Symptomatic treatment of brain tumor patients with sodium selenite, oxygen, and other supportive measures.

Patients (16 women and 16 men) with brain tumors previously treated conservatively by surgery, radiation, and/or chemotherapy with typical symptoms of increased intracranial pressure were consecutively enrolled to test the effects of pharmacological dosages of sodium selenite (selenase) in conjunction with other supportive therapies (biological response modifiers, detoxification, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, oxygen therapy). The rationale for the use of sodium selenite was that the whole-blood selenium levels were subnormal in 70% of the patients on admission. Patients also frequently presente

Biochemical Profile of Limnospira platensis Cultivated Under Elevated CO2 with the Addition of Sodium Selenite.

Selenium (Se) biofortification of microalgae is a promising strategy for producing functional biomass with enhanced nutritional value. This study evaluates the effect of sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) supplementation to the culture medium on the biochemical profile of Limnospira platensis cultivated under intensive growth conditions with an elevated CO2 concentration (3 vol.%). Two consecutive cultivation experiments were conducted using Na2SeO3 supplementations of 10, 20, 40, and 80 mg/L along with a control (0 mg/L). In the second experiment, biomass previously cultivated at 20 mg/L served as the

The effects of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells combined with sodium selenite on Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

Recent research found that sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) could ameliorate oxidative damage in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT). Additionally, the effects of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AMSCs) in an animal model of HT were also reported. However, the effects of AMSCs combined with Na2SeO3 on HT are unknown. We investigated the combined effects of AMSCs and Na2SeO3 in a rat model of HT and the in vitro effect of Na2SeO3 on AMSCs using gene microarray analyses. In the HT rat model, the combination of AMSCs and Na2SeO3 restored thyroid tissue structure to that of normal controls

Influence of sodium selenite on 203Hg absorption, distribution, and elimination in male mice exposed to methyl203Hg.

To study the effects of long-term selenium supplementation on absorption, distribution, and elimination of methylmercury (MeHg) in mice, three groups of male mice (Balb/c CA) were exposed for 7 wk to 0, 0.6, and 3 ppm sodium selenite in tap water. They were then given a single oral dose of Me203Hg (2 mumol/kg) by gastric intubation, and elimination of 203Hg was followed by whole-body counting for 49 d at the same Se exposure as previously. Twenty-four hours and 49 d after dosage, 6-7 animals/group were sampled for analysis of 203Hg distribution in the body. Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) acti

Sensitivity of triple negative breast cancer cells to ATM-dependent ferroptosis induced by sodium selenite.

Targeting ferroptosis, a type of cell death elicited by Fe2+ and lipid reactive oxygen species (L-ROS), provides a novel strategy for cancer therapy. Selenium has the potential to treat cancers by acting as a pro-oxidative agent, thus leading to cancer cell death. Here, we found that the triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) MDA-MB-231 cells were more sensitive to ferroptosis induced by sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) than that of non-TNBC MCF-7 cells. Na2SeO3 significantly elevated the level of L-ROS, MDA and Fe2+, decreased the content of GSH and the enzyme activity of GPx, disrupted the expression

GPX4-Mediated Inhibition of Ferroptosis by Sodium Selenite Ameliorates Bone Metabolic Disorders in Ovariectomized Mice.

Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) and its associated fracture complications have emerged as pressing public health challenges due to rapidly accelerating global population ageing. The functional decline of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) under elevated oxidative stress is a recognised pathogenic cornerstone of PMOP, positioning redox imbalance as a critical therapeutic node. Here, we establish that sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) robustly counters oxidative insults in BMSCs, thereby restoring and enhancing their osteogenic lineage commitment. Furthermore, RNA sequencing analysis indicate

Sodium selenite/selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) protect cardiomyoblasts and zebrafish embryos against ethanol induced oxidative stress.

Alcoholic cardiomyopathy is the damage caused to the heart muscles due to high level of alcohol consumption resulting in enlargement and inflammation of the heart. Selenium is an important trace element that is beneficial to human health. Selenium protects the cells by preventing the formation of free radicals in the body. In the present study, protein mediated synthesis of SeNPs was investigated. Two different sizes of SeNPs were synthesized using BSA and keratin. The synthesized SeNPs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with elemental composition analysis Energy Dispersi

Description of lesions in lambs intoxicated with sodium selenite included in intraruminal boluses: Lambs intoxicated with selenium.

