Gaze-speech coordination during social interaction in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) can affect social interaction and communication as well as motor and cognitive processes. Speech is affected in PD, as is the control of voluntary eye movements which are thought to play an important role in 'turn taking' in conversation. AIMS: This study aimed to measure eye movements during spoken conversation in PD to assess whether differences in patterns of eye gaze are linked to disrupted turn taking and impaired communication efficiency. METHODS & PROCEDURE: Eleven participants with mild PD and 14 controls completed a two-player guessing game. Duri

Social interaction and the thermogenic response of chicken hatchlings.

The aggregation of two or more individuals of the same species (huddling) is common in mammals and birds, especially in the cold. The physical contact reduces the weight-specific body surface exposed to the environment, thus lowering heat loss and the thermogenic needs. This study investigated the possibility that the mere presence of a conspecific, in absence of physical contact, may by itself influence metabolic rate during cold. The oxygen consumption (Vo2) of pairs of chicken hatchlings was measured when the hatchlings were in isolation (individuals), together in the respirometer but kept

Pten regulates neuronal arborization and social interaction in mice.

CNS deletion of Pten in the mouse has revealed its roles in controlling cell size and number, thus providing compelling etiology for macrocephaly and Lhermitte-Duclos disease. PTEN mutations in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have also been reported, although a causal link between PTEN and ASD remains unclear. In the present study, we deleted Pten in limited differentiated neuronal populations in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus of mice. Resulting mutant mice showed abnormal social interaction and exaggerated responses to sensory stimuli. We observed macrocephaly and neuron

SOC-DGL: Social Interaction Behavior Inspired Dual Graph Learning Framework for Drug-Target Interaction Identification.

The identification of drug-target interactions (DTI) is critical for drug discovery and repositioning, as it reveals potential therapeutic uses of existing drugs, accelerating development and reducing costs. However, most existing models focus only on direct similarity in homogeneous graphs, failing to exploit the rich similarity in heterogeneous graphs. To address this gap, inspired by real-world social interaction behaviors, we propose SOC-DGL, which comprises two specialized modules: the Affinity-Driven Graph Learning (ADGL) module, learning global similarity through an affinity-enhanced dr

A cross-syndrome approach to the social phenotype of neurodevelopmental disorders: Focusing on social vulnerability and social interaction style.

BACKGROUND: Following Annette Karmiloff-Smith's approach to cognitive research, this study applied a cross-syndrome approach to the social phenotype, focusing on social vulnerability (SV) and the factors that contribute to it. AIMS: To (i) identify syndrome-specific differences in SV across four neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD) groups, (ii) determine the contribution of intellectual disability (ID), age or gender to SV, and (iii) explore its relationship with social interaction style (SIS). METHODS AND PROCEDURES: 262 parents of children: Autism (n = 29), Williams syndrome (n = 29), Attenti

Immersive Social Interaction Assay (ISIA) for Studying Voluntary and Long-Term Social Behavior in Mice.

Social behavior is highly dynamic and context-dependent, yet many commonly used rodent social assays rely on short testing periods and simplified measures of proximity or investigation. Here, we present a detailed protocol for constructing and using the immersive social interaction assay (ISIA), a behavioral paradigm designed to capture prolonged, voluntary social interactions in freely moving mice. The ISIA apparatus consists of two modified standard rodent home-cage chambers connected by a 3D-printed tube with an adjustable inner diameter. This design enables flexible experimental control: a

Hypocretin/orexin neurons encode social discrimination and exhibit a sex-dependent necessity for social interaction.

The hypothalamus plays a crucial role in the modulation of social behavior by encoding internal states. The hypothalamic hypocretin/orexin neurons, initially identified as regulators of sleep and appetite, are important for emotional and motivated behaviors. However, their role in social behavior remains unclear. Using fiber photometry and behavioral analysis, we show here that hypocretin neurons differentially encode social discrimination based on the nature of social encounters. The optogenetic inhibition of hypocretin neuron activity or blocking of hcrt-1 receptors reduces the amount of tim

Processing of increased frequency of social interaction in social anxiety disorder and borderline personality disorder.

We investigated how patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) and patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) process an increase in the frequency of social interaction. We used an EEG-compatible version of the online ball-tossing game Cyberball to induce an increase in the frequency of social interaction. In the first condition, each player received the ball equally often (inclusion: 33% ball reception). In the following condition, the frequency of the ball reception was increased (overinclusion: 45% ball reception). The main outcome variable was the event-related potential P2, an i

Disruption of PAK3 Signaling in Social Interaction Induced cFos Positive Cells Impairs Social Recognition Memory.

P21-activated kinase 3 (PAK3) gene mutations are linked to several neurodevelopmental disorders, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we used a tetracycline-inducible system to control the expression of a mutant PAK3 (mPAK3) protein in immediate early gene, namely cFos, positive cells to disrupt PAK signaling, specifically in cells activated by social interaction in transgenic mice. We show that the expression of mPAK3-GFP proteins was in cFos-expressing excitatory and inhibitory neurons in various brain regions, such as the cortex and hippocampus, commonly activated du

Multi-user upper limb rehabilitation training system integrating social interaction.

