Socioeconomic factors associated with post-operative biochemical remission in acromegaly.

PURPOSE: Growth Hormone (GH)-secreting pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (PitNETs) are the leading cause of acromegaly, yet predictors of postoperative biochemical remission remain incompletely defined. This study evaluated the association between socioeconomic status (SES) and the likelihood of biochemical remission after transsphenoidal resection. METHODS: The authors retrospectively reviewed 184 patients who underwent transsphenoidal resection for GH-secreting PitNETs at a single institution. Demographic, socioeconomic, and clinical variables included sex, race, ethnicity, language proficien

Social and socioeconomic factors and cognitive outcomes in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Race and social and socioeconomic conditions are associated with disability outcomes in people with multiple sclerosis (MS). Given that cognitive impairment is common in MS, social and structural factors may also relate to cognitive outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To investigate associations between social and socioeconomic factors and cognitive function in adults with MS and to determine whether these associations differ by race. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of data from 274 adults with MS (average age 50.9 ± 11.9 years; 77.4% female; 72.3% White). Key social and socioeconomi…

Socioeconomic Factors Influencing Treatment and Outcomes in Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

Evaluation and reduction of socioeconomic inequalities in cancer survival are a public health priority worldwide. In developing countries such as India, the high-economic burden of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) remains understudied despite its severe impact on outcomes. This study investigated the impact of socioeconomic factors on mortality and survival in AML. Conducted from January 2019 to February 2022 at a tertiary care center in India, it included 41 newly diagnosed AML patients. Socioeconomic determinants such as education, insurance status, social support, and socioeconomic status (SES)…

BACKGROUND: Falls are included in this category due to their high prevalence among people over 60 years of age. The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between the frequency of falls and selected socioeconomic factors. METHODS: The study was conducted among 351 patients of a rehabilitation clinic and center. The research method was a structured diagnostic survey using the Falls Risk Assessment Tool (FRAT) to collect data on fall incidence and associated risk factors. RESULTS: A significant relationship was found between the age of the participants, their level of education (p = …

Socioeconomic and Health-Related Factors Affecting Congestive Heart Failure Readmissions.

Congestive heart failure (CHF) readmissions are frequent and costly but preventable. The purpose of this study was to analyze socioeconomic and health-related factors of CHF readmissions by examining the relationship between 30-day readmissions of individuals with CHF and their payer status, race, ethnicity, primary language spoken, living arrangement, and comorbidities. This retrospective case-control study used secondary data from 450 CHF patients admitted to a not-for-profit Northern Virginia hospital from July 2014 to December 2017. Data were analyzed using χ 2 and logistic regression. Liv

Socioeconomic and clinical factors associated with excessive gestational weight gain.

PURPOSE: Excessive gestational weight gain (EGWG) is associated with adverse maternal and offspring outcomes but efforts to identify women at high risk for EGWG have been limited. The objective of this study is to identify socioeconomic and clinical factors associated with EGWG. METHODS: This retrospective cohort included pregnant patients who delivered live, term, singleton newborns between January 2018 and February 2020 at seven hospitals within a large health system in New York. Patients were stratified by pre-pregnancy body mass index and then classified based on whether they exceeded the

Socioeconomic Factors Associated With Thymoma Survival in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: The effects of socioeconomic factors on patients diagnosed with thymomas have not been previously studied. We propose these factors have an important association with survival. Thymoma is the most common tumor of the anterior mediastinum. Compared to other neoplasms which can integrate different therapeutic approaches for treatment, the most effective therapy for local and locally advanced thymoma is complete surgical resection. This study aimed to elaborate on socioeconomic variables and their potential effects on the survival outcomes in patients diagnosed with thymoma. METHOD…

Socioeconomic factors affecting survivorship of glioblastoma patients in the Philippines.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common malignant primary brain tumor in adults worldwide. However, data on the survivorship of GBM patients in low- and middle-income countries is sparse. We determined whether socioeconomic factors such as marital status, place of residence, educational attainment, employment status, and income affected survival. A retrospective cohort study of surgically managed GBM patients (n = 48) in a single center over a five-year period was conducted using chart review and telephone interview. The mean age was 41 years, with a male predilection (62%). Most patients were m…

Socioeconomic factors associated with full childhood vaccination in Bangladesh, 2014.

OBJECTIVES: Childhood vaccination in Bangladesh has improved, but there is room for improvement. This study estimated full immunization coverage in Bangladeshi children and characterized risk factors for incomplete immunization. METHODS: Using the 2014 Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (DHS), full vaccination of children aged 12 to 24 months was examined; this was defined as the receipt of one dose of bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG), three doses of pentavalent vaccine, three doses of oral polio vaccine (OPV), and one dose of measles-containing vaccine (MCV). Associations between full va

Seasonality of birth weight in Chile: environmental and socioeconomic factors.

PURPOSE: Research suggests a relationship between birth weight and season of birth, but findings vary across countries and underlying factors are not well understood. We examine the seasonality of birth weight and explore alternative hypotheses for its etiology-exposure to environmental factors and varying socioeconomic composition of mothers-in Chile. METHODS: Birth weight of approximately 5 million Chilean singleton live births 37 of 41 weeks of gestation between 1987 and 2007 were analyzed for seasonality by using regression models with month dummies and parametric sinusoidal specification

The aim of our study was to emphasize factors which support pharmaco-resistance in Senegal. For this purpose, 23 patients with partial or generalized epilepsy were studied, after determining the plasmatic concentration of the antiepileptic drugs. The aetiologies were numerous: encephalitis, injuries, neonatal encephalitis. All patients were under traditional treatment before coming to the hospital. So antiepileptic drugs were taken a long time after the beginning of epilepsy later, they were Phenobarbital, Carbamazepine, Phenytoin, and Valproic acid. Only seven patients had sufficient plasmati

Association between the diagnosis of mental retardation and socioeconomic factors.

Clinic data from the regional hospital in Cape Town, South Africa, over 4 years for 538 children with a diagnosis of mental retardation were examined in order to establish whether differences in mental retardation referral patterns existed between low and high socioeconomic areas. Results indicate that mild mental retardation referrals were underrepresented in low socioeconomic areas and that paramedical agencies were the primary referral source in these areas. Differences in mild mental retardation referral patterns by area over time may stem from service difficulties or variations in referra

Changing climate and socioeconomic factors contribute to global antimicrobial resistance.

Climate change poses substantial challenges in containing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) from a One Health perspective. Using 4,502 AMR surveillance records involving 32 million tested isolates from 101 countries (1999-2022), we analyzed the impact of socioeconomic and environmental factors on AMR. We also established forecast models based on several scenarios, considering antimicrobial consumption reduction, sustainable development initiatives and different shared socioeconomic pathways under climate change. Our findings reveal growing AMR disparities between high-income countries and low- an
