During the COVID-19 pandemic, the world witnessed a disproportionate infection rate among marginalized and low-income groups. Despite empirical evidence suggesting that structural inequalities in society contribute to health disparities, there has been little attempt to offer a computational and theoretical explanation to establish its plausibility and quantitative impact. Here, we focus on two aspects of structural inequalities: wealth inequality and social segregation. Our computational model demonstrates that (a) due to the inequality in self-quarantine ability, the infection gap widens bet

Despite recent media and scholarly attention describing the "disappearance" of traditionally gay neighborhoods, urban scholars have yet to quantify the segregation of same-sex partners and determine whether declining segregation from different-sex partners is a wide-spread trend. Focusing on the 100 most populous places in the United States, I use data from the 2000 and 2010 Decennial Census to examine the segregation of same-sex partners over time and its place-level correlates. I estimate linear regression models to examine the role of four place characteristics in particular: average levels

The purpose of this study was to better understand residential segregation and child/youth health by examining the relationship between a measure of Black-White residential segregation, the index of dissimilarity, and a suite of child and youth health measures in 235 U.S. metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs). MSAs are urban areas with a population of 50,000 or more and adjacent communities that share a high degree of economic and social integration. MSAs are defined by the Office of Management and Budget. Health-related measures included child mortality (CDC WONDER), teen births (NCHS natalit

BACKGROUND: Residential segregation is considered a social determinant of health, but there is limited evidence of its impact on tuberculosis (TB). We investigated the associations between municipality-level income and racial segregation and TB treatment outcomes in Brazil.
METHODS: We studied nationwide registries of new TB cases between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2019. TB treatment was dichotomised as unfavourable (ie, loss to follow-up, modification of treatment regimen, treatment failure and death) and favourable (ie, cured/treatment completion). We assessed individuals' municipality-

OBJECTIVE: Investigate how residential segregation is associated with chlamydia and gonorrhea incidence between 2013 and 2021.
METHODS: National-level secondary US data from 2013-2021 from the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention Sexually Transmitted Infection surveillance dataset, American Community Survey, and Racial Segregation Index were analyzed using the Generalized Estimating Equation, and spatial regression. Analysis was divided into two periods (2013-2019; 2020-2021) to account for COVID-19 disruptions. Residential segregation was measured by dissimilarity index categorized in

BACKGROUND: School education for children with severe disabilities tends to occur in restricted or segregated settings, especially for students who require augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).
AIM: We sought to understand the role played by AAC, especially in supporting students' academic learning and social participation in studies conducted in segregated school settings.
METHODS: We conducted a scoping review, searching five databases, supplemented by hand, ancestral and forward citation searches of studies published from 2000 to 2020 involving compulsory school-aged students

INTRODUCTION: The influence of residential segregation and provider density on endometrial (EC) presentation is not fully known. Our objective was to determine associations between county-level obstetrics-gynecology provider density and residential segregation as measured by the Index of Concentration (ICE) at the Extremes on late-stage EC diagnoses in Florida.
METHODS: All malignant EC cases were identified from 2001 to 2017 in the Florida Cancer Data System (FCDS). Using 5-year estimates from the 2013-2017 American Community Survey, five county-level ICE variables were calculated: economic

The paper is based on an ethnographic study conducted in a rural community in British Columbia, Canada. The study examined the impact of community culture on youth's development as sexual beings. We describe how social and geographical forces intersect to affect youth's lives and trace the ways in which deprivation of various forms of capital as well as social practices contribute to some youth being located in undesirable social positions. Our findings illustrate how the effects of stigmatisation, self-segregation, and other forms of symbolic violence can extend beyond health impacts and into

BACKGROUND: Despite 50 years since the passage of the Fair Housing Act of 1968, the majority of black Americans continue to live in highly segregated communities. Differing exposure to obesogenic environments in segregated neighborhoods may contribute to racial disparities in obesity prevalence.
METHODS: We used prospective data from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study to examine associations between levels of neighborhood-level racial residential segregation and incident obesity in black men and women. Obesity, determined by measured anthropometry, and residen

