Predictors of safer sex on the college campus: a social cognitive theory analysis.

In April and May 1989, the authors surveyed a sample of students enrolled on four college campuses in New Jersey (N = 923) concerning their HIV transmission-related behavior, knowledge, and a variety of conceptual variables taken primarily from social cognitive theory that were thought to be potentially predictive of safer sexual behavior. Analyses of sexually active, unmarried students' responses indicated that men expected more negative outcomes of condom use and were more likely to have sexual intercourse while under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, whereas women reported higher per

Childhood experience, interpersonal development, and reproductive strategy: and evolutionary theory of socialization.

The concept of "reproductive strategy" drawn from the field of behavioral ecology is applied to the study of childhood experience and interpersonal development in order to develop an evolutionary theory of socialization. The theory is presented in terms of 2 divergent development pathways considered to promote reproductive success in the contexts in which they have arisen. One is characterized, in childhood, by a stressful rearing environment and the development of insecure attachments to parents and subsequent behavior problems; in adolescence by early pubertal development and precocious sexu

Why Luhmann? Social systems theory for a sociology of suicide in the platform age.

Suicide becomes a sociological object through the communications that make it observable, recordable, reportable, and governable. This Perspective draws on Luhmann's social systems theory to analyse how suicide-related meanings are selected and stabilised across functionally differentiated subsystems. The argument treats suicide as a limit-case perturbation that is processed differently by health care, law, education, media, and platform governance. Clinical research remains indispensable for understanding vulnerability and intervention; the sociological question concerns how those realities a

Integrating Social Determinants With the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide in a Study of Bipolar Outpatients.

INTRODUCTION: Bipolar disorder, socioeconomic deprivation, and social isolation are major risk factors for suicide. The interpersonal theory of suicide (IPTS) posits perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness as proximal causes of suicidal thoughts and behaviors, while the social determinants of health (SDOH) framework highlights distal socioeconomic factors. Studies of suicidality in bipolar disorder have used the IPTS and the SDOH framework, but few have integrated them to explore connections between distal and proximal factors. METHODS: This study examined perceived burdensomeness

A Social Network Theory-Based Investigation into the Characteristics of MSM in Virtual Communities.

Social networks significantly influence MSM's HIV prevention behaviors, with virtual communities serving as key interaction platforms. Using a Python web crawler, we analyzed 960 user profiles from Baidu Tieba's "Gay Bar" forum. The social network within this community exhibits a core-periphery structure, where a densely connected core facilitates effective information dissemination, while the majority of users reside in peripheral positions with limited and isolated connections. Relationships within the network are primarily formed based on shared interests rather than geographical proximity,

Testing the social motivation theory of autism: the role of co-occurring anxiety.

BACKGROUND: The Social Motivation Theory proposes that social reward processing differences underlie autism. However, low social motivation has also been linked to higher anxiety. Given the co-occurrence between autism and anxiety, it is possible that anxiety drives the association between social motivation and autistic characteristics. This study tests the mechanisms underlying the association between social motivation and autistic traits. METHODS: Participants were 165 adolescents (71 male), aged 10-16 years, from the Mapping profiles of cognition, motivation and attention in childhood (C-M

Health and social outcomes in the Housing First model: Testing the theory of change.

BACKGROUND: Homelessness continues to grow globally. The Housing First (HF) model offers immediate access to housing and support services without preconditions and has a growing body of evidence documenting its effectiveness at ending homelessness. HF has a robust theory of change that hypothesizes how unique program components (i.e., immediate access to housing, separation of services from housing, client choice, etc.) drive positive social and health changes over time. We advance the understanding of how HF causes client improvement by empirically testing this program's theory of change. ME

Theory of mind and social competence in children and adolescents with temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of this study was to examine theory of mind (ToM) and its relationship to social competence in children and adolescents with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). The secondary aim was to explore the relationship between ToM, social competence, epilepsy variables, and executive functioning (EF). METHOD: Twenty-two children and adolescents (8-16 years old) with TLE and 22 typically developing controls completed two advanced behavioural tests of ToM (faux-pas, strange stories), measures of EF and verbal IQ. Parents completed questionnaires assessing ToM and social competence

A novel ecological approach to assess theory of Mind and social norm understanding for social cognition phenotyping in multiple sclerosis.

