Forgiveness Dynamics in Recovery: The Interplay of Offender Type, Social Desirability, and Psychological Well-Being Among Men in Recovery from Addiction in Israel.

Forgiveness is increasingly recognized as a therapeutic resource in addiction recovery, yet its dynamics within family contexts remain complex. This cross-sectional study examined forgiveness among 79 men in recovery in a therapeutic community in Israel, comparing those who identified a family member versus a non-family member as the offender, and exploring associations with social desirability and psychological well-being. The response rate was 97.5%. Participants offended by family member reported significantly higher overall, affective, and behavioral forgiveness, as well as higher social d

Positive Reframing of Psychosis Risk Reduces Social Stigma and Desire for Social Distance Among Adolescents: Moderating Roles of Prodromal Experiences, Sex, and Culture.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Communication about the at-risk mental state may shape not only clinical understanding but also peer-directed social evaluations. Prior work from our group has shown that positively reframing psychosis-risk feedback reduces perceived emotional harm and clinician stigma. The present study examined whether positive reframing influences adolescents' peer-directed social stigma and desire for social distance toward an at-risk youth, and whether these effects are moderated by adolescents' own distressing prodromal experiences, sex, and cultural background. METHODS: One hundred

Enacting desired change in the present: Explaining prefigurative collective action during Chile's 2019 social explosion.

Many contemporary movements confront existing power structures while experimenting with alternative social relations-a dynamic often discussed as prefigurative politics. Yet social psychology has prioritized explaining why people participate over examining what unfolds through collective action. This study examines how 16 participants made sense of their participation in Chile's 2019 social explosion. Using reflexive thematic analysis of in-depth interviews, informed by the elaborated social identity model, we examine whether aspects of their involvement were understood in prefigurative terms

Examining Change in Self-Reported Gambling Measures Over Time as Related to Socially Desirable Responding Bias.

Socially desirable responding is a response bias that can affect the accuracy of self-reports. It is especially likely when questions address sensitive topics, such as gambling attitudes, problems and behaviours. A sample of 321 participants were recruited from Amazon's mTurk crowdsourcing platform for a randomized controlled trial investigating an online gambling intervention. Data from this study was used to examine the influence of socially desirable responding on gambling self-report measures over time. At baseline, self-deception (SD), a factor of socially desirable responding, was signif

Less Evaluative Measures of Personality in Job Applicant Contexts: The Effect on Socially Desirable Responding and Criterion Validity.

Researchers have long sought to mitigate the detrimental effects of socially desirable responding on personality assessments in high-stakes contexts. This study investigated the effect of reducing the social desirability of personality items on response distortion and criterion validity in a job applicant context. Using a 2 × 2 repeated measures design, participants (n = 584) completed standard (International Personality Item Pool) and less evaluative (Less Evaluative Five Factor Inventory) measures of Big Five personality in a low-stakes context and then several weeks later in a simulated job

[Investigation of childhood neuropsychiatric disorders in adults often desirable. Functional disabilities can result in social maladjustment].

So-called child neuropsychiatric disorders (ADHD/DAMP, autism spectrum disorders, Tourette's syndrome) are being recognized with increasing frequency in child and adolescent psychiatry. Through follow-up studies, case reports and autobiographical accounts it has become evident that these disorders often persist into adulthood, and the need for diagnostic evaluation of adults is increasing. The Neuropsychiatric Diagnostic Team for Adults in Lund, Sweden, was established in 1998 to meet this need. 228 adults, mostly 18-30 years old, have completed the diagnostic process, resulting in one of the

Socially desirable responding and self-reported HIV infection risk behaviors among intravenous drug users.

This study examined the extent to which self-report of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) risk behaviors might depend upon socially desirable response tendencies, and whether socially desirable responding might serve as a confounding variable in the study of risk behaviors and HIV serostatus. The subjects were 2885 intravenous drug users participating in the ALIVE study in Baltimore, Maryland. Participants completed an interview and were tested for HIV serostatus. The interview covered HIV risk behaviors, and included established scales to measure 'self-deception' and 'impression management',

Beyond Social Desirability Bias: Investigating Inconsistencies in Self-Reported HIV Testing and Treatment Behaviors Among HIV-Positive Adults in North West Province, South Africa.

This mixed-methods study used qualitative interviews to explore discrepancies between self-reported HIV care and treatment-related behaviors and the presence of antiretroviral medications (ARVs) in a population-based survey in South Africa. ARV analytes were identified among 18% of those reporting HIV-negative status and 18% of those reporting not being on ART. Among participants reporting diagnosis over a year prior, 19% reported multiple HIV tests in the past year. Qualitative results indicated that participant misunderstandings about their care and treatment played a substantial role in rep

Sleep Health Education to Promote Public Health: Attitudes and Desired Learning Goals among Social Work Students.

Social workers are often front line behavioral health providers for underserved populations, many of whom experience sleep disturbances. Inadequate sleep presents a public health challenge and is associated with many adverse physical health and mental health consequences. Social workers are uniquely positioned to promote sleep health among individuals experiencing health inequities. However, sleep is rarely included as part of the curricula in social work programs in the U.S. We conducted qualitative formative research to investigate social work students' perceptions of sleep education and des

Changes in Sexual Desire and Behaviors among UK Young Adults During Social Lockdown Due to COVID-19.

