Changes in self-perception during treatment of social phobia.

Ninety individuals with social phobia were randomly assigned to a waitlist control group, a cognitive-behavioral therapy group, or an exposure therapy group without explicit cognitive intervention. Two independent raters classified more than 2,000 thoughts that were reported by participants while anticipating socially stressful situations at pretest and posttest. Each thought was classified on the basis of its valence (positive, negative, or neutral) and attentional focus (self or other). The 2 treatments demonstrated a greater reduction in the frequency of negative self-focused thoughts than

Psychiatrists' Perceptions of Facebook and Other Social Media.

The literature has seen a surge in research on the mental health impacts of technologies such as Facebook, Twitter and other social media, but little is known regarding how mental health workers perceive patients and clients who report use of such technologies. The present study examines how psychiatrists perceive social media and whether they make use of it. Psychiatrists (N = 48) at a tertiary care centre in Canada completed a questionnaire assessing history of using social networking sites (SNSs) such as Facebook and Google Plus and status update sites (SUSs) such as Twitter and Livejournal

Social performance deficits in social anxiety disorder: reality during conversation and biased perception during speech.

Cognitive models emphasize that patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) are mainly characterized by biased perception of their social performance. In addition, there is a growing body of evidence showing that SAD patients suffer from actual deficits in social interaction. To unravel what characterizes SAD patients the most, underestimation of social performance (defined as the discrepancy between self-perceived and observer-perceived social performance), or actual (observer-perceived) social performance, 48 patients with SAD and 27 normal control participants were observed during a speech

Social media users' perceptions about health mis- and disinformation on social media.

This study used recently released nationally representative data with new measures on health information seeking to estimate the prevalence and predictors of adult social media users' perceptions of health mis- and disinformation on social media. Most adults who use social media perceive some (46%) or a lot (36%) of false or misleading health information on social media, but nearly one-fifth reported either none or a little (18%). More than two-thirds of participants reported that they were unable to assess social media information as true or false (67%). Our study identified certain populatio

In the moment social experiences and perceptions of children with social anxiety disorder: A qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: Childhood social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common and disabling condition. General forms of cognitive behavioural treatments have demonstrated poorer efficacy for childhood SAD when compared to other childhood anxiety disorders and further understanding of the psychological factors that contribute to the maintenance of childhood SAD is warranted. Examining the social experiences of children with SAD may help to identify relevant psychological factors and increase our understanding of what keeps childhood SAD going. METHODS: The current study used reflexive thematic analysis to a

Impression management in distributive justice: balancing fairness and social perception.

Distributive justice involves choices between principles such as strict equality and merit-based equity. This study examined whether individuals use these principles strategically to manage impressions, signaling warmth or competence in resource allocation. In Experiment 1, allocation choices differed according to evaluator orientation, although evaluator selections were also linked to monetary incentives. In Experiment 2, after evaluator-linked monetary incentives were removed, a similar but attenuated descriptive pattern emerged; however, the critical interaction effects were not statistical

Functional organization of social perception networks in the human brain.

Humans rapidly extract diverse and complex information from ongoing social interactions, but the perceptual and neural organization of the different aspects of social perception remains unresolved. We showed short movie clips with rich social content to 97 healthy participants while their haemodynamic brain activity was measured with fMRI. The clips were annotated moment-to-moment for a large set of social features and 45 of the features were evaluated reliably between annotators. Cluster analysis of the social features revealed that 13 dimensions were sufficient for describing the social perc

Social stigma and self-perception in adolescents with tourette syndrome.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by multiple motor and vocal tics, which commonly presents with multiple behavioral problems, including co-morbid attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Both tics and co-morbid conditions have been shown to potentially affect patients' health-related quality of life. While TS typically presents in childhood, its manifestations peak in severity during adolescence, a critical period in which affected individuals are exposed to potential stigma from peers. Physical and behavioral

Cerebral resting state markers of biased perception in social anxiety.

Social anxiety (SA) comprises a multitude of persistent fears around the central element of dreaded negative evaluation and exclusion. This very common anxiety is spectrally distributed among the general population and associated with social perception biases deemed causal in its maintenance. Here, we investigated cerebral resting state markers linking SA and biased social perception. To this end, resting state functional connectivity (RSFC) was assessed as the neurobiological marker in a study population with greatly varying SA using fMRI in the first step of the experiment. One month later t

Hyper-volume of eye-contact perception and social anxiety traits.

Eye-contact facilitates effective interpersonal exchange during social interactions, but can be a considerable source of anxiety for individuals with social phobia. However, the relationship between the fundamental spatial range of eye-contact perception and psychiatric traits is, to date, unknown. In this study, I analyzed the eye-contact spatial response bias and the associated pupil response, and how they relate to traits of social interaction disorders. In a face-to-face situation, 21 pairs of subjects were randomly assigned to be either viewers or perceivers. The viewer was instructed to

Social Perception of the Nasal Dorsal Contour in Male Rhinoplasty.

