Co-creating a social science research agenda for Long Covid.

INTRODUCTION: Our objective was to understand how social scientific research could best address the needs and concerns of patients, families, carers, healthcare professionals, academics, private and public sector professionals, and volunteers from Long Covid charities and support groups and people with lived experience of Long Covid. We worked with different stakeholders to develop a list of research priorities that particularly focused on social science as this is where our collective expertise lies, but similar methods could also be used to set research priorities in the natural sciences, me

Trumpism, climate and COVID: Social bases of the new science rejection.

Although the hazards posed by greenhouse warming and COVID-19 are quite different, diagnosis and mitigation prospects for both depend heavily on science. Unfortunately, the reality of both threats has been subject to politicized science rejection in the US, making these deadly problems less tractable. There are substantial parallels between the two cases of science rejection, including common rhetoric and conservative political leadership. Survey research has reached widely-replicated conclusions regarding the social bases of climate-change perceptions. Corresponding studies of COVID-19 percep

Population decline: where demography, social science, and biology intersect.

IN BRIEF: Over the past half century, the world has witnessed an unprecedented decline in human fertility rates. This analysis reviews the various socioeconomic, cultural, and biological factors involved in driving this change and considers whether low fertility rates are a temporary or permanent feature of our future demographic profile. ABSTRACT: Since the early 1960s, the world has witnessed the spectacular collapse of human fertility. As a result of this phenomenon, several countries are already seeing their population numbers fall and more will follow in the coming decades. The causes of

Using Polygenic Scores in Social Science Research: Unraveling Childlessness.

Biological, genetic, and socio-demographic factors are all important in explaining reproductive behavior, yet these factors are typically studied in isolation. In this study, we explore an innovative sociogenomic approach, which entails including key socio-demographic (marriage, education, occupation, religion, cohort) and genetic factors related to both behavioral [age at first birth (AFB), number of children ever born (NEB)] and biological fecundity-related outcomes (endometriosis, age at menopause and menarche, polycystic ovary syndrome, azoospermia, testicular dysgenesis syndrome) to expla

Masculinity, Social Connection, and Loneliness: A Contextual Behavioral Science Approach to Men's Social Relationships and Intimacy.

Loneliness-the discrepancy between actual and desired levels of social connection-is a pervasive public health concern. Research suggests that many men report loneliness and desire more intimate relationships. The Interpersonal Process Model of Intimacy posits that intimacy, the meaningful connection between two individuals, is a critical variable in preventing loneliness and develops through a bidirectional process of vulnerable self-disclosure, responsiveness, and perceived partner responsiveness. This manuscript applies the Interpersonal Process Model of Intimacy, as interpreted from a cont

XVII International AIDS Conference: From Evidence to Action - Social, behavioural and economic science and policy and political science.

AIDS 2008 firmly established stigma and discrimination as fundamental priorities in the push for universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support. Conference sessions and discussions reinforced the tangible negative effects of stigma on national legislation and policies. A strong theme throughout the conference was the need to replace prevention interventions that focus exclusively on individual behaviour change or biomedical prevention interventions with "combination prevention" approaches that address both individual and structural factors that increase vulnerability to HIV in

Social Justice, Science Agency, and Collaborations: Using Participatory Science to Enhance Learning Outcomes in Postsecondary STEM Courses.

Participatory sciences (any science that depends on the knowledge or involvement of the public) are increasingly being included in undergraduate courses. Although they have most often been integrated into undergraduate courses to engage students, we expand ideas of how these approaches can be used to promote student learning. First, we explore three theoretical frameworks, culturally sustaining pedagogy, control value theory, and the ICAP (Interactive, Constructive, Active, Passive) framework, that help explain why incorporating participatory science is an effective classroom practice at disru

Demanding characteristics: Psychiatry, psychology and the social sciences in Martin T. Orne's therapy of Anne Sexton.

