Stress, stigma, violence experiences and social support of US infertile women.

Objectives: Previous studies investigated the physical, psychological and sociological effects of infertility; however, stigma and violence experiences of infertile women haven't yet been studied in the US. The objective of the study is to examine the perceived stress, stigma, violence experiences, and social support of US infertile women and to compare with fertile women in order to understand the effects of infertility on stress levels, violence exposures, and support. Rethinking social pathways between tuberculosis stigma to treatment outcomes: A gender-stratified mediation analysis of social support.

The mechanisms through which tuberculosis-related stigma (TB-stigma) influences treatment outcomes-and whether pathways differ by gender-remain incompletely understood. Social support (SS) has been proposed to mediate pathways linking TB-stigma to treatment vulnerability, although this assumption has rarely been empirically tested. We evaluated associations between TB-stigma and treatment success, with perceived SS as a mediator. We analyzed data from 620 adults receiving tuberculosis treatment in South Africa. We measured isolation- and disclosure-related stigma using validated scales and ass

Social relationships, mental health, and stigma: A qualitative study of social networks and HIV disclosure in Western Kenya.

The disclosure of one's HIV-positive status is a personal decision that can play an important role in engagement in HIV treatment and care. Social network approaches situate individuals within broader webs of social connections that influence health and wellbeing and thus hold the potential to elucidate key social factors shaping the process of disclosure. As part of a larger clinical study examining how substance use and mental health shape HIV outcomes, we recruited 61 individuals newly diagnosed with HIV at two clinics in Western Kenya to participate in an egocentric social networks study.

Integrating social and neurobehavioral understandings of epilepsy stigma into personalized care strategies.

There is a bidirectional relationship between epilepsy-related stigma (ERS) and medical outcomes. ERS negatively influences treatment adherence and disease management, whereas insufficient medical improvement can, in turn, exacerbate ERS. ERS remains a significant challenge, often leading to delays in diagnosis, limiting appropriate therapies, and creating difficulties in social integration for patients with epilepsy. Even when treatment successfully achieves seizure cessation, failure to address ERS can limit patient social integration, reduce quality of life, and hamper long-term psychosocia

Identifying Stigma Phenotypes in Social Media Narratives of Substance Use: Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with substance use problems experience stigma in different contexts. Identifying characteristic situations in which stigma occurs or manifests-stigma phenotypes-can serve as important leverage points for future intervention. OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to (1) identify stigma phenotypes expressed in social media narratives related to substance use stigma and (2) explore the similarities and differences between the stigma phenotypes from a social ecological perspective. METHODS: We collected Reddit posts pertaining to 3 substances-alcohol, cannabis, and opioids. We perfo

The Internalization of Social Stigma Among Minor-Attracted Persons: Implications for Treatment.

In this article, we sought to build on existing stigmatization research by examining the extent to which internalized stigmatization (i.e., the personal adoption and incorporation of social views, operationalized as thought suppression-an avoidant coping strategy-and low psychological well-being) among minor-attracted persons (MAPs) may impact upon help-seeking behaviors and their avoidance of children. We adopted a cross-sectional anonymous survey design to recruit a sample of self-identified MAPs (N = 183) from prominent online support fora. We found that increased levels of suppression and

Measuring attitudes towards mental health using social media: investigating stigma and trivialisation.

BACKGROUND: There are numerous campaigns targeting mental health stigma. However, evaluating how effective these are in changing perceptions is complex. Social media may be used to assess stigma levels and highlight new trends. This study uses a social media platform, Twitter, to investigate stigmatising and trivialising attitudes across a range of mental and physical health conditions. METHODS: Tweets (i.e. messages) associated with five mental and five physical health conditions were collected in ten 72-h windows over a 50-day period using automated software. A random selection of tweets pe

Social Stigma Associated with COVID-19 in Healthcare Workers: A Concept Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the presence of "COVID-19-related social stigma" in health literature, there is no clear definition of this concept in healthcare setting. It is often confused with related terms such as shame, discrimination, and prejudice, leading to imprecise research questions and ineffective evaluations. The aim of this study was to elucidate the concept of social stigma associated with COVID-19 in healthcare workers using Rodgers' evolutionary concept analysis method. METHODS: Rodgers' evolutionary method of concept analysis was employed to clarify COVID-19-related social stigma in

Stigma as a Social Determinant of Health: A Policy Classification Framework and Call to Action.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points Stigma functions as a social determinant of health (SDOH), producing population health inequities through resource deprivation, social exclusion, constrained health care, physiological stress, and diminished agency-yet it lacks formal SDOH classification. Because stigma operates as a fundamental cause of health inequalities, policy responses must extend beyond health care systems to encompass housing, employment, education, and social participation. Discrimination is already classified as an SDOH; formal stigma classification would address the broader ecosystem that e

Nursing students' perceptions of substance abusers: The effect of social status on stigma.

The stigma associated with drug addiction in the U.S. has been found to be a deterrent for individuals seeking treatment (SAMHSA, 2013). This experimental vignette study examined substance abuse stigma toward a hypothetical heroin addict ("John") in a sample of 62 nursing students who were given different occupational information about John to manipulate their perceptions of his social status. Each study participant read one of three vignettes in which John was portrayed as high-status (mayor of a large city), low-status (restaurant table busser), or unspecified status (no occupational informa

Exploring stigma and social norms in women's abortion experiences and their expectations of care.

Abortion is a common and essential component of sexual and reproductive health care, yet social norms and stigma influence women's decision-making and create barriers to safe abortion care. This qualitative study in Kenya and India explores abortion-related fears, expectations and perceptions of stigma among women who have obtained abortion services. In 2017, we conducted 34 semi-structured interviews and 2 focus groups with women who had obtained abortion services in Maharashtra state in India and Thika and Eldoret in Kenya. Thematic analysis was informed by the individual-level abortion stig

Self-stigma in women with borderline personality disorder and women with social phobia.

Little is known about how women with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and women with social phobia react to mental illness stigma. The goal of this study was to assess empirically self-stigma and its correlates in these groups. Self-stigma and related constructs were measured by self-report questionnaires among 60 women with BPD and 30 women with social phobia. Self-stigma was inversely related to self-esteem, self-efficacy, and quality of life and predicted low self-esteem after controlling for depression and shame-proneness. Stereotype awareness was not significantly correlated with sel

Social cognition abilities in people with HIV: the role of stigma and other factors.

More basic, social cognition is the complicated ability to interact with others. Known to impact everyday functioning and quality of life, deficits in this essential ability have been well documented in schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorders, depression, and other mental health conditions.
