Perceived social norms and video gaming in emerging adults: A cross-sectional investigation.

BACKGROUND: Problematic video gaming is a growing concern among emerging adults. While perceived social norms are well-established predictors of substance use, their role in problematic gaming remains understudied. This study examined whether descriptive norms (estimates of others' gaming frequency) and injunctive norms (estimates of others' approval of gaming) were associated with gaming frequency, duration, and problem gaming severity across three reference groups: typical students, same-gendered students, and close friends. METHOD: Participants were 1,295 Canadian undergraduates recruited

Sexual orientation, minority stress, social norms, and substance use among racially diverse adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority adolescents are more likely than their heterosexual peers to use substances. This study tested factors that contribute to sexual orientation disparities in substance use among racially and ethnically diverse adolescents. Specifically, we examined how both minority stress (i.e., homophobic bullying) and social norms (i.e., descriptive and injunctive norms) may account for sexual orientation disparities in recent and lifetime use of four substances: tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and prescription drugs. PROCEDURES: A probability sample of middle and high school student

Social anxiety as a moderator of the relationship between perceived norms and drinking.

OBJECTIVE: College students overestimate the drinking of their peers, and the more they overestimate, the more they drink. The present research was designed to evaluate social anxiety as a moderator of the relationship between perceived norms and drinking among college men and women. METHOD: Participants included 1,217 first-year residence-hall students (62.8% women) who completed Web-based assessments of social anxiety, perceived norms, and self-reported drinking. RESULTS: Results replicated previous research in that students overestimated the drinking of their peers (d = 0.75, p < .001). S

Measuring associations among social identification, group norms, and alcohol consumption: Testing a social identity model of behavioral associations (SIMBA).

Drawing upon both social identity and balanced identity theories, the social identity model of behavioral associations (SIMBA) presents a novel way of conceptualizing and measuring the relationships among the constructs of social identity, group norms, and individual-level behavior-that is, as cognitive-behavioral associations that mutually interact in a triadic constellation and can be measured both implicitly and explicitly. While the social identity approach suggests that the interaction between social identity and group norms shapes individual behavior, the SIMBA-through adopting the metho

Distinct neurocomputational mechanisms support informational and socially normative conformity.

A change of mind in response to social influence could be driven by informational conformity to increase accuracy, or by normative conformity to comply with social norms such as reciprocity. Disentangling the behavioural, cognitive, and neurobiological underpinnings of informational and normative conformity have proven elusive. Here, participants underwent fMRI while performing a perceptual task that involved both advice-taking and advice-giving to human and computer partners. The concurrent inclusion of 2 different social roles and 2 different social partners revealed distinct behavioural and

Influence of gender, age, and social norm on digital imaging use.

BACKGROUND: The adoption of digital imaging technology is a critical investment decision, and problems related to employee acceptance of the technology often are underestimated. Literature indicates that subjective normative factors, gender differences, and age may affect employee acceptance and use of new technology. Thus, understanding these influential factors is highly important to organizations. OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationships between gender, age, subjective normative factors, and the intention to use digital imaging technology in an environment where its use is mandatory. METHO

Measuring social norms endorsement and normative influence on contraceptive use among youth (15-24) in northeastern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Despite widespread availability of contraceptives, uptake remains lower than expected given the unmet need. This gap highlights the importance of examining how social norms influence contraceptive use. This study measured young people's endorsement of social and contraceptive use among young people aged 15-24 years in Uganda. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 448 youth aged 15-24, of whom 409 were sexually active. A Likert-scale social norms tool, developed by the same research team through literature review and qualitative research, was applied. Eight scales ca

Social norms and social opportunities: a qualitative study of influences on tobacco use among urban adolescent girls in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use is a global public health threat and a leading preventable cause of death in the world. While cigarette use among youth has been decreasing in high-income countries, low- and middle-income countries have contrastingly high rates of adolescent smoking. In Ghana, smoking prevalence is lower than in other parts of the African continent and more common among men than women; however the gender gap in tobacco use among adolescents has narrowed, with shisha use among girls recently surpassing boys. These trends toward increased relative use among adolescent girls are a cause f

Making non-compliance visible: how smart bins reshape social norms in urban waste management.

Urban waste management increasingly relies on hybrid collection systems based on controlled-access smart bins. Their implicit promise is to strengthen compliance by increasing behavioural control while reducing the organisational costs associated with door-to-door collection. This article tests this premise through a survey of 502 users involved in a large-scale Italian pilot project. Integrating analytical sociology, social norms theory, and Science and Technology Studies, we identify three interrelated mechanisms underlying the system's ambivalent outcomes: limited norm internalisation, inef

From Collaboration to Identity: The Role of Social Norms and Interdependence in Medical Students.

Social Interdependence Theory posits that cooperative behavior emerges when individuals perceive that their outcomes depend on the actions of others, a dynamic that is central to collaborative learning in medical education. Professional identity formation is recognized as a key developmental process during early medical training; however, quantitative evidence examining its association with collaborative interdependence in preclinical cohorts remains limited. This cross-sectional, correlational, non-experimental study examined the associations between perceived social interdependence and profe

Are online norms-based alcohol interventions efficacious for college students with higher social anxiety?

