Nutritional status of healthcare professionals in primary health and social care.

Balanced nutrition is crucial for healthcare workers' health and performance. Despite extensive knowledge of healthy eating, they face organizational and behavioral barriers leading to suboptimal diets. This study aimed to compare anthropometric status and dietary intake among male physicians, female physicians, and nurses in primary healthcare, and to identify deficiencies or excesses of key nutrients. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in six clinics in Karaganda (2023-2024), involving 202 participants (22 male physicians, 67 female physicians, and 113 nurses). Body compositio

Influence of social network characteristics on cognition and functional status with aging.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether more frequent engagement in larger social networks, and more emotional support protect against cognitive and functional decline with aging. METHODS: We examined the influence of social networks on cognition and instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) over a median interval of 10.9 years. Data were from the Baltimore follow-up of the Epidemiologic Catchment Area (ECA) study, a community-based sample of adults in eastern Baltimore. Eight hundred and seventy-four participants completed cognitive testing at both the third and fourth study waves (1993-1996 a

The neural representation of social status in the extended face-processing network.

Social status is a salient cue that shapes our perceptions of other people and ultimately guides our social interactions. Despite the pervasive influence of status on social behavior, how information about the status of others is represented in the brain remains unclear. Here, we tested the hypothesis that social status information is embedded in our neural representations of other individuals. Participants learned to associate faces with names, job titles that varied in associated status, and explicit markers of reputational status (star ratings). Trained stimuli were presented in an function

The effect of subjective social status on depressive thinking: An experimental examination.

Subjective social status (SSS) predicts health outcomes above and beyond objective measures of social status. Both objective and subjective measures of social status are strongly related with depression. Cognitive mechanisms such as depressive cognitions, rumination, and a negative cognitive style are seen as both concomitant and antecedent to depression. This experiment examined the causal role of SSS in developing depressive thinking. Participants were randomly assigned to a low and a high status group and followed a manipulation procedure targeting their SSS. Depressive thinking was subsequ

Clinical predictors of diagnostic status in individuals with social anxiety disorder.

OBJECTIVE: In psychiatric patients, comorbidity tends to be the rule, rather than the exception. This is especially true for patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD), but research on the implications of diagnostic status has been limited. This study aimed to examine the frequency of SAD as: (1) the only diagnosis, (2) a principal diagnosis with comorbid conditions, or (3) a comorbid condition when another diagnosis is principal in a treatment-seeking population. The study also sought to identify clinical features that distinguish people in these diagnostic groups. METHOD: Our sample includ

Symmetry of the face in old age reflects childhood social status.

The association of socioeconomic status (SES) with a range of lifecourse outcomes is robust, but the causes of these associations are not well understood. Research on the developmental origins of health and disease has led to the hypothesis that early developmental disturbance might permanently affect the lifecourse, accounting for some of the burden of chronic diseases such as coronary heart disease. Here we assessed developmental disturbance using bodily and facial symmetry and examined its association with socioeconomic status (SES) in childhood, and attained status at midlife. Symmetry was

Social and functional status of older persons in a north Indian community.

With increase in life expectancy, the geriatric population is growing in developing countries. The Union Territory of Chandigarh has a population of about 0.9 million with nearly 90% in urban and 10% in rural areas. This cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted in Chandigarh over a period of one year; 1998-99 among 362 subjects 65 years or more of age covering a population of 7937 family members in 1882 houses. The sampling was done by random sampling technique covering urban and rural population. The proportion of older persons in Chandigarh comprised 5.47% of the population. Most of

[Between anxiety and depression. The status of assertiveness disorders and social phobias].

The authors try to answer the question of the nosological status of social phobias and assertiveness difficulties, which are usually included in the large group of anxious troubles. The correlation between Rathus Rating Scale, Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) and sub-scores of HDRS were studied in two populations; the first one was constituted by anxious and/or depressed patients, the second, extracted from the first one, by anxious patients only. The results show that lack of assertiveness has probably both affective and anxious components. These results are important from a nosologica

Depression and anxiety in relation to social status. A prospective epidemiologic study.