This article uses Anne Sexton's therapy by Martin T. Orne as a frame for investigating and contextualising the unusual therapeutic rationale that lay behind her treatment. The rationale had three sources: the results of Orne's experimental psychological research, particularly the 'demand characteristics of social psychology experiments'; the functional sociology of Robert Merton and Talcott Parsons; and the influence of Jerome D. Frank's concept of 'effective hope'. Unpacking this story builds on the work of a number of historians who have destabilised one of the major binaries that has shaped

Sociocultural adjustment and social support as predictors for international medical sciences students' anxiety during COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of anxiety is high among international medical sciences students and it increased even more during the COVID-19 pandemic due to different restrictions and social isolation. Successful sociocultural adjustment and social support could be important factors in overcoming those challenges, however, there is a lack of studies which would investigate the role of those factors among inter- national medical students. This study aimed to assess the role of sociocultural adjustment and social support as predictors for international medical students' anxiety during COVID-19. M

Collaborative Outreach in Ecology Through Social and Natural Science Partnerships in the Classroom.

Ecologists increasingly work in multi-disciplinary projects with communities, land managers, and policy makers to translate ecological knowledge into on-the-ground action, yet graduate training rarely provides structured practice in the cross-disciplinary collaboration that this work demands. We present a case study of a project-based graduate seminar co-taught by an ecologist and a social scientist that paired eight social science master's students (Emory University) with two ecology doctoral students (San Diego State University and University of California, Davis) in a semester-long, largely

Medicine as social science: Rudolf Virchow on the typhus epidemic in Upper Silesia.

Rudolf Virchow's Report on the 1848 typhus epidemic is one of the neglected classics of "social medicine"--a term he did much to popularize. His analysis of the epidemic emphasized the economic, social, and cultural factors involved in its etiology, and clearly identified the contradictory social forces that prevented any simple solution. Instead of recommending medical changes (i.e., more doctors or hospitals), he outlined a revolutionary program of social reconstruction; including full employment, higher wages, the establishment of agricultural cooperatives, universal education, and the dise

Predicting the replicability of social and behavioural science claims in COVID-19 preprints.

Replications are important for assessing the reliability of published findings. However, they are costly, and it is infeasible to replicate everything. Accurate, fast, lower-cost alternatives such as eliciting predictions could accelerate assessment for rapid policy implementation in a crisis and help guide a more efficient allocation of scarce replication resources. We elicited judgements from participants on 100 claims from preprints about an emerging area of research (COVID-19 pandemic) using an interactive structured elicitation protocol, and we conducted 29 new high-powered replications.

Emergence of Coronavirus (COVID-19) Outbreak: Anthropological and Social Science Perspectives.

With the ongoing coronavirus (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2, SARS-CoV-2), the entire community of health professionals is working to control disease and investing crores in vaccine development. The present discussion is to bring the focus on various social issues that emerge during outbreak and calls for equal attention as that of other health-care interventions. These issues are summarized in three categories: first, stigmatization due to lack of knowledge about the source of infection; second, speculations and their consequences around lack of knowledge about transmission;

Utility of the AAMC's Graduation Questionnaire to study behavioral and social sciences domains in undergraduate medical education.

PURPOSE: The Institute of Medicine (IOM) report on social and behavioral sciences (SBS) indicated that 50% of morbidity and mortality in the United States is associated with SBS factors, which the report also found were inadequately taught in medical school. A multischool collaborative explored whether the Association of American Medical Colleges Graduation Questionnaire (GQ) could be used to study changes in the six SBS domains identified in the IOM report. METHOD: A content analysis conducted with the GQ identified 30 SBS variables, which were narrowed to 24 using a modified Delphi approach

Behavioral and social sciences at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Critical disciplines for public health.

The mission of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is to promote health and quality of life by preventing and controlling disease, injury, and disability. Fifty years ago, CDC's efforts were focused on epidemiologic and laboratory studies of malaria, typhus, and plague. Today, CDC's activities cover a broad range of diseases and conditions, and a broader range of disciplines are required to address these diverse public health problems. The behavioral and social sciences have a critical role to play in helping the public understand risk group characteristics and the frequency, …