Social cognition (SC) impairment is a hallmark of the cognitive profile in Multiple Sclerosis (MS). However, there is a still no consensus on recommended measures for SC phenotyping in this clinical population, limiting our understanding of underlying mechanism and the development of targeted intervention. This study evaluated the suitability of the Edinburgh Social Cognition test (ESCoT), a novel ecologically valid tool assessing affective (ToMA) and cognitive (ToMc) Theory of Mind, as well as interpersonal (SNUINTER) and intrapersonal (SNUINTRA) social norm understanding, for SC phenotyping

Social isolation and its influencing factors among family caregivers of individuals with schizophrenia: A social-ecological systems theory perspective.

BACKGROUND: Social isolation adversely affects both physical and mental health. However, limited research has examined this issue among family caregivers of individuals with schizophrenia, particularly within a structured theoretical framework. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of social isolation and explore its associated multilevel factors among family caregivers of individuals with schizophrenia, guided by the Social-Ecological Systems Theory. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted following STROBE guidelines. A total of 267 schizophrenia patients and thei

Social Disconnection in the Brain: Loneliness and Age across Networks using Graph Theory.

Loneliness, conceptualized as a multi-dimensional construct of unmet social needs, has been linked to adverse health outcomes across the lifespan, prompting significant interest in its underlying neural processes. Our study aimed to address the limitations of prior neuroimaging studies of loneliness by leveraging the Lifespan Human Connectome Project Aging dataset and applying graph theory to characterize its relationship with age and resting-state brain network organization. Socio-demographic measures confirmed prior work that higher loneliness was associated with younger age, being male, unm

Extending Social Learning Theory to Explain Victimization Among Gang and Ex-Gang Offenders.

This study is among the first to extend and test social learning theory's ability to understand property and violent victimization. It specifically tests whether aspects of definitions, differential reinforcement, and differential association/modeling can explain the three types of victimization of gang members: actual experience, perception of likelihood, and fear. The sample consists of over 300 male and female gang members incarcerated in jails throughout Florida. The results show that all three types of victimization can be explained by the three aspects of social learning theory.

Social cognition in Tourette's syndrome: intact theory of mind and impaired inhibitory functioning.

Although associations between social cognition involving theory of mind and non-social executive skills have frequently been reported, dissociations in performance have also been found. The present study was designed to examine social and non-social cognition in uncomplicated Tourette Syndrome (TS). Adult TS participants without comorbid diagnoses were compared to matched healthy control participants on social cognition measures involving theory of mind and empathy, and on non-social executive tasks. Participants with TS were found to make more errors than a matched control group on an inhibit

An arts-based compassion training guided by social neuroscience and creative writing theory.

PROBLEM: Within health science education, arts and humanities interventions are used to teach compassion, yet the connection between methodologies and outcomes is often tenuous. While evidence-based methods for cultivating compassion exist, they are rarely described as guiding frameworks for arts-based or humanities interventions. Additionally, arts practitioners and humanities educators familiar with the theory, pedagogy, and practices of their disciplines are often absent from interventions that could benefit from their expertise. Educational models that are grounded in the available evidenc

Academic medicine career intentions among medical residents: a social cognitive career theory approach.

BACKGROUND: Academic medicine (AM) careers combine research, teaching, and patient care, yet their attractiveness has declined in recent years, particularly among women, who remain underrepresented in this field. Previous research highlights the central role of interest in research, but the cognitive and contextual processes underlying academic career intentions during residency remain insufficiently understood. Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) provides a relevant framework for examining how individual cognitions and learning experiences jointly shape career intentions. METHODS: This cro

Linking Employees' Boundary-Spanning Behaviour to Leadership Emergence: A Social Exchange Theory Perspective.

This study examined the links between employees' boundary-spanning behaviour and leadership emergence, focusing on the mediating role of prestige and the moderating roles of coworker support and relational-interdependent self-construal. Two studies were conducted to test the hypotheses. Study 1 (experimental survey, N = 208) tested the mediation hypotheses. Study 2 (questionnaire study, N = 691) extended Study 1 by examining the moderated mediation model. The results show that employees' boundary-spanning behaviour is positively related to leadership emergence, which is mediated by prestige. A

A Grounded Theory of Sexual Minority Women and Transgender Individuals' Social Justice Activism.

Psychosocial benefits of activism include increased empowerment, social connectedness, and resilience. Yet sexual minority women (SMW) and transgender individuals with multiple oppressed statuses and identities are especially prone to oppression-based experiences, even within minority activist communities. This study sought to develop an empirical model to explain the diverse meanings of social justice activism situated in SMW and transgender individuals' social identities, values, and experiences of oppression and privilege. Using a grounded theory design, 20 SMW and transgender individuals p
