Social recognition constitutes the basis of social life. In male mice and rats, social recognition is known to be governed by the neuropeptide oxytocin (OT) through its action on OT receptors (OTRs) in the medial amygdala. In female rats and mice, which have sociosexual behaviors controlling substantial investment in reproduction, an important role for OT in sociosexual behaviors has also been shown. However, the site in the female brain for OT action on social recognition is still unknown. Here we used a customized, controlled release system of biodegradable polymeric microparticles to delive

BACKGROUND: Skin damage is a trait of economic and welfare importance that results from social interactions between animals. These interactions may produce wound signs on the gilt's skin as a result of damage behavior (i.e., fighting), biting syndromes (i.e., tail, vulva, or ear biting), and swine inflammation and necrosis syndrome. Although current selection for traits that are affected by social interactions primarily focuses on improving direct genetic effects, combined selection on direct and social genetic effects could increase genetic gain and avoid a negative response to selection in c

OBJECTIVE: Despite substantial progress in identifying genomic variation associated with major depression, the mechanisms by which genomic and environmental factors jointly influence depression risk remain unclear. Genomically conferred sensitivity to the social environment may be one mechanism linking genomic variation and depressive symptoms. The authors assessed whether social support affects the likelihood of depression development differently across the spectrum of genomic risk in two samples that experienced substantial life stress: 1,011 first-year training physicians (interns) in the I

From the 1920s to the 1950s, California sterilized approximately 20,000 people in state homes and hospitals based on a eugenic law that authorized medical superintendents to perform reproductive surgeries on patients deemed unfit and "suffering from a mental affliction likely to be inherited." Working with a unique resource - a dataset created from 19,000 sterilization recommendations - my team and I have reconstructed patterns and experiences of institutionalization of sterilizations. This article presents several of our important initial findings related to ethnic and gender bias in steriliz

Science blogs, Twitter commentary, and comments on journal websites represent an immediate response to journal articles, and may help in identifying relevant publications. However, the use of these media for establishing paper impact is not well studied. Using Wikipedia as a proxy for other social media, we explore the correlation between inclusion of a journal article in Wikipedia, and article impact as measured by citation count. We start by cataloging features of PubMed articles cited in Wikipedia. We find that Wikipedia pages referencing the most journal articles are about disorders and di

BACKGROUND: Reduced social connectedness and impaired social functioning are observed across diverse social, psychiatric, and neurodevelopmental phenotypes, but their underlying multivariate genetic architecture remains unclear.
METHODS: We integrated GWAS summary statistics for Feeling lonely, social deprivation, major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and autism spectrum disorder using Genomic SEM to characterize their shared genetic structure. A common-factor GWAS was subsequently performed to identify variants associated with the shared genetic component. Genome-wide sign

PURPOSE: Genetic results are important for both patients and their biological relatives. However, cascade screening (CS) uptake is low, especially when testing occurs through research programs and not clinical care. Ethical guidance is needed for CS implementation when individuals receive clinical genetic results through research.
METHODS: We conducted focus groups with 3 groups of individuals in the Clinical Sequencing Evidence-Generating Research Consortium: clinicians, patient representatives, and scholars of the ethical, legal, and social implications of genomics. We used inductive themat

Intraspecific variability in social organization is common, yet the underlying causes are rarely known. In the fire ant Solenopsis invicta, the existence of two divergent forms of social organization is under the control of a single Mendelian genomic element marked by two variants of an odorant-binding protein gene. Here we characterize the genomic region responsible for this important social polymorphism, and show that it is part of a pair of heteromorphic chromosomes that have many of the key properties of sex chromosomes. The two variants, hereafter referred to as the social B and social b

Understanding the expression of multiple behaviorally and morphologically distinct phenotypes from a single genome represents a fundamental topic in evolutionary biology. Central to the complication of expressing phenotypes, which may differ in their optima, is the sharing of largely the same genome, which is predicted to manifest in conflict at the genomic level. This is particularly true for social insects where molecular mechanisms, such as differential gene expression, contribute to observed phenotypic differences between reproductive and nonreproductive morphs. In comparison, other mechan

Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder that affects one in 100 people worldwide, and is characterized by distorted thoughts and perceptions. Several animal models have been developed, based primarily on the study of the mechanism of action of antipsychotics. In this paper we present a number of classic behavioral tests (memory, social interaction, and pre-pulse inhibition) associated with schizophrenia in young and adult animals with NLVH. The animal model of NLVH is a heuristic model that discriminates, by behavioral testing, the phenotype "schizophrenia-like" from other behavioral paradi

