The relative importance of social information use for population abundance in group-living and non-grouping prey.

Predator-prey relationships are fundamental components of ecosystem functioning, within which the spatial consequences of prey social organization can alter predation rates. Group-living (GL) species are known to exploit inadvertent social information (ISI) that facilitates population persistence under predation risk. Still, the extent to which non-grouping (NG) prey can benefit from similar processes is unknown. Here we built an individual-based model to explore and compare the population-level consequences of ISI use in GL and NG prey. We differentiated between GL and NG prey only by the pre

Creative social prescribing groups during lockdown: a photo-elicitation evaluation of group users' experiences.

Previous research has examined the experiences of voluntary, community, and social enterprise (VCSE) group providers, but the voices of group users, especially those recovering from, or living with SMI, are sparse. This study addresses that gap, using the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown as a natural experiment to gain insights into the experiences of individuals participating in VCSE-run creative and social groups, and comparing this with the experiences of providers. We conducted photo-elicitation focus groups to explore group members' perspectives. Lockdown highlighted to group members what they

Social bonds and helping dynamics promote cooperation in nested group populations.

Most studies on the evolution of cooperation focus on single-group settings, whereas real-world interactions often occur within nested group structures and are shaped by pre-existing social relationships. The coexistence of cross-level public-goods allocation, dynamically evolving social bonds, and heterogeneous helping responses creates multiple feedback channels, making the stability of cooperation dependent on both group structure and relationship dynamics. To address these limitations, this study develops a two-stage game model that incorporates social bonds to characterize relationship st

Neural Bases of Collective Social Behavior and Group Interactions across Species.

Collective group behavior is a key form of social interaction observed across animal species, including humans. These collective behaviors, such as flocking and herding, emerge from individual actions within complex group dynamics and can often lead to group phenomena such as social norms and trends. By investigating different species-insects, fish, birds, and mammals-ongoing efforts have revealed both shared and species-specific neural processes involved in collective social dynamics. Newly evolving technologies, such as motion tracking and behavioral sequencing, have enabled the detailed mea

Intensive group-based CBT for child social phobia: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Although CBT has proven efficacious in the treatment of child social phobia (SP), most children do not present for treatment and child SP may be less responsive to treatment than other anxiety disorders. Intensive, group-based, SP-specific CBT may improve the efficacy of, and access to, treatment for child SP. The aim of this study was to provide a preliminary examination of such a program. METHOD: Forty Australian children aged 7-12 years (15 male and 25 female) were allocated into treatment and waitlist groups. Clinical interviews to determine diagnostic status were conducted pri

Social interaction experiences of adults with Moebius Syndrome: a focus group.

This focus group study explored the social interaction experiences and strategies of 12 adults with Moebius Syndrome, a rare congenital condition characterized by facial paralysis. Content analysis revealed five themes of social functioning: social engagement/disengagement; resilience/sensitivity; social support/stigma; being understood/misunderstood; and public awareness/lack of awareness of Moebius Syndrome. Participants used compensatory expressive strategies such as vocal tone, gestures, and humor. The combination of being unable to express oneself with the face, having a facial difference

A brief group cognitive-behavioral intervention for social phobia in childhood.

Twenty-three preadolescent children (ages 8-11) meeting criteria for social phobia were randomly assigned to either a 3-week cognitive-behavioral group intervention or a wait-list control group. The intervention consisted of psychoeducation, cognitive strategies, and behavioral exposure. Outcome measures included diagnostic interview as well as parent and child report measures of anxiety and depression. Improvements were observed at posttest, with results stronger for parent report and interviewer ratings than for child self-report. At 3-week follow-up, children receiving the intervention demo

[Challenges, prevention, and countermeasures for social withdrawal (hikikomori) by age group].

The term "hikikomori" was recognized by society between 1980 and 2000, when the term "NEET" also appeared and it was regarded as a problem of irresponsible youth. However, accumulation of surveys and research both in Japan and abroad, including those conducted by the Cabinet Office, has revealed that the reasons behind social withdrawal are not only limited to mental illness. There are many people who exhibit withdrawal because they are unable to establish relationships with the community and other people owing to various factors such as social systems, attachment formation, family background,

Intensive cognitive behavioural group treatment for social phobia: a pilot study.

The aim of this pilot study was to examine the effectiveness of an intensive form of cognitive behavioural group treatment practised routinely in a psychiatric clinic. A total of 27 outpatients with social phobia of long duration were assigned to a 41-hour treatment administered over 2 periods of 3.5 and 4.5 days, 1 week apart. Four groups, each comprising 6-8 patients, participated in the study. All except 1 patient (26/27) completed the treatment and 20 patients participated in all follow-up sessions after 3, 6 and 12 months. Treatment significantly reduced fear and avoidance of social inter

Application of social identity theory in group therapy with stigmatized adults.

