Advances in Sclerosants for Low-Flow Vascular Malformations.

BACKGROUND: Low-flow vascular malformations (LFVMs), encompassing venous, lymphatic, and capillary malformations, are congenital vascular anomalies marked by abnormal vascular or lymphatic development and low-flow hemodynamics. Sclerotherapy has become the primary treatment due to its minimally invasive nature and high efficacy. This review aims to outline the clinical applications, mechanisms, and outcomes of commonly used sclerosants for LFVMs. METHODS: We conducted a narrative review related to the sclerotherapy of LFVMs. The search was performed on PubMed using combinations of MeSH terms

A new intraluminal antigastroesophageal reflux procedure in baboons.

BACKGROUND: A new endoscopic intraluminal procedure (valvuloplasty) was designed to provide a simple, easy approach to the cardia and to correct and augment any mechanical deficiencies present. The feasibility, durability, and efficacy of this procedure was tested in 13 baboons. METHODS: The valvuloplasty consisted of an intussusception of the gastroesophageal junction into the stomach to create a nipple-type valve. The configuration of the valve was maintained with eight staples and stability was aided by an intramural injection of sodium morrhuate. Gastrointestinal endoscopy and esophageal

[Clinical application of sclerosing agent injection in treating habitual dislocation of temporomandibular joint].

Based on the experimental study, small amount of sclerosing agent was injected to the site outside the joint and below the ridge of TMJ on 105 cases for the treatment of habitual dislocation of TMJ. All of the cases were followed-up for more than 2 years and it was found that the cure rate reached 89 percent, including one case who was followed-up for 19 years free from recurrence. This method is suggested as it is simple to perform and acceptable to the patients. It has to be mentioned, however, that this injection was not so effective for those with cerebrovascular disease associated with ha

Successful Treatment of Low-Flow Vascular Malformation in the Lip Using Intralesional Bleomycin: A Case Report.

Vascular malformations (VMs) are congenital abnormalities of blood or lymphatic vessels, present at birth and growing proportionally with the individual. They are classified into types such as capillary, venous, lymphatic, and arteriovenous malformation (AVMs). Symptoms include discoloration, swelling, pain, or functional impairment, depending on the type and location. Diagnosis involves imaging like ultrasound, MRI, or angiography, and treatment options include sclerotherapy, laser therapy, embolization, or surgery for symptomatic cases. It is a class of vascular anomalies, known as VMs are b

Obliteration of esophageal varices using EUS-guided sclerotherapy with color Doppler.

BACKGROUND: The current standard treatment of bleeding esophageal varices is band ligation. Although endoscopic sclerotherapy has largely been supplanted by band ligation, there are still clinical situations in which injection methods are useful. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) may allow for a more complete evaluation of esophageal varices and perforating veins and may allow for more effective delivery of sclerosant. Our aim was to evaluate the use of color Doppler EUS-guided sclerotherapy for the obliteration of esophageal varices. METHODS: Five patients with esophageal varices (Child's A = 1, B

Peri- and Intraarticular Injections with Isolable Treatment Effects in Recurrent Mandibular Dislocation: A Mapping Review of the Current Evidence.

Background/Objectives: Recurrent temporomandibular joint dislocation is associated with repeated dislocation episodes, pain, impaired jaw function, and psychosocial burden. Injectable intra- and periarticular therapies have been proposed as minimally invasive methods of improving joint stability, but the available evidence is heterogeneous and frequently involves adjunctive procedures. This mapping review aimed to characterize injectable treatments whose effects could be assessed independently from simultaneous non-injectable interventions. Methods: PubMed (MEDLINE), Europe PMC, and BASE were

Safety and effectiveness of extracorporeal shockwave therapy: results of a rabbit model of chronic osteomyelitis.

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is applied successfully in various orthopedic disorders. Since shockwaves have demonstrated significant bactericidal effectiveness in vitro, safety and effectiveness of ESWT in vivo were evaluated in a rabbit model of osteomyelitis. Chronic osteomyelitis was induced by injecting sodium morrhuate and Staphylococcus aureus into the proximal tibia of 12 New Zealand white rabbits. Four and five wk after the initial operation, soft focused ESWT was applied twice to the infected limbs. Clinical parameters and laboratory values were followed and blood samples w

Spatiotemporally Adaptive and Stage-Matched Tissue-Engineered Constructs for MRSA Osteomyelitis: Pathogenesis-Informed Design.

Objective: Osteomyelitis, particularly caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), often leads to significant infected bone defects and poses substantial challenges for functional reconstruction. Conventional one-stage interventions frequently fail due to the complex spatiotemporal pathogenesis. This study aims to delineate the spatiotemporal progression of MRSA-induced osteomyelitis to inform the rational design of staged, tissue-engineered constructs. Methods: A clinically relevant MRSA-induced osteomyelitis model was established in the tibiae of Sprague-Dawley rats using s

Establishment of a mandible defect model in rabbits infected with multiple bacteria and bioinformatics analysis.

Objective: A model of chronic infectious mandibular defect (IMD) caused by mixed infection with Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was established to explore the occurrence and development of IMD and identify key genes by transcriptome sequencing and bioinformatics analysis. Methods: S. aureus and P. aeruginosa were diluted to 3 × 108 CFU/mL, and 6 × 3 × 3 mm defects lateral to the Mandibular Symphysis were induced in 28 New Zealand rabbits. Sodium Morrhuate (0.5%) and 50 μL bacterial solution were injected in turn. The modeling was completed after the bone wax closed; the effect

A comparative 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging of experimental Staphylococcus aureus osteomyelitis and Staphylococcus epidermidis foreign-body-associated infection in the rabbit tibia.

BACKGROUND: 18F-FDG-PET imaging has emerged as a promising method in the diagnosis of chronic osteomyelitis commonly due to Staphylococcus aureus. The inaccuracy of 18 F-FDG-PET in the detection of periprosthetic joint infections may be related to the predominance of low-virulent S. epidermidis strains as the causative pathogen. We have compared the18F-FDG-PET characteristics of S. aureus osteomyelitis and foreign-body-associated S. epidermidis infections under standardized laboratory conditions. METHODS: Twenty-two rabbits were randomized into three groups. In group 1, a localized osteomyeli

The effect of ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy of incompetent perforator veins on venous clinical severity and disability scores.

PURPOSE: Current techniques to treat venous ulcerations and patients with severe lipodermatosclerosis include the elimination of incompetent perforator veins by open surgical ligation and division or by subfascial endoscopic perforator surgery. An alternative and less invasive means to obliterate perforator veins is ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy (UGS). We hypothesize that UGS is a clinically effective means of eliminating perforator veins and results in improvement of the clinical state (scores) without the complications associated with other more invasive methods. METHODS: Between January
