Social disconnectedness, perceived isolation, and health among older adults.

Previous research has identified a wide range of indicators of social isolation that pose health risks, including living alone, having a small social network, infrequent participation in social activities, and feelings of loneliness. However multiple forms of isolation are rarely studied together making it difficult to determine which aspects of isolation are most deleterious for health. Using population-based data from the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project, we combine multiple indicators of social isolation into scales assessing social disconnectedness (e.g., small social networ

Social Isolation or Autistic Homophily: An Exploration of the Social Networks of Autistic College Students.

Our understanding of autistic socialization using social network analysis has focused on autistic children and understanding support systems. The purpose of this study is to examine autistic friendship networks in adulthood without focusing on support systems. We broadly recruited autistic and nonautistic college students (n = 592 students). Students provided ego-network information, including demographics, satisfaction with their social relationships, and perceptions of their friends (e.g. perceived neurotype and demographics). Autistic college students reported similar network structure metr

The role of social isolation in social anxiety disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Social isolation in the context of social anxiety disorder has not been closely examined. This study aimed to describe the role and measurement of social isolation in those with social anxiety disorder. METHOD: A systematic review and meta-analyses were conducted using a prospectively prepared protocol for search strategy, selection criteria, and data extraction. DerSimonian-Laird random effects models were used to calculate pooled estimates of effect. RESULTS: Thirty-four studies, containing 20 formal instruments and four other measures of social isolation, were included. Most

Reducing social isolation in schools: a social network analysis of the HOPE bullying prevention program.

BACKGROUND: School bullying is a public health concern, disproportionately affecting socially isolated students. Peer network position strongly influences vulnerability to victimization. This study examined the effectiveness of a Korean school-based bullying prevention program, HOPE, using social network analysis (SNA). METHODS: From an initial intervention cohort of 275 students, a total of 204 students (112 boys, 92 girls) who completed both pre- and post-intervention measures across nine classrooms were included in the final analysis (attrition rate: 25.8%). In-degree centrality (IDC), defi

Social isolation: an integrated molecular web that disrupts cellular homeostasis.

Social isolation and perceived loneliness are increasingly recognized as serious public health concerns, with extensive evidence linking them to adverse mental and physical health outcomes. Defined, respectively, as the objective lack of social interactions and the subjective feeling of insufficient connection, both conditions are present across various age groups and are associated with elevated risks of cognitive decline and psychiatric disorders. Epidemiological studies have also identified a strong association between chronic social isolation and the development of metabolic syndrome (MetS

Alterations in Nitric Oxide Production After Post-Weaning Social Isolation.

Early-life stressful stimuli, such as social isolation, alter brain neurochemistry and lead to negative behavioral outcomes in adulthood. Isolated animals are deprived of social interactions, which results in impaired brain development. Post-weaning isolation rearing deregulates various brain processes and may affect nitric oxide (NO) signaling. The aim of our study was to determine time-dependent impact of social isolation on behavioral and biochemical parameters in Wistar Kyoto rats. At the age of 21 days, male rats were randomly assigned into four groups reared in isolation or socially for

The Effects of Early Life Social Isolation Are Sex-Specific.

Early life social isolation (ESI) is a severe stress that disrupts brain development, contributing to susceptibility to various stressors and predisposition to neurological and other diseases in later life. In rats, ESI can be modeled by maternal separation of pups, allowing for the study of its after-effects at different stages of animal development. This editorial highlights an article in the current issue of the Journal of Neurochemistry that reports the long-lasting behavioral effects of mild ESI (brief repetitive episodes of pup separation during the third week of postnatal development of

Does Tobacco Smoking Increase Social Isolation? A Mendelian Randomization Study.

In this study, we aimed to investigate the causal effect of smoking on social isolation among older adults in England. Data from older adults of European ancestry who participated in 1 or more waves of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, from wave 1 (2002/2003) to wave 9 (2018/2019), were analyzed (n = 43,687 observations from 7,008 individuals; mean age = 68.50 years). The effect of current smoking on social isolation (ranging from 0 to 5) was estimated by 2-stage least squares regression using a polygenic score (PGS) for smoking cessation as the instrument. A low PGS for smoking cessat

[Association between Social Isolation and Depression among Korean Living Alone].

