Learned helplessness and social avoidance in the Wistar-Kyoto rat.

The Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rat is an established depression model characterized by elevated anxiety- and depression-like behavior across a variety of tests. Here we further characterized specific behavioral and functional domains relevant to depression that are altered in WKY rats. Moreover, since early-life experience potently shapes emotional behavior, we also determined whether aspects of WKYs' phenotype were modifiable by early-life factors using neonatal handling or maternal separation. We first compared WKYs' behavior to that of Sprague-Dawley (SD), Wistar, and Spontaneously Hypertensive (SH

Development of an automated approach for investigating social learning in mice.

Mice have been shown to learn from each other through social interactions. However, the extent and strategies of social learning in mice remain largely unknown, beyond spatially and temporally limited tests of social memory retention. Here, we present a method that integrates (1) the IntelliCage, a commercially available tool for automated behavioral testing, and (2) the Live Mouse Tracker (LMT), an open-source solution for 24/7 live animal tracking. This approach allows for the investigation of learning behavior in semi-naturalistic group settings while minimizing experimenter interference. I

A categorical analysis of the social attributions of learning-disabled children.

The social attributions of learning-disabled and control children with either similar or higher social acceptance ratings were assessed within an open-ended interview format. In addition, measures of social self-esteem and expectation of social success were obtained. The learning-disabled group used luck more frequently and personality interaction less frequently as explanations for social outcomes than did the other two groups. Learning-disabled children also had the lowest expectation of social success and, like the low acceptance group, had a poorer social self-image. Possible explanations

Gender and substance use among Latinx college students: An application of social structure social learning theory.

Social structure social learning theory (SSSL) is a theoretical framework that has been used to understand gender differences in substance use. However, the Latinx community remains understudied in this body of research. Drawing on a Latinx college student sample, we tested the extent to which four social learning mechanisms specified by SSSL theory (positive definitions, neutralizing definitions, differential association, and differential reinforcement) explained gender differences in three substance use outcomes: alcohol intoxication, marijuana use, and illicit prescription drug use. We foun

Dissociating social reward learning and behavior in alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is associated with deficits in social cognition and behavior, but why these deficits are acquired is unknown. We hypothesized that a reduced association between actions and outcomes for others, i.e., social reward learning, would explain prevalent social deficiencies in AUD. METHODS: We conducted one laboratory study (n = 234) and one confirmatory online study (n = 258), comparing young adults with AUD to age-, gender-, and education-matched healthy controls on a standardized reward learning task. In the task, participants learned to maximize reward for

Scopolamine affects fear learning and social recognition in adult zebrafish.

Scopolamine is the secondary metabolite of the Datura stramonium and act as a muscarinic receptor antagonist. Previous studies showed that scopolamine caused attention and memory deficit. However, the effects of scopolamine on specific cognitive functions, such as fear learning and social recognition, remain poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate the effects of scopolamine on fear learning, social memory, and neural activity in zebrafish, providing a novel perspective on its impact on cognitive and social behaviors. Here, we used equal number of male and female zebrafish as an animal model an

Putting people first: a social constructionist approach to learning disability.

Moving from an individual to a social focus will allow clinical psychologists working with people who have learning disabilities to address a wider range of difficulties experienced by this client group. Social constructionist theory may be a useful framework to facilitate such an approach, and is intellectually compatible with changes occurring in other related disciplines. Research relevant to this perspective is reviewed under four subheadings proposed by Doise. Implications for clinical practice are discussed by reference to two case studies.

The illusion of conformity: when independent learning mimics social influence.

Although individuals tested in isolation often show substantial behavioral variation, they tend to behave more uniformly in groups, a pattern commonly attributed to social conformity (ie, a form of social learning in which individuals preferentially adopt the most common trait). However, evidence for social conformity in nonhuman animals remains debated, as group-level convergence can also arise from independent learning, where individuals adopt the trait maximizing their fitness. Such learning can generate either adaptive phenotypic convergence or pseudo-conformity when aligning with the grou

Understanding how movement signals shape early social coordination and learning.

From early in life, social interactions rely on a rich exchange of nonverbal information. This review paper focuses on the nonverbal, kinematic information conveyed by how social partners move and proposes that such movement modulations may facilitate interpersonal coordination between infants and adults, as well as support infants' learning in early interactions. So far, findings on movement modulations have been investigated in isolation: sensorimotor communication in interpersonal coordination between adults (signaling) on the one hand, and in early teaching interactions between adults and

Artificial intelligence systems distort upstream selection in human social learning.

