodontitis in an adult Norwegian population, specifically the role of social mobility and employment status.
METHODS: The study was cross-sectional, based on data collected from a subset (n = 3717) of 21 083 participants in a population health study (The Tromsø Study: Tromsø7) aged 40-99 years. Data were collected through questionnaires and clinical examinations. Periodontitis

OBJECTIVE: To unveil current medical and psychosocial conditions of patients with West syndrome in Japan.
METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was performed in patients with West syndrome registered in the Rare Epilepsy Syndrome Registry (RES-R) of Japan. Furthermore, new-onset patients registered in the RES-R were observed prospectively and their outcomes after one and two years of follow-up were compared with data at onset.
RESULTS: For the cross-sectional study, 303 patients with West syndrome were included. Seizures (such as spasms, tonic seizures and focal seizures) occurred daily in 69.

During World War I, social and health conditions were difficult in Brod na Savi, as it stationed a large number of troops, and the military hospital was crowded with patients. With so many able-bodied men and breadwinners mobilised, the town's economy verged on the brink of poverty, but people managed to keep starvation at bay. The most common diseases among civilians were tuberculosis, malaria, intestinal infectious diseases, diphtheria, and venereal diseases, and in 1915 cholera broke out that lasted five months. At the end of 1918 "Spanish flu" also hit the town. The number of wounded and s

PURPOSE: Vulvar cancer and precursor conditions including vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN) impose substantial burden, yet patient information provision remains poorly evidenced. Stigma and taboo contribute to diagnostic delays of 6-11 months. This study used social listening to map the online information-seeking landscape of women with vulvar cancer and VIN, with the aim of informing phase-integrated supportive care strategies.
METHODS: Questions were collected from six publicly accessible online platforms in the Netherlands, the UK, and the US (November 2025-January 2026), encompassing

Social determinants of health, such as food insecurity, can significantly impact patient welfare, potentially increasing the prevalence of chronic illnesses while hindering their management, as shown in previous data collected by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. This study aimed to investigate the association between food insecurity and other social determinants of health with hyperlipidemia, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and hypertension. To that end, self-reported data on food security from clinical encounters and biological data from medical records were collected. T

Social media consumption can transmit normative cues that shape health behaviors, yet how different types of normative information on social media jointly influence perceived norms and behavioral intentions remains underexplored. This experimental study (N = 500) examined the separate and combined effects of descriptive and injunctive norm cues embedded in social media videos and comments on perceived norms and intentions to use aggressive communication in traffic-related interpersonal violence, which is a growing global health concern. We then examined prior social exposure as a boundary cond

BACKGROUND: Social behaviour plays a key role in mental health and wellbeing, and developing greater understanding of mechanisms underlying social interaction-particularly social motivation-holds substantial transdiagnostic impact. Common rodent behavioural assays used to assess social behaviour are limited in their assessment of social motivation, whereas the social operant conditioning model can provide unique and valuable insights into social motivation. Further characterisation of common experimental parameters that may influence social motivation within the social operant model, as well a

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) runs in families, but the neurobiological pathways underlying the genetic susceptibility towards SAD are largely unknown. Here, we employed an endophenotype approach, and tested the hypothesis that amygdala hyperreactivity to faces conditioned with a social-evaluative meaning is a candidate SAD endophenotype. We used data from the multiplex, multigenerational Leiden Family Lab study on Social Anxiety Disorder (eight families, n = 105) and investigated amygdala activation during a social-evaluative conditioning paradigm with high ecological validity in the context

Post-weaning social isolation rearing (SI) in rodents elicits various behavioral abnormalities including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder-like behaviors. In order to obtain a better understanding of SI-induced behavioral abnormalities, we herein investigated the effects of SI on social affiliation and conditioned fear memory as well as the neuronal mechanism(s) underlying these effects. Four-week-old male mice were group-housed (GH) or socially isolated for 2-4 weeks before the experiments. The social affiliation test and fear memory conditioning were conducted at the age of 6 and 7 we

BACKGROUND: The impacts of social isolation on diverse health conditions and how it contributes to health risks remain unclear. We aimed to investigate the associations of social isolation with 59 health conditions among older adults.
METHODS: Participants from the UK Biobank without baseline diagnosis of the included diseases were selected. Social isolation was assessed with three questions. The 59 health conditions included all-cause mortality, 5 cause-specific mortalities, and 53 diseases. We used an instrumental variable from multivariable common factor GWAS in Mendelian randomization (MR