Astrocytes are key partners for neurons and can impact diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), as they exhibit multiple reactive changes. Recent single cell/nucleus genomics analyses evidence astrocyte subpopulations coexisting in normal and AD brains. However, the signaling cascades controlling them, their functional characteristics and roles in AD are still unknown. Here, thanks to astrocyte-specific reporters for STAT3 and NF-kB signaling pathways, two regulators of astrocyte reactivity, we report the presence of three astrocyte subpopulations defined by their signaling activity, in the

This paper reports and discusses 'genomic designation' as a way of classifying people. In genomic designation the object of biomedical analysis--and the concomitant medical category that is subject to scientific, clinical, and social action--is delineated on a genomic basis, while the phenotype is decentralized and tabulated post factum. Unlike prominent sociological concepts such as biosociality or geneticization, where genetic proclivities for or explanations of phenotypic categories affect social processes, genomic designation treats characteristics of the genome as the essential referent o

BACKGROUND: The shift from solitary to social behavior is one of the major evolutionary transitions. Primitively eusocial bumblebees are uniquely placed to illuminate the evolution of highly eusocial insect societies. Bumblebees are also invaluable natural and agricultural pollinators, and there is widespread concern over recent population declines in some species. High-quality genomic data will inform key aspects of bumblebee biology, including susceptibility to implicated population viability threats.
RESULTS: We report the high quality draft genome sequences of Bombus terrestris and Bombus

BACKGROUND: Social connections are crucial to human health and well-being. Previous research on molecular mechanisms in health has focused primarily on the individual-level perception of social connections (e.g., loneliness). This study adopted socio-centric social network analysis that includes all social ties from the entire population of interest to examine the group-level social connections and their association with a molecular genomic measure of health.
METHODS: Using socio-centric (global) social network data from an entire village in Korea, we investigated how social network character

The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development has conducted a series of vision workshops to set an ambitious but tenable broad agenda, transcending traditional organizational and disciplinary boundaries. This presentation sets forth a vision regarding how the aspects of a woman's reproductive lifespan are interrelated, likely starting from childhood all the way to the later reproductive years. As a woman propagates, this circular interaction is then transmitted to the next generation. We need an understanding of the clinical processes, the time course, the natural history, and d

In global health research and genomics research specifically, community engagement has gained prominence in enhancing ethical conduct, particularly in managing the risk of stigmatization, but there is minimal scientific evidence on how to do this effectively. This article reports on community engagement evaluation strategies in two African genomics studies: the Stigma in African Genomics Research study and the Genomics of Schizophrenia in South African Xhosa People (SAX) study. Within the Stigma in African Genomics Research study, a self-report rating scale and open-ended questions were used t

Estrogens are critical in driving sex-typical social behaviours that are ethologically relevant in mammals. This is due to both production of local estrogens and signaling by these ligands, particularly in an interconnected set of nuclei called the social behavioural network (SBN). The SBN is a sexually dimorphic network studied predominantly in rodents that is thought to underlie the display of social behaviour in mammals. Signalling by the predominant endogenous estrogen, 17β-estradiol, can be either via the classical genomic or non-classical rapid pathway. In the classical genomic pathway,

During the last half of the 20th century, Nutrition has evolved in a quick way based on the knowledge of both basic sciences as Biochemistry and Physiology and applied sciences as Epidemiology and Public Health. In that period the nutritional requirements for different population groups grouped by sex, age and physiological conditions have been established. However, in spite of the enormous knowledge in food and nutritional sciences, malnutrition by nutrient deficiencies (protein-energy undernutrition and micronutrient deficiencies) and by excess of nutrient intake (overweight and obesity) con

PURPOSE: Recurrent 16p11.2 duplications produce a wide range of clinical outcomes with varying effects on cognition and social functioning. Family-based studies of copy number variants (CNVs) have revealed significant contributions of genomic background on variable expressivity. In this study, we measured the phenotypic effect of 16p11.2 duplications and quantified the modulating effect of familial background on cognitive and social outcomes.
METHODS: Genomic and clinical data were ascertained from 41 probands with a 16p11.2 duplication and their first-degree relatives. Paired comparisons wer
