Social anxiety as a basis for friendship selection and socialization in adolescents' social networks.

Socially anxious children and adolescents have previously been found to have friends with similarly socially anxious, withdrawn behavioral characteristics. How peers might socialize social anxiety over time has, however, not been thoroughly investigated. We examined this in a sample of 834 youths (339 girls and 495 boys; M=14.29), followed for 3 years. We used the social network analysis software SIENA to analyze the data. The results showed that youths who were socially anxious were less popular and chose fewer friends in the network. They also tended to choose friends who were socially anxio

The neurocognitive impact of loneliness and social networks on social adaptation.

Social adaptation arises from the interaction between the individual and the social environment. However, little empirical evidence exists regarding the relationship between social contact and social adaptation. We propose that loneliness and social networks are key factors explaining social adaptation. Sixty-four healthy subjects with no history of psychiatric conditions participated in this study. All participants completed self-report questionnaires about loneliness, social network, and social adaptation. On a separate day, subjects underwent a resting state fMRI recording session. A hierar

Social networks and environmental outcomes.

Social networks can profoundly affect human behavior, which is the primary force driving environmental change. However, empirical evidence linking microlevel social interactions to large-scale environmental outcomes has remained scarce. Here, we leverage comprehensive data on information-sharing networks among large-scale commercial tuna fishers to examine how social networks relate to shark bycatch, a global environmental issue. We demonstrate that the tendency for fishers to primarily share information within their ethnic group creates segregated networks that are strongly correlated with sh

Addicted to socialising and still lonely: A comparative, corpus-driven analysis of problematic social networking site use.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Problematic Social Networking Site Use (PSNSU) is not a formally recognised addiction, but it is increasingly discussed as such in academic research and online. Taking a quantitative, exploratory approach, this study aims to (1) determine whether PSNSU is presented like clinically defined addictions by the affected community and (2) address how well measurements of PSNSU fit with the thematic content found within the associated discourse. METHODS: Four corpora were created for this study: a corpus concerning PSNSU and three control corpora concerning established addiction

The Development of a Social Networking-Based Relatedness Intervention Among Young, First-Time Blood Donors: Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder is a chronic condition with recurring episodes that often lead to suffering, decreased functioning, and sick leave. Pharmacotherapy in the form of mood stabilizers is widely available, but does not eliminate the risk of a new depressive or (hypo)manic episode. One way to reduce the risk of future episodes is to combine pharmacological treatment with individual or group psychological interventions. However, access to such interventions is often limited due to a shortage of trained therapists. In unipolar depression there is now robust evidence of the effectiveness o

Social and sexual networks of newly diagnosed people living with HIV: a qualitative social network analysis.

BACKGROUND: A better understanding of HIV transmission dynamics is needed to further reduce the number of new HIV diagnoses in Belgium. As environmental and social context play an important role in explaining HIV acquisition despite the availability of effective HIV prevention, this study investigated how social and sexual networks may have influenced HIV prevention and risk behavior among a group of people newly diagnosed with HIV, including their perceptions of how they acquired HIV and their ability to disclose their HIV status. METHODS: We used an ego-centric social network approach, gene

Self-objectification of bodies in social networking sites: Mental and behavioral health problems of young female adults.

Social network sites (SNS) are becoming a popular means of "digital leisure" among young adults. Several problematic consequences of extensive SNS use have been reported including objectifying bodies on SNS. Thus, in this study, we aimed to understand the specific pathway between young female adults' SNS use and mental and behavioral problems using the objectification theory framework. We conducted structural equation modeling of data from 507 Korean female undergraduates to elucidate the relationships between SNS use and self-esteem, depression, abnormal eating, and exercise dependence, and t

A randomized controlled trial evaluating the effects of social networking on chronic disease management in rheumatoid arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Social networking has been shown to improve health outcomes in certain patient populations. While patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) increasingly use social networking to communicate with peers, the effects of these interactions are largely unknown. METHODS: In a randomized controlled trial, we compared RA patients who participated in a social networking group moderated by peer leaders and who had access to a static website offering RA materials with a control group, who only had access to the website. The primary outcomes were patients' RA knowledge, self-efficacy and empower

Molecular networking in the neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses: insights from mammalian models and the social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum.

The neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLs), commonly known as Batten disease, belong to a family of neurological disorders that cause blindness, seizures, loss of motor function and cognitive ability, and premature death. There are 13 different subtypes of NCL that are associated with mutations in 13 genetically distinct genes (CLN1-CLN8, CLN10-CLN14). Similar clinical and pathological profiles of the different NCL subtypes suggest that common disease mechanisms may be involved. As a result, there have been many efforts to determine how NCL proteins are connected at the cellular level. A main d

Decoupling between hub-connected functional connectivity of the social brain network and real-world social network in individuals with social anhedonia.

Altered hub regions in brain network have been consistently reported in patients with schizophrenia. However, it is unclear whether similar altered hub regions of the brain would be exhibited in individuals with subclinical features of schizophrenia such as social anhedonia (SA). In this study, we examined the hub regions of resting-state social brain network (SBN) of 35 participants with SA and 50 healthy controls (HC). We further examined the prediction effect of hub-connected FCs with SBN on the real-life social network characteristics. Our findings showed that the right amygdala, left temp

Understanding Mental Health Issues in Different Subdomains of Social Networking Services: Computational Analysis of Text-Based Reddit Posts.

BACKGROUND: Users increasingly use social networking services (SNSs) to share their feelings and emotions. For those with mental disorders, SNSs can also be used to seek advice on mental health issues. One available SNS is Reddit, in which users can freely discuss such matters on relevant health diagnostic subreddits. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we analyzed the distinctive linguistic characteristics in users' posts on specific mental disorder subreddits (depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, schizophrenia, autism, and mental health) and further validated their

Narratives of the Origins of Kinky Sexual Desire Held by Users of a Kink-Oriented Social Networking Website.

Empirical research on the origins of kinky erotic desires (e.g., sadomasochism, bondage, domination/submission, roleplaying, sexual fetishism, etc.) has been limited and rarely rooted in the narratives of kinky people themselves. Among a sample of 260 self-identified kinky users of a kink-oriented social networking website living in 21 countries, we examined self-reported narratives of the origins of kink desires. An inductive coding process by four independent coders yielded 20 categories of responses, organized into five broad discourses about the origins of kinky desires: identity (e.g., pe

Social networks and vaccination: a perspective on the essential role of social networks to improve vaccination outcomes in public health.

Vaccines protect against life-threatening diseases and save millions of lives each year in people of all ages, but vaccination rates remain suboptimal and inequitable. Social networks, in which individuals are linked, offer capacity to transmit infectious diseases and protection against them by the diffusion of vaccination behavior. However, social networks are underutilized in public health strategies. This perspective paper advances a network-informed framework that reconceptualizes vaccination behavior as socially embedded. We integrate behavioral drivers with network processes, such as soc

The social salience network hypothesis of autism: Disrupted network activity, oxytocin signaling, and implications for social symptoms.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex condition characterized by its heterogeneity, with significant variability in symptoms across subtypes and associated comorbidities. Despite the urgent need to develop mechanism-based therapies for the core social symptoms of ASD, progress has been hindered by the heterogeneous etiology of this neurodevelopmental disorder and our still limited understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying social behavior. The evaluation of sociosensory cues and the modulation of motivation to engage socially are fundamental components of social interaction, thoug