BACKGROUND: Undergraduates with higher social anxiety symptoms are at risk for co-occurring substance misuse, heavier drinking in certain contexts, and experiencing more negative alcohol-related consequences. Among undergraduates broadly, online norms-based interventions provide consistent and cost-effective reductions in alcohol use and related risks. However, research on norms-based interventions for undergraduates with higher social anxiety symptoms is limited, and less is known about the longitudinal impacts of social anxiety symptoms on the efficacy of online, norms-based alcohol interven

Illicit drug use among college students: The role of social norms and risk perceptions.

PURPOSE: To examine the prevalence and correlates of college student use of illicit substances including cocaine, designer drugs, and nonmedical use of prescription stimulants and opioids, and to identify how different drug-related perceptions are related to past year use of these substances. METHODS: Data were analyzed from a cross-sectional anonymous web-based survey among a sample (n = 1345, 81% female) of students attending a mid-sized liberal arts college in the US. Logistic regression models were estimated to assess the relationships between substance-specific descriptive norms, injunct

Online child sexual exploitation and abuse: A community diagnosis using the social norms theory.

This study focused on the drivers of online child sexual exploitation and abuse (OCSEA) among Filipino children and youth, with emphasis on community norms. An ethnographic qualitative study was conducted in two communities in MetroManila that are considered "hotspots" for child sexual abuse. One hundred and forty-four (144) males and females from various age groups served as key informants. Political officials, Internet shop managers, professionals and police officers were also interviewed. Non-participant observations and mapping were used to provide context regarding OCSEA in the communitie

Exploring stigma and social norms in women's abortion experiences and their expectations of care.

Abortion is a common and essential component of sexual and reproductive health care, yet social norms and stigma influence women's decision-making and create barriers to safe abortion care. This qualitative study in Kenya and India explores abortion-related fears, expectations and perceptions of stigma among women who have obtained abortion services. In 2017, we conducted 34 semi-structured interviews and 2 focus groups with women who had obtained abortion services in Maharashtra state in India and Thika and Eldoret in Kenya. Thematic analysis was informed by the individual-level abortion stig

The Influence of Social Norms on Advancement Through Bystander Stages for Preventing Interpersonal Violence.

This research evaluates the impact of social norms on the advancement through the bystander stages toward prosocial (active) intervention in interpersonal violence (IPV): emotional abuse, physical violence, controlling behavior, sexual violence, and stalking. The influence of social norms on bystander behavior across stages and types of violence varies. Accurate social norms perceptions are associated with routine intervention, although social norms misperceptions are not always a strong deterrent to intervention. Interpretation of a violent situation as problematic predicts increased willingn

Social anxiety among young adult drinkers: the role of perceived norms and drinking motives.

The aim of the study was to examine the separate and combined influence of perceived norms, negative reinforcement drinking motives, and social anxiety on alcohol outcomes. Participants (N = 250) completed measures of injunctive norms, social anxiety, drinking motives, alcohol use, and alcohol-related problems. Data collection occurred in 2010. When examined separately, motives emerged as a stronger predictor of alcohol outcomes over norms. When tested jointly, findings suggest that for drinkers higher in social anxiety, normative perceptions are relevant and to such a degree that norms actual

Social anxiety and alcohol problems: the roles of perceived descriptive and injunctive peer norms.

Although people with higher social anxiety (HSA) appear particularly vulnerable to alcohol-related problems it remains unclear why people with HSA experience such problems. One possibility is that HSA people's drinking behavior is influenced by their beliefs about others' drinking (i.e., descriptive norms) and/or others' approval of drinking (i.e., injunctive norms). The current study investigated the relationship between social anxiety, alcohol-related problems, drinking frequency and quantity, and descriptive and injunctive norms. The sample consisted of current drinkers with clinically elev

Social norms and club drug use of young adult college students during Music Week.

Background: Young adult college students have high rates of substance use, theoretically related to social norms. Behavioral norms refer to the quantity of substances that students think others use, and attitudes refer to how much students or others approve of substance use. Prior research has shown a relationship between behavioral norms, student attitudes, and perceived parental attitudes and alcohol and marijuana use. However, the relationship between social norms and use of club drugs (e.g., MDMA) has not been studied. Objective: The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to expand knowl

Normative data and clinical usability of the brief examination of social abilities: a novel screening test for social cognition.

BACKGROUND: Social cognition impairments are common across neurological and psychiatric conditions and are associated with poor functional outcomes, yet their systematic assessment in routine clinical practice remains limited. This study aimed to introduce a novel screening battery for social cognition, the Brief Examination of Social Abilities (BE-Social), to provide Italian normative data and evidence on its clinical usability. METHODS: The BE-Social assesses various socio-cognitive abilities (i.e., social perception, Theory of Mind (ToM), empathy, and social norm understanding) through sev