Humans are social learners who depend on observing others to acquire knowledge, norms, and behaviors, a capacity that underlies cumulative cultural evolution. Social learning unfolds in two stages: upstream selection determines what information becomes visible, and downstream selection determines what learners copy from that visible sample. Downstream selection occurs through biases such as conformity bias (copying what appears common) and prestige bias (copying those who appear highly respected). These downstream biases can be adaptive when upstream selection yields a sample that reflects the

Monkey as seed dispersers of Neotropical Vanilla involves social learning.

Social learning comprises the processes by which individuals acquire new information about environment and behaviour through observation and interaction with their parents and members of their community. In the orchid genus Vanilla, seed dispersal is mediated by vertebrates. Although primates have never been observed consuming vanilla pods under experimental conditions, monkeys have been proposed as possible seed dispersers of Vanilla in Central Brazil. Here, I investigate mechanisms involved in the attraction and rewarding of seed dispersers of a Neotropical Vanilla based on field observation

Optimal dynamic pricing for public transportation considering consumer social learning.

Effective public transportation pricing strategies are critical to reducing traffic congestion and meeting consumer demand for sustainable urban development. In this study, we construct a dynamic game pricing model and a social learning network model for consumers of three modes of public transportation including metro, bus, and pa-transit. In the model, the metro, bus, and pa-transit operators maximize their profits through dynamic pricing optimization, and consumers maximize their utility by adjusting their travel habits through social learning in the social network. The reinforcement learni

Frontal operculum temporal difference signals and social motor response learning.

Substantial experimental evidence supports the theory that the dopaminergic system codes a phasic (short duration) signal predicting the delivery of primary reinforcers, such as water when thirsty, during Pavlovian learning. This signal is described by the temporal difference (TD) model. Recently, it has been suggested that the human dopaminergic system also codes more complex cognitive goal states, including those required for human social interaction. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with 18 healthy subjects, we tested the hypothesis that TD signals would be present during

Adults with learning disabilities: occupational and social status after college.

Forty-nine adults with learning disabilities who had attended a large public university between 1980 and 1992 were interviewed about their current employment and social status. Most of the respondents had adjusted well to the demands and complexities of adulthood. More than 80% of the participants not still in college at the time of the interview were employed, mostly in white collar jobs. Although most of the participants indicated that their learning disabilities affected them at work or in other facets of their life, they typically did not disclose those disabilities when applying for jobs

Enhancement of social learning family interventions for childhood conduct disorder.

Social learning family intervention (SLFI) is the treatment of choice for young children exhibiting severe conduct disorder and antisocial behavior. Despite the reported success of this intervention, high levels of resistance, poor engagement, and inadequate maintenance of improvements are observed for a substantial proportion of distressed families. These obstacles have inspired enhancement efforts to improve basic social learning family-intervention models. The present review identifies promising approaches for maximizing treatment gains for the conduct-disordered child. Relevant studies wer

Enhancing social-emotional skills in early childhood: intervention study on the effectiveness of social and emotional learning.

BACKGROUND: Social and emotional learning (SEL) is crucial for developing skills such as emotional regulation, cooperation, and goal achievement. Deficits in these skills are linked to later academic and behavioral problems. While SEL interventions have been widely implemented internationally, few have been tested in early childhood settings in Japan, and their effectiveness remains unclear. In 2022, the Fun FRIENDS social and emotional learning program was introduced in class units for 4-5-year-olds attending kindergartens and children's schools in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. Thus, this study

Measuring Social Capital in the Prison Setting: Lessons Learned From the Inmate Social Capital Questionnaire.

Social capital has been associated with improved health outcomes. Measures of social capital have been developed specifically for different population groups, cultures, and contexts; however, there is no readily available measure for use among inmates in the prison setting. This study sought to translate a community concept into the prison setting through the development and piloting of the Inmate Social Capital Questionnaire (ISCQ). Thirty male inmates (living with hepatitis C) participated in the pilot phase of the ISCQ ( n = 23 sentenced and n = 7 held on remand). Dimensions of social capit

From social learning mechanisms to cultural participation: the mediating role of learning culture in Miao embroidery communities.

Research into the sustainability of traditional crafts has focused on preservation, digitalization, design innovation, and creative economy; however, there has been relatively little emphasis on the micro-level dynamics through which community learning leads to sustainable Participation in culture. This study examines the relationships between social learning processes, learning culture, cultural Participation, and cultural outcomes in Miao embroidery communities in Guizhou, China. Social learning is defined by three mechanisms: community interaction, observational learning, and Participation