Single-person households have been continuously increasing in recent times and are reporting more negative mental health outcomes. However, rather than whether single-person households are related to mental health, it is necessary to examine what characteristics of these households are associated with mental health. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the association between social isolation and depression in single-person households and explore the differences across different age groups. We employed the 2017 Community Health Survey and study population were included adults aged 19 and abo

Australian homeless persons' experiences of social connectedness, isolation and loneliness.

Both loneliness and a lack of social integration are associated with serious physical and psychological health issues. One population highly susceptible to social isolation and loneliness are individuals who are homeless, who also experience high rates of mental disorder and relationship breakdown. Despite this, little research has explored how social networks, isolation and loneliness are experienced for those with a history of homelessness. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were used to get a nuanced understanding of how social networks and isolation are experienced and understood by indi

Social isolation and diurnal cortisol patterns in an ageing cohort.

BACKGROUND: Social isolation may operate as a psychosocial stressor which disrupts functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis. METHODS: Using data from the MRC National Survey of Health and Development, we tested whether living alone, not being married and social network size were associated with diurnal cortisol patterns at 60-64 years. We hypothesised that recent onset compared with long-term isolation would be more strongly associated with cortisol awakening response, cortisol decline over the day and evening cortisol. Models were adjusted for sex, smoking, body mass ind

Social isolation stress induces hepatic hypertrophy in C57BL/6J mice.

We previously reported that social isolation stimulated a stress response leading to increasing plasma corticosterone level and disruption of the hepatic lipid metabolism-related pathway, without changing body and organ weights, in mice after 4 weeks of social isolation stress, compared with the grouped-housing control (5 mice/cage). In this study, we evaluated the effects of social isolation stress for an extended period on physiologic changes in male C57BL/6J mice. Plasma corticosterone was reduced after 13 weeks, indicating mice might adapt to social isolation stress. However, body and visc

Social isolation and tolerance development to sodium barbital in mice.

The effect of the duration of isolation periods on the development of tolerance to sodium barbital was studied in mice. The HD50 values for pentobarbital-induced hypnosis were higher in all mice that were long-term treated with sodium pentobarbital, whether or not they were isolated or in groups. Diazepam HD50s were higher in mice isolated and long-term treated with sodium barbital for 38 days and in grouped animals treated with the barbiturate for 20 and 30 days. Social isolation for 8 weeks plus 23 days increased the pentobarbital hypnotic dose (HD50). These data show that social isolation i

Environmental modulation of social isolation-induced sleep loss in Drosophila.

Chronic social isolation induces persistent behavioral and physiological changes across species. In humans, prolonged social isolation is associated with insomnia and increased risks of cognitive decline, cardiovascular disease, compromised immunity, and premature mortality. Yet whether these consequences are modified by the environment in which social isolation is experienced remains unclear. In particular, can access to social sensory information from conspecifics alleviate the effects of isolation and can various ambient environmental settings modify them? A related question arises during b

Post-weaning social isolation increases reward-seeking behavior in mice.

Social isolation is a growing public health concern. Although isolation at any age is harmful, previous studies have shown that isolation during adolescence, correlating with critical periods of brain development, can impair cognitive function and increase the risk for psychiatric illness later in life. In this study, we utilized a mouse model of social isolation (SI) during adolescence (postnatal day 21-35) and compared performance of isolated and group-housed mice on a touchscreen-based continuous performance test (rCPT) and fixed ratio/progressive ratio (FR/PR) tasks in adulthood. SI improv

Social Isolation, eHealth Engagement, and Psychological Distress Among U.S. Adults.

Perceived social isolation is a major public health concern in the United States and is consistently associated with adverse psychological outcomes. However, the psychological and behavioral pathways through which perceived social isolation is associated with distress remain incompletely understood, particularly in the context of digital health behaviors. Drawing primarily on Social Cognitive Theory, while also considering health anxiety, uncertainty management, and stress-and-coping perspectives, this study examined a serial mediation model in which eHealth engagement and health self-efficacy
