Sodium Chloride, Migraine and Salt Withdrawal: Controversy and Insights.

This paper examines evidence implicating migraine headache as a withdrawal symptom of excessive sodium chloride intake. Emerging research in food addiction posits that food and drug addictions share common features, such as withdrawal symptoms. Salt (sodium chloride) meets the criteria for the diagnosis of substance dependence, including withdrawal in which the substance is used to relieve withdrawal symptoms. The premonitory symptoms of migraine include food cravings for salty foods, which can alleviate migraine pain. Edema, possibly related to large amounts of salt consumed in binge eating,

Diagnostic value of urinary sodium, chloride, urea, and flow.

Up to 30% of hospitalized critically ill patients may have a rise in serum creatinine concentration. In addition to history and physical examination, there is diagnostic value in assessing urinary electrolytes, solute excretion, and urine flow in these patients. The correct interpretation of these urinary parameters can avoid unnecessary volume overload and mechanical ventilation, risk factors for increased mortality in patients with rising serum creatinine. The present article also discusses the role of arterial underfilling in causing prerenal azotemia in the presence of an increase in total

Effect of sodium-chloride ion difference on pH regulation.

BACKGROUND: In the Stewart approach, the difference between the cation and anion concentrations, especially between sodium, accounting for the majority of cations, and chloride, comprising the majority of anions, is an important factor in pH regulation. This study investigated the effect of sodium-chloride ion difference (SCD) on pH regulation comparing with those of PaCO2 and lactate. METHODS: Arterial blood gas samples measured at our pediatric intensive care unit of a tertiary children's hospital between January and June 2020 were included. Samples that met the following criteria were excl

Sodium chloride, extracellular fluid volume, and blood pressure regulation.

Data from humans and experimental animals indicate that hypertensive diseases triggered by extracellular fluid volume expansion are characterized, in their chronic phases, by relatively normal blood volume (BV) and heightened pressure-volume relationship may be viewed as corresponding to a condition of "virtual hypervolemia," where BV is inappropriately "high" relative to blood pressure. The limited data available on the phasic relationship between these variables indicate that the BV expansion appears to be a prerequisite to alterations in vascular ion metabolism, that both of these changes p

Tacrolimus ameliorates the phenotypes of type 4 Bartter syndrome model mice through activation of sodium-potassium-2 chloride cotransporter and sodium-chloride cotransporter.

Type 4 Bartter syndrome (BS) is caused by genetic mutations in barttin, which is coded for by BSND. Barttin serves as the β-subunit of the ClC-K chloride (Cl-) channel, which is widely expressed in distal nephrons. Type 4 BS is characterized by severely impaired reabsorption of salt, which may cause polyuria, hypokalemia, and metabolic alkalosis. Calcineurin inhibitors reportedly induce renal salt retention and hyperkalemia by enhancing the phosphorylation of the sodium (Na+)-potassium (K+)-2Cl- cotransporter (NKCC2) and Na+-Cl- cotransporter (NCC). In addition, we have previously reported tha

Analysis of changes in sodium and chloride ion transport in the skin.

The measurement of electric potential and resistance reflect the transport of sodium and chloride ions which take place in keratinocytes and is associated with skin response to stimuli arising from external and internal environment. The aim of the study was to assess changes in electrical resistance and the transport of chloride and sodium ions, under iso-osmotic conditions and following the use of inhibitors affecting these ions' transport, namely amiloride (A) and bumetanide (B). The experiment was performed on 104 fragments of rabbit skin, divided into three groups: control (n = 35), A-inhi

Effect of sodium chloride on bakers' yeast growing in gelatin.

In recent years, industrial fermentation researchers have shifted their attention from liquid to solid and semisolid culture conditions. We converted liquid cultures to the semisolid mode by adding high levels of gelatin. Previous studies on liquid cultures have revealed the inhibitory activity of mineral salts, such as NaCl, on the fermentation of sugars by yeasts. We made a kinetic study of the effects of 1 to 5% (wt/vol) NaCl on the alcoholic fermentations of glucose by Saccharomyces cerevisiae in a growth medium containing 16% gelatin. Our results showed that the effect of high salt conten

Identification of Sodium- and Chloride-Sensitive Sites in the Slack Channel.

The Slack channel (KCNT1, Slo2.2) is a sodium-activated and chloride-activated potassium channel that regulates heart rate and maintains the normal excitability of the nervous system. Despite intense interest in the sodium gating mechanism, a comprehensive investigation to identify the sodium-sensitive and chloride-sensitive sites has been missing. In the present study, we identified two potential sodium-binding sites in the C-terminal domain of the rat Slack channel by conducting electrophysical recordings and systematic mutagenesis of cytosolic acidic residues in the rat Slack channel C term

[Response and endocrine mechanisms in the kidney effected by sodium chloride].

