OBJECTIVE: This study examined the engagement patterns of older Chinese adults and their association with depression, including potential mediating roles of social support and aging attitudes, and how they are influenced by urban and rural factors.
METHODS: We use latent class analysis to categorized social engagement patterns using national survey data from 5,582 Chinese adults aged over 60. The effect of moderation and mediation was tested by the PROCESS macro (Model 4 and Model 8) for SPSS 27.0 by Hayes, using 5,000 bootstrap samples.
RESULTS: Three social engagement patterns were identif

BACKGROUND: Social participation is a complex construct, thus different factors may facilitate or restrict engagement. Adolescents with Cerebral Palsy (CP) and their mothers often experience barriers in social participation. Therefore, they are frequently facing challenges in order to engage in meaningful activities, in different contexts.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed at exploring the perspectives of mothers and adolescents with CP on their social participation.
METHOD: This is a cross-sectional and exploratory study, with a qualitative design. Seven adolescents with CP, aged from 11 to17 years old a

INTRODUCTION: Sensory processing differences are increasingly recognized in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but their relationship with social participation remains understudied. This study examined sensory processing and social participation across three adult ADHD symptom groups and evaluated the association between sensory processing and social participation.
METHODS: This cross-sectional online survey included 209 adults aged 21-65 years, categorized into self-reported ADHD diagnosis (n = 91), elevated ADHD symptoms without a reported diagnosis (n = 66), and l

BACKGROUND: Social participation is a crucial Quality of Life (QoL) factor. Inclusion theater programming allows rehabilitation providers to collaborate with arts professionals to provide rich, authentic, inclusive therapeutic experiences for individuals with communication disorders secondary to intellectual and developmental disabilities and neurodivergence.
METHODS: Qualitative thematic analysis was used to examine semi-structured interviews with five parents of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) or neurodivergence regarding their child's participation in an inc

OBJECTIVES: To analyze prefrailty's relationship with limitations in activities of daily living (ADLs) and restrictions in social participation.
METHOD: Robust (Fried 0/4; n = 214; Mage = 82.3 years [SD ±2.1]) and prefrail (Fried 1-2/4; n = 191; Mage = 83.8 years [SD ±3.2]) community-dwelling older individuals were included. Frailty scores were obtained from weight loss, exhaustion, gait speed, and grip strength. A total disability index (DI) expressed dependency for basic (b-), instrumental (i-), and advanced (a-)ADLs. Total participation score, being a member, total number of memberships, b

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate social participation of individuals completing treatment for leprosy and to describe the relationship with physical sequelae and sociodemographic characteristics.
DESIGN: A cross-sectional, descriptive study was performed involving all leprosy affected people who were treated between 1998 and 2006 in São José do Rio Preto, Brazil. General and clinical data were collected and the subjects were assessed using the degree of physical disability of the WHO (DPD-WHO), the Eye-hand-foot (EHF) score, and the participation scale (PS), which measures social participation of indi

The purpose of this preliminary study was to examine associations between leaving home to engage in bingo or gambling activity and indices of physical and mental health and social support among a representative community cohort of 1016 elderly people. Cross-sectional and longitudinal data gathered from a prospective epidemiological study in a rural, low socio-economic status, area of Pennsylvania was employed. The cohort had a mean age of 78.8 (SD = 5.1) (range 71-97) and participated in three consecutive biennial "waves" of data collection. Nearly half (47.7) of the cohort reported gambling.

Against the backdrop of growing public concern regarding mental health, examining the relationship between arts participation and individual psychological well-being is important for understanding the potential health-related value of sociocultural activities. Drawing on large-scale microdata from the Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS), this study employs ordinary least squares (OLS) regression models to investigate the association between arts participation and individual mental health, while further examining potential mediating pathways and group heterogeneity. The results indicate that,

To monitor progress in including persons with disabilities, including in interventions which can improve their health and quality of life, it is crucial to collect data on their participation. However, there are many different ways of defining disability and thus categorising individuals as disabled/not disabled, which may impact measures of participation. This study aims to assess the relationship between three different measures of disability and the level of participation of persons with disabilities. We analysed data from a population-based survey of disability amongst Syrian refugees in I

PURPOSE: Advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is associated with a high symptom burden that negatively impacts daily functioning and quality of life. A better understanding of the time course and relationships between these constructs can help tailor rehabilitation interventions in the context of disease progression. The objectives were to describe and compare the trajectories in mobility, participation, and symptom burden and to assess associations and explore predictors of mobility change.
METHODS: Secondary data analysis of a longitudinal cohort study of 110 participants with NSCLC.

OBJECTIVE: Social participation is an important aspect associated with health-related outcomes in chronic diseases. However, little is known about the factors that may affect participation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We aimed to examine whether pain, fatigue, anxiety, depression, and illness perception are associated with social participation in patients with RA when controlled for clinical and sociodemographic variables. We also analysed the mediating role of illness perception in the association between physical and psychological variables on social participation.

This study investigated the associations between self-reported deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH) and informal and formal social participation among Americans aged 65 or older and how their family resources, health, and community social capital may partially account for these associations. Using cross-sectional data from the National Health and Aging Trends Study, multiple logistic regressions were conducted to test the research questions. Results revealed that older adults who were D/HH had significantly lower odds of attending recreational and clubs and organized activities. Family resources and

OBJECTIVES: Chronic diseases are common in midlife and old age and smoking can pose more health and longevity challenges for older people with chronic illnesses. In China where smoking is highly prevalent, older adults are likely to continue smoking even after developing severe chronic diseases. We examined the national prevalence of persistent smoking among older adults. We also investigated the sociodemographic characteristics of persistent smoking among ever-smokers with chronic diseases and its association with social participation (of various types).
METHODS: We used data from a national

OBJECTIVES: Although emerging research suggests neighborhood characteristics can support and restrict social participation in older adults, further research regarding a wider range of neighborhood characteristics and interactions between individual and neighborhood characteristics is needed. This study explored associations between neighborhood characteristics and frequency of participation in three social activities among older adults and interactions between neighborhood characteristics and mobility limitation as they relate to participation.

PURPOSE: Two objectives are being pursued: (1) to describe and compare the level of social participation of children aged 5-13 with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) to children of the same age with typical development (TD) and (2) to describe and compare the level of social participation of two subgroups of youths with DCD, e.g. children with dyspraxia affecting both the motor sphere and the verbal sphere (mixed dyspraxia) and children with developmental dyspraxia.
METHOD: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 27 youngsters with DCD: 9 having developmental dyspraxia and 18 h

INTRODUCTION: Population aging has intensified scholarly attention towards the social dimensions of well-being in later life. While previous research has largely emphasized physical health and economic security, social health-reflecting individuals' ability to maintain meaningful relationships and social participation-remains comparatively underexplored, particularly among older adults in rural communities. Addressing this gap, the present study investigates how family integration, social participation, and psychosocial well-being contribute to social health in later life.
METHODS: We conduct