This study examined self-reported changes in young adults' sexual desire and behaviors during the most significant social restrictions imposed to deal with COVID-19. Drawing on a survey of 565 British adults aged 18-32 collected at the peak of social lockdown restrictions, we document an overall decrease in sexual behaviors consistent with abiding by social restrictions. We found that the levels of sexual desire reported by women (but not men) decreased compared with reports of pre-lockdown levels. Participants in serious relationships reported more increases in sexual activity than people who

[Desire for early retirement and therapy of chronic back pain: relevance of social medical variables for outpatient psychotherapeutic treatment].

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the influence of patients' desire for early retirement on the success of an outpatient cognitive behavioural treatment (CBT) in patients with chronic back pain. Previous studies have shown that the desire for early retirement and social compensation had a negative influence on therapy outcome, e.g. pain intensity and pain disability. This study was conducted to reassess whether these results can be replicated in an outpatient CBT setting. METHOD: Questionnaires assessing pain-related variables were issued to a total of 116 patients at the beginning, at the

Better to keep a negative self-perception than ask for feedback? - How depressive symptoms are associated with the desire for social feedback.

BACKGROUND: We investigated whether depressive symptom severity is associated with incongruence between how people perceive themselves (self-perception) and how they expect others to perceive them (meta-perception). We also examined whether these discrepancies explain feedback-seeking. We hypothesized that elevated depressive symptoms are related to low preference for positive and self-incongruent feedback and high preference for negative and self-congruent feedback. METHOD: In study 1 (N = 149), we presented 20 positive and 20 negative traits. For each trait, participants rated their self- a

Impairments in life satisfaction in infertility: Associations with perceived stress, affectivity, partnership quality, social support and the desire to have a child.

Between 10% and 15% of couples in western society are affected by infertility. As a major source of psychological distress, infertility may be accompanied by a substantial decline in well-being, and mental symptoms including those of depression and anxiety. This study aimed to quantify impairments in life satisfaction in infertile couples and to identify psychosocial variables moderating these impairments. For this purpose, 228 infertile couples completed the Life Satisfaction Questionnaire (LSQ), Perceived Stress Questionnaire (PSQ), Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), Penn State W

One Simple Question Predicts Well-Being in Radiation Therapy: The Role of Desire for Psychological Intervention and Perceived Social Support.

Radiation therapy (RT) is a critical part of cancer treatment often accompanied by heightened anxiety, depression, and reduced life satisfaction. Although psycho-oncological (PO) interventions and social support can alleviate distress, it is unclear whether patients' desire for PO intervention reflects temporary or ongoing distress and whether all patients benefit from social support or only those seeking help. In this study we examined whether the desire for PO intervention during the start of RT predicted anxiety, depression, and life satisfaction at the start and end of RT and whether perce

Chewing Revenge or Becoming Socially Desirable? Anger Rumination in Refugees and Immigrants Experiencing Racial Hostility: Latin-Americans in Spain.

This paper explores how real scenarios of racial hostility and discrimination trigger anger rumination tendencies in refugees, asylum seekers and immigrants (hereafter RASI). Undergoing discrimination often leads to the development of negative thoughts and behaviors, and to a loss of meaning and self-worth. This could make young RASI particularly vulnerable to being recruited and exploited by extremist groups as they search for identity. We developed a picture-elicitation instrument (the PEI) to provide professionals with a tool that could identify groups of RASI according to their reactions t

Estimated prevalence of mental disorders and the desire for social distance--results from population surveys in two large German cities.

The study is focused on two research questions: What are the public's estimates of the prevalence of depression, schizophrenia, bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa? What is the relationship between the estimated prevalence of the mental disorders and the public's desire for social distance? Analyses are based on a telephone survey in two large German cities (Hamburg and Munich, N=2014, response rate 51%). Vignettes with typical signs and symptoms suggestive of a depression, schizophrenia, bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa were presented. Respondents were asked about the lifetime prevalence

Association between desire thinking and problematic social media use among a sample of Lebanese adults: The indirect effect of suppression and impulsivity.

BACKGROUND: Desire thinking, impulsivity and suppression are psychological variables that are intricately related to behavioral addictions. Bearing in mind the scarcity of data on desire thinking, impulsivity, thought suppression and pathological social media use in developing countries such as Lebanon, with the existing literature suggesting a heightened mental health burden associated with this problematic social media use, it becomes all the more important to elucidate their relationship. Our study aims at investigating the association between desire thinking and problematic social media us

Nonverbal Response Cards Reduce Socially Desirable Reporting of Violence Among Adolescents in Rural Burkina Faso: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

PURPOSE: Accurate measures of violence are difficult to obtain from self-reported data because of stigmatization and social undesirability of the topic. Most methods that attempt to reduce such biases require literacy and either remove the benefits of interviewer guidance or do not give individual-level results. We tested a low-tech nonverbal response card that avoids revealing interviewees' responses to interviewers while retaining interviewer support among adolescents in communities with very low educational attainment. METHODS: As part of a broader health questionnaire, we asked a sample o

Attitudes toward mental illness: recognition, desired social distance, expected burden and negative influence on mental health among Turkish freshmen.

Attitudes toward three types of disorders and a normal subject portrayed in vignettes were assessed among university students. The variables assessed were: perception of mental illness in the vignettes; desired social distance; emotional and physical burden expected; and expected negative influence on one's mental health from association with the type of persons portrayed in the vignettes. Analysis revealed that, in terms of variables assessed, the most "negative" ratings were recorded for the paranoid schizophrenic case and the most "positive" recorded for the normal subject.
