Parents' identification and discussion of their own and their children's emotions are important emotion socialization behaviors (ESBs) that may mitigate child conduct problems (CPs). However, if parents perceive their child to be relatively unemotional, which may be the case for children with conduct problems and high callous-unemotional traits (CP + CU), these parents may be limited in their capacity to use ESBs effectively. This study tested these questions by looking at ESBs in mothers (N = 145) of children aged 2-8 years with CP + CU (n = 24), CPs and low CU traits (CP-CU; n = 94) and a no

Decades of research have emphasized the role that coercive and ineffective discipline plays in shaping child and adolescent conduct problems, yet an emerging body of evidence has suggested that parents' emotion socialization behaviors (ESBs) (e.g., reactions to emotions, discussion of emotions, and emotion coaching) may also be implicated. This meta-analysis examined concurrent and longitudinal associations between parental ESBs and conduct problems, and tested for moderators of these associations. A systematic search identified 49 studies for which data on concurrent associations between ESBs

Mounting research supports that co-rumination, the tendency to seek peer support by engaging in extensive negatively focused discussion, is a risk factor for adolescent psychopathology. It is unclear, though, how this interpersonal tendency develops. Parental responses to adolescents' negative affect likely shape how youth utilize peer relationships to regulate distress, as they shift to reliance on peer support during this developmental stage. For example, nonsupportive parental responses may fail to instill healthy regulation strategies, resulting in ineffective forms of peer support, such a

Family socialization plays a key role in adolescents' social development, yet little is known about how adolescents are socialized across different family subsystems beyond parental socialization. By using latent profile analysis to capture a holistic view of co-occurring family dynamics, this study aimed to identify different emotion socialization patterns in parent-adolescent and sibling subsystems and their longitudinal associations with adolescent interpersonal competence. Participants were 175 families with at least two children (target adolescent Mage = 14.09, 47.4% female). At baseline

The present study validates a brief version of the Multiracial Youth Socialization Scale, the MY-Soc-B, which assesses Multiracial youths' experiences of receiving messages from their caregivers about race and culture. Using a sample of 318 diverse Multiracial American adolescents (Mage = 16.01; SD = 1.30), the original 62 items were reduced to 24 items via an examination of confirmatory factor analyses and conceptual clarity and fit of item content. The model fit strongly supported retaining the eight-factor structure from the original full version. Validity and reliability of the eight subsc

BACKGROUND: Mothers with borderline personality disorder face unique challenges in parenting, as borderline symptoms have been shown to negatively affect parent-child relationships. These challenges can lead to non-supportive reactions to children's negative emotions, a form of parent emotion socialization (PES) that has been linked to negative outcomes in children. Given the inherent emotional arousal evoked by parenting, emotion dysregulation likely influences the type of PES parents utilize. However, few studies have specifically examined how emotion dysregulation affects PES in mothers wit

Parental emotion socialization strategies influence adolescent emotion regulation development. However, there are still doubts about the supportive/unsupportive role of each strategy. This may be likely due to limitations of prior research that analyzed these strategies in isolation, without considering their interdependence. This study explored interactive patterns among parental strategies, clarifying which combinations were associated with fewer emotion regulation difficulties. Participants were 503 adolescents (60.8% female; Mage = 14.54; SDage = 1.17). Network and Expected Symptom Activit

Racial-ethnic discrimination is a prevalent stressor for Mexican-origin individuals that potentiates health inequities in depressive symptoms. However, existing research has primarily focused on individual-level associations between discrimination and depressive symptoms, neglecting the interdependent nature within family systems. Little is known about how one family member's discriminatory experiences relate to the depressive symptoms of others. Although ethnoracial socialization may disrupt the link from discrimination to depressive symptoms, how different ethnoracial socialization practices

This study examined executive function (EF) among preschoolers exposed to maltreatment, and tested whether caregiver practices related to emotion socialization (e.g., reactions to children's emotions; discussion of emotion) moderate the relationship between maltreatment and EF in this period. Participants were (n=107) children aged 4-5 years (M=4.75; SD=0.57; 39% female), with various levels of exposure to maltreatment. Using the Maltreatment Classification System, substantiated reports of maltreatment were coded to produce an index of the multiplicity of abuse subtypes to which children had b