Longitudinal research in Stirling County, Atlantic Canada, indicated that during the 1950s and 1960s the prevalence of depression was significantly and persistently higher in the "low" socioeconomic status population than at other socioeconomic status levels. Anxiety was found to show a less clear picture. Incidence of depression after the study started was also higher among those who were initially in the low socioeconomic status group, supporting the view that the stress of poverty may be causally related to depression. There was also a trend for prior depression to be associated with subseq

Subjective Social Status and Outcomes After Stroke: A Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Subjective social status (SSS) represents self-perceived social position and may affect poststroke recovery. Despite impacting various medical outcomes, SSS remains understudied in stroke. We hypothesized that higher SSS is associated with better stroke recovery at 3- and 12 months poststroke. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, patients were enrolled between October 2016 and February 2020. We examined associations between 3-month SSS score and clinician-reported, performance, and patient-reported outcomes at 3- and 12-month assessments. Ordinal multivariable regression ana

Do Current and Lifetime Mental Health Issues Influence Subjective Social Status?

BACKGROUND: Mental health issues can impact overall health status, personal relationships, workplace productivity, and other outcomes. AIMS OF THE STUDY: The primary objective of this study is to determine whether recent and lifetime mental health problems are significantly related to respondents' subjective social status (SSS). METHODS: Respondents to Waves IV (2008-2009) and V (2016-2018) of the National Longitudinal Survey of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) provide the data for our research. Our empirical approach estimates Spearman correlation coefficients between self-reported m

Neural mechanism underlying depressive-like state associated with social status loss.

Downward social mobility is a well-known mental risk factor for depression, but its neural mechanism remains elusive. Here, by forcing mice to lose against their subordinates in a non-violent social contest, we lower their social ranks stably and induce depressive-like behaviors. These rank-decline-associated depressive-like behaviors can be reversed by regaining social status. In vivo fiber photometry and single-unit electrophysiological recording show that forced loss, but not natural loss, generates negative reward prediction error (RPE). Through the lateral hypothalamus, the RPE strongly a

Subjective social status and health during high school and young adulthood.

Although many facets of social status (i.e., socioeconomic status, gender, race) are fairly stable, limited work has assessed how youths' identification with their status changes over time. Subjective social status (SSS) refers to one's perception of standing or rank relative to others, and for youth status is generally in the context of society or school. The current study assessed how adolescents' SSS in American society and in their school changes and predicts health and well-being during and after high school. A total of 336 adolescents (Mage = 16.40 at Wave 1) reported their SSS at up to

Investigating the Relationship between Perceived Discrimination, Social Status, and Mental Health.

A growing body of evidence suggests that experiences with discrimination have implications for mental health and that these associations may vary by social status. We use data from the Chicago Community Adult Health Study (CCAHS) to examine how two types of perceived discrimination, chronic everyday discrimination and major lifetime discrimination, are linked to mental health, and how this association varies by race/ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic status. Results indicate that everyday discrimination is generally independently linked to greater depressive symptoms, loneliness, and hostili

Social status mediated variation in hypothalamic transcriptional profiles of male mice.

Animals of different social status exhibit variation in aggression, territorial and reproductive behavior as well as activity patterns, feeding, drinking and status signaling. This behavioral and physiological plasticity is coordinated by underlying changes in brain gene transcription. Using Tag-based RNA sequencing (Tag-seq), we explore RNA transcriptomes from the medial preoptic area (mPOA) and ventral hypothalamus (vHYP) of male mice of different social ranks in a dominance hierarchy and detect candidate genes and cellular pathways that underlie status-related plasticity. Within the mPOA, o

Subjective social status predicts in vivo responsiveness of β-adrenergic receptors.

OBJECTIVE: Several poor health outcomes, including cardiovascular risk, have been associated with both subjective social status (SSS) and sympathetic overactivity. Because prolonged sympathetic overactivation down regulates beta adrenergic receptor (β-AR) function, reduced β-AR responsiveness is considered an indicator of sympathetic overactivity and a cardiovascular risk factor. Though prior research has focused on objective social status and β-AR function, no studies have examined the association between SSS and β-AR function. We aimed to learn whether SSS predicts the in vivo responsiveness