IMPORTANCE: The social perception of nasal dorsal modification for male rhinoplasty is poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of modifying the male nasal dorsum with the perception of such social attributes as youth, approachability, healthiness, masculinity/femininity, intelligence, successfulness, and leadership. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Using computer simulation software, 12 images with varied combinations of the nasal dorsal shape, nasofrontal angle (NFA), and nasolabial angle (NLA) were generated from a photograph of a male volunteer's face in profile. Social anxiety and perception of (un)trustworthiness in smiling faces.

In social environments the smile can be driven by different motives and convey different emotions. This makes a smiling face ambiguous and amenable to alternative interpretations. We investigated how social anxiety is related to trustworthiness evaluation of morphed dynamic smiling faces depending on changes in the eye expression. Socially anxious and non-anxious participants judged the un/trustworthiness of people with different smiles. Social anxiety was related to reduced trustworthiness of (a) faces with a neutral mouth unfolding to a smile when the eyes were neutral at the beginning or en

Heartbeat perception in social anxiety before and during speech anticipation.

According to current cognitive models of social phobia, individuals with social anxiety create a distorted image of themselves in social situations, relying, at least partially, on interoceptive cues. We investigated differences in heartbeat perception as a proxy of interoception in 48 individuals high and low in social anxiety at baseline and while anticipating a public speech. Results revealed lower error scores for high fearful participants both at baseline and during speech anticipation. Speech anticipation improved heartbeat perception in both groups only marginally. Eight of nine accurat

[Perception of social rank and submissive behavior in eating disorders].

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to study the social behavior in patients with eating disorders, in particular the presence of low social ranking and high submissive behavior. We also considered the relationship between these factors and the presence of some personality traits and pathological eating behaviors. METHOD: We performed a case-control study on 249 young women (124 controls and 125 eating disorders subjects). Eating disorders were diagnosed as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and eating disorders non otherwise specified. The patients underwent a routine assessment by means of a

Brief report: attention effect on a measure of social perception.

A measure of social perception (CASP) was used to assess differences in social perception among typically developing children, children with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD), and children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Significant between-group differences were found in recognition of emotions in video, with children diagnosed with ADHD or ASD performing more poorly than controls on measures of knowledge of nonverbal cues and emotional expression. The number of inattention symptoms was found to be a significant contributor to poorer video interpretation across diagnosti

Social capital and career choices among rural Chinese youth: The mediating role of social mobility perception.

BACKGROUND: In the digital age, the influence of social capital on youth employment has grown increasingly intricate, with the mechanisms of online and offline social capital, particularly for vulnerable groups like rural youth in China, remaining underexplored. AIMS: This study investigated the association of social capital with rural Chinese youth's career choices and explored the mediating role of social mobility perception. METHODS: Data were obtained from the 2017 Chinese General Social Survey, including 489 rural youth. Social mobility perception was measured by MacArthur Scale of Subj

Gay Men's Perceptions of Disgust Towards Their Social Group.

Over the past two decades, research has consistently reported a relationship between the emotion of disgust and homonegativity toward gay men. Yet these investigations have focused exclusively on heterosexual individuals' perceptions of the emotion, leaving gay men's own perspectives on disgust directed toward their social group unconsidered. The present online qualitative study addressed this gap by examining how exclusively gay men residing in Canada (N = 22) understand disgust in relation to their own social group. Using thematic analysis, four themes emerged: 1) Sex and Intimacy, 2) Disrup

Social Perceptions of Konzo Disease in Nampula Province, Mozambique.

Konzo, a neurodegenerative disease prevalent in Nampula Province, Mozambique, presents debilitating symptoms known locally as "mantakassa" ("that which breaks legs"). Although the biomedical literature attributes its cause to insufficiently processed cassava amid food insecurity, traditional narratives often cite supernatural explanations, like witchcraft. This review analyzed the existing literature to understand social perceptions of konzo, focusing on traditional leaders' perspectives and their implications for public health. It found that konzo cases cluster within families owing to shared

Intergroup contact informs children's perceptions of social inequalities.

Applying intergroup contact theory to children's thinking about social inequalities, this study investigated whether and why 8- to 12-year-old American children (N = 379, 50% girls, 48% white, SSS M = 6.92, in 2023-2024) who experienced more direct or indirect intergroup contact with immigrants also treated immigrants more fairly in a scenario reflecting a social inequality. Older children and children with more indirect intergroup contact were more likely to detect and negatively evaluate discrimination, because they knew more about what it means to be an immigrant and had stronger social pre

Anatomical variants of acne differ in their impact on social perception.

BACKGROUND: Acne negatively affects quality of life, however quality-of-life scores poorly correlate with disease severity scores. Previous research demonstrated existence of facial areas in which skin lesions have greater impact on gaze patterns. Therefore, we hypothesized that anatomical variants of acne may be perceived differently. OBJECTIVES: The aim was to investigate effect of anatomical variants of acne on natural gaze patterns and resulting impact on social perception of acne patients. METHODS: We tracked eye movements of participants viewing neutral and emotional faces with acne. I