This study examines how mothers with and without a history of childhood-onset depression respond to their 3-9 year-old children's emotions. Mother-child dyads included 55 offspring of mothers with a history of childhood-onset depressive disorders and 57 offspring of never-depressed mothers. Mothers with a history of childhood depression were less likely than were control mothers to respond in supportive ways to their children's negative emotions and were more likely to magnify, punish, or neglect their children's negative emotions. Magnification, neglect, and punishment of children's negative

PURPOSE: Uncertainty in medical decision making is a well-described phenomenon, and numerous scholars have acknowledged and illustrated the process of training medical students to grapple with this aspect of medical practice. While clinical uncertainty has been defined previously, medical trainees face additional forms of uncertainty beyond the clinical setting that have not, as yet, been investigated empirically. One area in which uncertainty can manifest outside of the clinical setting is during professional development. Medical students face substantial stress and ambiguity throughout their

The purpose of this study was to examine the meaning that first-year adapted physical education teachers with a master's degree ascribed to their occupational socialization experiences. An interpretative phenomenological analysis research approach was used, and occupational socialization theory was adopted as the theoretical framework. Five teachers participated in this study. The sources of data were a semistructured focus group interview, semistructured one-to-one interviews, and reflective interview notes. Thematic development involved a three-step analysis process informed by the research

The extant literature suggests that relational aggression appears in early childhood, and gradually increases throughout adolescence. However, very little research has examined the growth of relational aggression from adolescence to emerging adulthood. In addition, research generally examines socializing factors of relational aggression, such as parenting, peers, siblings, or media in isolation. Accordingly, the aim of the current study was to examine these socializing factors conjunctively as predictors of the growth of relational aggression over time. Participants consisted of 500 adolescent

Adolescents learn about emotions through interacting with parents and friends, though there is limited longitudinal research on this topic. This study examined longitudinal patterns in parent and friend emotion socialization and adolescent emotion regulation. Eighty-seven adolescents reported on parent and friend emotion socialization. Parents reported on adolescent emotion regulation. Parents' responses were stable over time and across gender. Friends of girls reciprocated negative emotions more and were less punitive over time, whereas friends of boys increased in comforting and decreased in

Prior research indicates that children of deployed parents are at risk for emotional problems, suggesting the utility of preventive efforts for military families. Effective parental socialization of children's emotions is protective for children's development, and parental experiential avoidance may impede parental emotion socialization, yet intervention studies in this area are lacking. This study examined the impact of a parenting program, After Deployment Adaptive Parenting Tools (ADAPT), on parental emotion socialization postintervention (6 months postbaseline) and whether intervention eff

The current study examined emotion socialization behaviors within a clinical sample of substance-dependent mothers. Interviews were conducted with N=74 mothers in substance abuse treatment (outpatient and residential with or without opiate agonist medication). Each mother had a biological child between the ages of 3-8 years. We examined the factor structure of a widely-used emotion socialization measure (Coping with Children's Negative Emotions Scale) and included a novel subscale to capture the level of consistency of maternal reactions to children's emotions as a unique and salient component

BACKGROUND: Implications of early attachment have been extensively studied, but little is known about its long-term indirect sequelae, where early security organization moderates future parent-child relationships, serving as a catalyst for adaptive and maladaptive processes. Two longitudinal multi-trait multi-method studies examined whether early security amplified beneficial effects of children's willing, receptive stance toward the parent on socialization outcomes.
METHODS: We examined parent-child early attachment organization, assessed in the Strange Situation at 14-15 months, as moderati

OBJECTIVE: Black-White interracial parents may face unique challenges when it comes to racially socializing their children. This study accounts for particular interdependent dynamics involved in racial socialization for Black-White interracial parents by examining the dyadic relationships between color-evasiveness and different forms of racial socialization (racial bias preparation [RBP], promotion of racial mistrust, and egalitarianism) while also investigating the moderating roles of parent race and gender.
METHOD: A sample of 114 Black-White interracial couples (N = 228, Mage = 33.29) recr

This study examined the association among a number of demographic, socialization, and attitudinal factors, and intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration in a sample of young Jamaican men. We conducted bivariate and logistic regression analyses using data from the 2008 Reproductive Health Survey (RHS) administered by the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) for the National Family Planning Board. The RHS is a nationally representative sample of Jamaican women of childbearing age and men aged 15-24 years. Findings indicated that being in a co-residential union, residing in an urban area,