COVID-19 causes persistent symptoms such as weakness and myasthenia in most patients. Due to the cross-infection of COVID-19, the traditional face-to-face rehabilitation services are risky for the elderly. To ensure that the elderly in urgent need of rehabilitation services receive training while minimizing the disturbance of the COVID-19 pandemic on their social activities. We have improved the existing virtual upper limb training system, and added a social factor to the system. Seniors with upper limb rehabilitation needs can use the system to compete or collaborate with others for training.

Cortico-Cerebellar neurodynamics during social interaction in Autism Spectrum Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Exploring neural network dynamics during social interaction could help to identify biomarkers of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). A cerebellar involvement in autism has long been suspected and recent methodological advances now enable studying cerebellar functioning in a naturalistic setting. Here, we investigated the electrophysiological activity of the cerebro-cerebellar network during real-time social interaction in ASD. We focused our analysis on theta oscillations (3-8 Hz), which have been associated with large-scale coordination of distant brain areas and might contribute to

The human dynamic clamp as a paradigm for social interaction.

Social neuroscience has called for new experimental paradigms aimed toward real-time interactions. A distinctive feature of interactions is mutual information exchange: One member of a pair changes in response to the other while simultaneously producing actions that alter the other. Combining mathematical and neurophysiological methods, we introduce a paradigm called the human dynamic clamp (HDC), to directly manipulate the interaction or coupling between a human and a surrogate constructed to behave like a human. Inspired by the dynamic clamp used so productively in cellular neuroscience, the

The Drosophila DmGluRA is required for social interaction and memory.

Metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) have well-established roles in cognition and social behavior in mammals. Whether or not these roles have been conserved throughout evolution from invertebrate species is less clear. Mammals have eight mGluRs whereas Drosophila has a single DmGluRA, which has both Gi and Gq coupled signaling activity. We have utilized Drosophila to examine the role of DmGluRA in social behavior and various phases of memory. We have found that flies that are homozygous or heterozygous for loss of function mutations of DmGluRA have impaired social behavior in male Drosoph

Social interaction anxiety and the discounting of positive interpersonal events.

BACKGROUND: Recent research has indicated that individuals with social interaction anxiety make biased interpretations of positive social interactions, with greater general apprehension in response to such events and more negative predictions about the future. There has also been some preliminary evidence for a second facet of interpretation bias, namely a failure to accept others' positive reactions at face value, but this has so far not been adequately studied. METHOD: The present study developed a new measure of this "discounting" dimension and utilized a nonclinical sample of undergraduat

Genetic and gene-environment interaction effects on preschoolers' social behaviors.

This study examined effects from a specific dopamine receptor gene (DRD4), environmental influences from parents and peers, and the interaction between them, on aggressive and prosocial behaviors of preschoolers. Children were classified as DRD4-L (n = 27) if they had at least one DRD4 allele with six to eight repeats and as DRD4-S (n = 35) if not. Parent-child interactions were coded when children were 3-4 years old. Peer interaction data and parent questionnaires were collected at age 5. DRD4-L children shared less with each other and parents were less sensitive during parent-twin triadic in

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia, emotion, and emotion regulation during social interaction.

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) figures prominently in emotional responding, but its exact role remains unclear. The present study tests two hypotheses: (1) Between-person differences in resting RSA are related to emotional reactivity, and (2) within-person changes in RSA are related to regulatory efforts. Pairs of women watched an upsetting film and discussed it. One woman in each of the experimental dyads was asked to either suppress or to reappraise during the conversation. Their partners and both members of the control dyads conversed naturally. Between-person differences in resting RSA

Trait hostility and ambulatory cardiovascular activity: responses to social interaction.

This study examined trait hostility and social interaction in relation to ambulatory cardiovascular activity in 40 male and 39 female undergraduates. Participants wore an ambulatory blood pressure monitor and completed diary entries while engaged in everyday activities. Diary reports indicating that participants had been talking were used to identify cardiovascular readings taken during social interaction. Interaction effects for overall diastolic blood pressure and heart rate levels indicated that hostility was positively associated with these variables in men only. In addition, hostility was

Cardiovascular correlates of type A behavior components during social interaction.

This study examined the cardiovascular (CV) correlates of the primary Type A behavior components during social interactions. Brief dialogues were created to role-play (RP) stereotypic Type A and Type B ways of responding to three common social situations designed to elicit hostility (H), time-urgency (T), and competition (C). Situations and dialogues were validated by independent raters. Thirty undergraduate students were identified as Type A and 30 as Type B, with 15 males and 15 females in each group. The Anterior BNST Is Required for Novelty-Driven Social Interaction.

Social novelty preference-the tendency to interact more with unfamiliar than familiar conspecifics-is conserved across species and disrupted in disorders such as autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, and social anxiety. While the hippocampus and related circuits are known to encode social recognition memory, the mechanisms that translate familiarity signals into behavioral differences remain unclear. Here, we show that male mice exhibit a robust preference for engaging with unfamiliar over familiar conspecifics. Using c-Fos labeling, RNAscope, immunohistochemistry, and fiber photometry, we