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a mental illness with a complex, partially genetic background. Differences in characteristics of white matter (WM) microstructure have been reported in patients with SAD compared to healthy controls. Also, WM characteristics are moderately to highly heritable. Endophenotypes are measurable characteristics on the road from genotype to phenotype, putatively reflective of genetically based disease mechanisms. In search of candidate endophenotypes of SAD we used a unique sample of SAD patients and their family members of two generations to explore micro

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia, affecting up to 6 million in the United States, and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Despite higher rates of AF clinical and social risk factors, underrepresented racial and ethnic group individuals have lower AF incidence. Structural factors, such as neighborhood-level racial and ethnic residential segregation, have been associated with incident cardiometabolic disease, particularly among underrepresented individuals. However, as data on segregation and incident AF are sparse our objective was to examin

BACKGROUND: Community stigma toward people with opioid use disorder (OUD) can impede access to harm reduction services and treatment with medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD). Such community OUD stigma is partially rooted in community-level social and economic conditions, yet there remains a paucity of large-scale quantitative data examining community-level factors associated with OUD stigma. We examined whether rurality, social inequity, and racialized segregation across communities from four states in the HEALing Communities Study (HCS) were associated with 1) greater perceived communi

BACKGROUND: Previous analyses utilizing birth certificate data have shown environmental factors such as racial residential segregation may contribute to disparities in adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, birth certificate data are ill equipped to reliably differentiate among small for gestational age, spontaneous preterm birth, and medically indicated preterm birth.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to utilize data from electronic medical records to determine whether residential segregation among Black women is associated with an increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) runs in families, but the neurobiological pathways underlying the genetic susceptibility towards SAD are largely unknown. Here, we employed an endophenotype approach, and tested the hypothesis that amygdala hyperreactivity to faces conditioned with a social-evaluative meaning is a candidate SAD endophenotype. We used data from the multiplex, multigenerational Leiden Family Lab study on Social Anxiety Disorder (eight families, n = 105) and investigated amygdala activation during a social-evaluative conditioning paradigm with high ecological validity in the context

BACKGROUND: Atypical brain connectivity is considered a key neurobiological feature underlying the heterogeneous clinical manifestations of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, findings on brain networks in ASD are inconsistent, likely owing to the effects of developmental factors. In addition, how large-scale brain networks in ASD differ across developmental stages remains unclear. We aimed to elucidate the atypical developmental patterns of white matter (WM) structural networks in children and adolescents with ASD using a graph-theoretical approach.
METHODS: Diffusion/T1-weighted brain

Firearm carriage poses a significant public health challenge, especially for youth (ages 14-24) living in predominantly Black communities that endured racial and economic segregation. Structural racism is a determinant of fatal and nonfatal firearm assaults, but the influence of structural racism on youth firearm carriage has received limited attention. Our study examines whether community violence exposure mediates the association between racialized economic segregation and youth firearm carriage. We analyzed data among 599 youths who sought emergency care and reported drug use within the pas

Residential segregation drives exposure and health inequities. We projected the mortality impacts among low-income residents of leveraging an existing 10% affordable housing target as a case study of desegregation policy. We simulated movement into newly allocated housing, quantified changes in six ambient environmental exposures, and used exposure-response functions to estimate deaths averted. Across 1000 simulations, in one year, we found on average 169 (95% CI: 84, 255) deaths averted from changes in greenness, 71 (49, 94) deaths averted from NO2, 9 (4, 14) deaths averted from noise, 1 (1,

This article attempts to demonstrate how Charles Burns' graphic novel Black Hole (1995) construes the prevalence of contagion and pathological transformation(s) as metaphors of social contamination operating within a biopolitics of segregation. Through a study of plague, infection and strange mutations in Burns' novel, this article offers a critical evaluation of the monstrous body and investigates how Black Hole portrays the social reception of a sexually contagious virus through conditions of sickness and exclusion, which become biopolitical in quality. It examines, through close reading, ho