The results of experiments on white rats, consuming different quantities of NaCl, show that excessive sodium chloride load increases osmolarity of blood plasma mainly due to excessive accumulation of Cl- in the blood. At the same time urine osmolarity increases by a factor of 10 due to the rise of water reabsorption and a fall in reabsorption of osmotical active substances such as sodium, potassium, chlorides, phosphates and other ions showing tendency to the glomerulus filtration rate rise. This testifies to the priority of osmoregulation over ionoregulation. NaCl injection causes a fall in d

Compatibility and stability of methylprednisolone sodium succinate and granisetron hydrochloride in 0.9% sodium chloride solution.

A combination of methylprednisolone sodium succinate (MSS) and granisetron hydrochloride (GH) is generally devoted to treating the chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. To date, none of these novel mixtures have been commercially available. The present study was aimed at investigating physical and chemical compatibility and stability of a combination of MSS with GH in 0.9% sodium chloride injection for 72 hours at 4°C and 25°C. A mixture of MSS (0.4-0.8 mg/mL) with GH (0.03 mg/mL) was prepared and stored in both polyvinyl chloride bags and glass bottles using 0.9% sodium chloride injection

Comparative effects of sodium bicarbonate and sodium chloride on reversing cocaine-induced changes in the electrocardiogram.

Cocaine abuse is associated with a number of cardiovascular complications that include arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. Although the mechanism(s) remain unclear, cocaine-induced block of sodium channels resulting in slowed cardiac conduction is thought to play an important role. Several reports suggest that the effects of cocaine effects on cardiac sodium channels can be reversed by administration of sodium bicarbonate. Whether the beneficial effects of sodium bicarbonate are due to sodium ions or an increase in blood pH is unknown. Therefore the purpose of this study was to compare the e

Amiloride sensitivity of the chorda tympani response to sodium chloride in sodium-depleted Wistar rats.

Peripheral gustatory mechanisms that may contribute to the expression of sodium (Na) appetite have been a focus of interest for many years. Because amiloride-sensitive Na transport is involved in the generation of neural signals in response to NaCl stimulation, the present study assessed whether changes in amiloride sensitivity of the neural response to NaCl accompany the induction of a Na appetite in the rat. Na deprivation was achieved by acute depletion with the diuretic furosemide. The magnitude of the whole-nerve chorda tympani response to 0.5 M NaCl was reduced in Na-depleted, compared w

Cyanide intoxication in sheep: enhancement of efficacy of sodium nitrite, sodium thiosulfate, and cobaltous chloride.

For treatment of cyanide intoxication of ruminants, the present recommended doses of sodium nitrite (5 mg/kg of body weight) and sodium thiosulfate (25 to 50 mg/kg) are smaller than those recommended for other animals; the decrease is partially attributed to the greater susceptibility of ruminants to the toxic effects of sodium nitrite. Based on the high tissue concentration and activity rate of rhodanese in ruminants, sulfur donors such as sodium thiosulfate could be utilized more efficaciously. Doses of sodium nitrite and sodium thiosulfate (up to 22 and 660 mg/kg, respectively) were evaluat

In Primary Aldosteronism Acute Potassium Chloride Supplementation Suppresses Abundance and Phosphorylation of the Sodium-Chloride Cotransporter.

BACKGROUND: Elevated abundance of sodium-chloride cotransporter (NCC) and phosphorylated NCC (pNCC) are potential markers of primary aldosteronism (PA), but these effects may be driven by hypokalemia. METHODS: We measured plasma potassium in patients with PA. If potassium was <4.0 mmol/L, patients were given sufficient oral potassium chloride (KCl) over 24 hours to achieve as close to 4.0 mmol/L as possible. Clinical chemistries were assessed, and urinary extracellular vesicles (uEVs) were examined to investigate effects on NCC. RESULTS: Among 21 patients with PA who received a median total

Ion transport in proximal colon of the rat. Sodium depletion stimulates neutral sodium chloride absorption.

UNLABELLED: The model of sodium and chloride transport proposed for the colon is based on studies performed in the distal segment and tacitly assumes that ion transport is similar throughout the colon. In rat distal colon, neutral sodium-chloride absorption accounts for the major fraction of overall sodium absorption and aldosterone stimulates electrogenic, amiloride-sensitive sodium absorption. Since we have demonstrated qualitative differences in potassium transport in proximal and distal segments of rat colon, unidirectional 22Na and 36Cl fluxes were performed under short-circuit conditions

Enhancing Microwave Disinfection: Impact of Sodium Chloride on Microbial Inactivation.

This study explores the role of sodium chloride (NaCl) in enhancing the efficiency of microbial inactivation using microwave energy with two distinct methods: temperature-controlled treatment and predefined cycle. The primary objective is to maintain a stable temperature within the biological samples during treatment. Detailed descriptions of the treatment system's design and the function of each element are provided. Simulations are conducted to illustrate the heating behavior of liquids with and without NaCl, revealing significant differences in temperature profiles between the two media. Th