Selenium is an essential micronutrient for ruminants, which participates in the optimal functioning of proteins and enzymes that can combat oxidative stress in the body; however, its toxicity is documented in different species. The objective of this work was to describe macroscopic and microscopic lesions in lambs intoxicated with selenium administered through intraruminal boluses. The main lesions at necropsy were pulmonary oedema; the myocardial surface presented multifocal pale areas; the thyroid and thymus glands were decreased in size, and areas of necrosis, haemorrhage and hyperkeratosis

The Impact of Sodium Selenite and Seleno-L-Methionine on Stress Erythropoiesis in a Murine Model of Hemolytic Anemia.

BACKGROUND: Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element that exerts most biological activities through selenoproteins. Dietary selenium is a key regulator of red cell homeostasis and stress erythropoiesis. However, it is unknown whether the form and increasing doses of Se supplementation in the diet impact stress erythropoiesis under anemic conditions. OBJECTIVES: If inorganic (sodium selenite; Na2SeO3) or organic [seleno-L-methionine (Se-Met)] forms of Se in different amounts (deficient, adequate, supplemented, and supranutritional) support stress erythropoiesis in anemic mice. METHODS: Thr

A comparison of the effects of sodium selenite and seleno-L-methionine on disposition of orally administered mercuric chloride.

Previous studies demonstrated extensive effects of the administration of selenite on the biokinetics of simultaneously injected inorganic mercury. As the results of simultaneous administration might well be of questionable value for the assessment of the interaction between mercury and selenium during the long-term exposures relevant for human beings, the present study was performed. The purpose of the present study was to compare the effects of prolonged oral exposure to sodium selenite and seleno-L-methionine (7.5, 37.5, or 75 mumol/L drinking water) on the biokinetics of a single oral dose

Postbiotic Lactobacillus reuteri LRE02 Enriched with Sodium Selenite Demonstrates Antidepressant- and Anxiolytic-Like Effects in Mice.

Postbiotics, including inactivated microorganisms and their bioactive components, have emerged as innovative candidates for microbiota-targeted therapies. Among them, Lactobacillus reuteri-derived postbiotics represent a promising and underexplored strategy for modulating host physiology without the risks associated with live bacteria. Selenium enrichment may further enhance these benefits by strengthening antioxidant defenses and regulating inflammation, two central mechanisms to microbiota-gut-brain axis communication. In this study, we investigated the antidepressant- and anxiolytic-like ef

Sodium selenite antagonizes trimethyl tin-induced chicken hepatotoxic hepatitis through the RNS/NF-κB/NLRP3 pathway.

Trimethyl tin (TMT) is a good stabilizer for plastic products but is also a toxic environmental pollutant. Selenium has good antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and has been widely used in the poultry industry. However, it has not been reported whether selenium enrichment can antagonize TMT-induced viral hepatitis in poultry. To fill this gap, AA broiler models exposed to TMT for 42 d were established and fed a Se-enriched diet at the same time. H&E staining showed that selenium could significantly alleviate TMT-induced liver inflammation. Further analysis of the underlying mechanism

Functional maintenance of hepatocytes on collagen gel cultured with simple serum-free medium containing sodium selenite.

We found that simple serum-free medium containing sodium selenite (Se) is effective for long-term maintenance of functional hepatocytes cultured on a pepsin-digested collagen gel (DC-gel). The concentration of Se was important for maintenance of hepatocytes, and its optimal concentration was 10(-7) approximately 10(-6)M. The effect of Se was specific, as other metals did not have the same effect. The effect was equal to that of fetal bovine serum for maintenance of functional hepatocytes. Using this medium, we could obtained a high level of hepatocellular function including the production of a

TCF19 up-regulated in hypoxic lung cancer cells attenuates the anti-tumor effects of sodium selenite.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxia existing inside tumor tissues stimulates proliferation, metastasis and drug resistance of lung cancer. Selenite, an inorganic form of selenium, has been widely confirmed to induce apoptosis of multiple kinds of tumors. However, its therapeutic effects on hypoxic lung cancer were still unclear. METHODS: RNA sequencing experiment was carried out to identify the differential expression patterns of transcriptomes in A549 lung cancer cells under nomorxic and hypoxic conditions. siRNA was transfected to knock down the expression of TCF19, and Western blot or qPCR was used to det

Sodium selenite inhibits proliferation and metastasis through ROS-mediated NF-κB signaling in renal cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Sodium selenite (SSE) has been reported to exert anti-tumor effects in several cancer cells. However, the underlying mechanisms in renal cancer are yet to be elucidated. The effects of SSE on the proliferation, metastasis, and apoptosis of renal cancer cells, as well as its mechanism, were investigated in this study. METHODS: ACHN and 786-O renal cancer cells were treated with different concentrations of SSE, MTT, and colony formation assays were used to detect the proliferation ability of cells. The migration of cells was detected using scratch-wound-healing and transwell-migrati