Social identity theory was applied in group therapy for adults with mild mental retardation. Social identity theory suggests that social group membership, also called collective identity, has an impact on self-esteem. Individuals will try to maintain self-esteem by viewing their social groups positively. This may not be possible for individuals who are members of a stigmatized group. However, it may be possible to enhance self-esteem by broadening one's awareness of collective identity. Furthermore, being able to positively view other individuals who are co-members of one's own stigmatized gro

The role of appropriate social group size and composition on animal welfare.

Billions of animals worldwide live in captivity across diverse settings, with the vast majority being inherently social species whose welfare fundamentally depends on appropriate social interactions with conspecifics. This review examines the critical role of social environments in captive animal welfare across laboratory, zoo, farm, and companion animal contexts. We first demonstrate how inappropriate group sizes and compositions negatively impacts animal welfare through multiple pathways: impaired physical health and cognitive development, compromised emotional states and altered behavioural

Key experiences of primary social groups in Unspecified Kidney Donation.

BACKGROUND: The role of family members in directed kidney donation is well documented in the literature from both a physiological and psychosocial perspective. The experiences of families, or primary social groups (PSGs), where one member considers donating a kidney via unspecified altruistic kidney donation route (UKD) is poorly understood. This is pertinent as lack of family support has been identified as a potential contributor to donation withdrawal. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore the relevant psychosocial factors underpinning completed and uncompleted donations. DESIGN: A quali

Social and behavioral problems among five gambling severity groups.

Gambling has been associated with various social and behavioral problems, but previous analyses have been limited by sample bias regarding gambling symptom severity range and the role of antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). This study utilized a nationally representative data set and examined various characteristics of behavioral problems and ASPD among five gambling severity groups. Participants were 42,038 individuals who took part in the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC) and provided information on social and behavioral problems, ASPD, and gambling.

Social groups and prevention of preterm births in a population of twin mothers.

Prenatal care was equally distributed to all twin pregnant women of the district of Haut de Seine in France in 1989-91, without differences by socio-economic level. No difference in rates of preterm births and very early preterm births (26-31 weeks) was measured by socioeconomic level among twin pregnancies.

A study of the work of a medical social worker in a group medical practice.

An exploratory study was made to demonstrate the role, the work and the relationships of a full-time medical social worker in a group medical practice. Patients were seen on referral only, and a schedule for interview was developed for purposes of categorizing areas of social dysfunction. The following areas of dysfunction were studied: accommodation, job, social activities, family problems and medical diagnosis and/or treatment. A profile emerged of the patients referred as compared to patients in the practice as a whole. The "social sickness" in patients was more likely to exist between the

The influence of social indices on oral health and oral health behaviour in a group of Flemish socially deprived adolescents.

AIM: To investigate the impact of social indices on oral health and oral health behaviour in socially deprived adolescents and young adults in Flanders. METHOD: The study design was cross-sectional and included 68 subjects aged 12 to 26, who called for help by "Habbekrats", a non-profit organisation rendering assistance to adolescents and young adults living on the fringes of our society. The clinical oral examination was performed using criteria based on the diagnostic criteria for caries prevalence surveys published by BASCD. Information on parental occupational level, educational level, li

Frontal neurons driving competitive behaviour and ecology of social groups.

Competitive interactions have a vital role in the ecology of most animal species1-3 and powerfully influence the behaviour of groups4,5. To succeed, individuals must exert effort based on not only the resources available but also the social rank and behaviour of other group members2,6,7. The single-cellular mechanisms that precisely drive competitive interactions or the behaviour of social groups, however, remain poorly understood. Here we developed a naturalistic group paradigm in which large cohorts of mice competitively foraged for food as we wirelessly tracked neuronal activities across th

Examination of the known-groups validity of the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale.

We examined the known-groups validity of the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS) by comparing the scores of patients with social anxiety disorder (n=46), generalized anxiety disorder plus an additional diagnosis of social anxiety disorder (n=15), generalized anxiety disorder without social anxiety disorder (n=12), and nonanxious controls (n=34). The LSAS total score discriminated significantly among all pairs of groups. Similar analyses were conducted on the original LSAS subscales and additional subscales derived from the factor-analytic work of Safren et al. [1999]. Original subscales show

Social support as a predictor of response to group therapy for complicated grief.

This study investigated the effect of perceived social support on the outcome of group therapy for patients who experienced complicated grief following a variety of death losses. One hundred and seven psychiatric outpatients, who received either interpretive or supportive group therapy, rated their perceptions of social support from three sources (family, friends, and a special person) prior to treatment onset. For patients in both forms of therapy, perceived social support from friends was directly associated with favorable treatment outcome. In contrast, perceived social support from family
