Lives in a gram of soil: linking life cycle biology to soil ecology.

Soils are among the most diverse but least understood environments on the planet. Just below our feet, secluded from our sight, we find complex communities of bacteria, fungi, protists and animals. These communities organize themselves in both time and space, from fast to slow growers, from decomposers to predators, from early colonizers to late arrivers. Despite a growing understanding of community dynamics, the lives of organisms within the soil often remain poorly understood: how do organisms grow, propagate, and disperse within their particle-packed environments? In this essay, I reflect o

Remediation of trichloroethylene contaminated soil by unactivated peroxymonosulfate: Implication on selected soil characteristics.

The advanced oxidation process (AOP) based on activated Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) has been attracting many people in the field of soil and water remediation in many ways while ignoring the shortcomings. The high cost of activators, and energy input, as well as the expense to separate the catalyst and transition metal reducing agent from the treated soil, were some disadvantages of using activated PMS. Based on the above rationales of problems related to the use of activated PMS, this study aimed to study the performance of using unactivated peroxymonosulfate for the advanced oxidation process to

Micro-scale interactions between Arabidopsis root hairs and soil particles influence soil erosion.

Soil is essential for sustaining life on land. Plant roots play a crucial role in stabilising soil and minimising erosion, although these mechanisms are still not completely understood. Consequently, identifying and breeding for plant traits to enhance erosion resistance is challenging. Root hair mutants in Arabidopsis thaliana were studied using three different quantitative methods to isolate their effect on root-soil cohesion. We present compelling evidence that micro-scale interactions of root hairs with surrounding soil increase soil cohesion and reduce erosion. Arabidopsis seedlings with

Soil amendment with sewage sludge affects soil prokaryotic community composition, mobilome and resistome.

Municipal sewage sludge (MSS) is often directly applied to fields despite concerns regarding the spread of harmful microbes and associated resistance genes (RGs). In this four month microcosm study, the dynamics of prokaryotic communities in agricultural soil and changes in mobile genetic elements and RGs following amendment with stabilized MSS were investigated. TaqMan-based quantitative real-time (q)PCR showed that RG prevalence was high when compared to untreated soil and genes for class 1 integrons (intI1), streptomycin RGs (aadA, strA) and tetracycline RG (tet(W)) were detectable for the

Characterizing the phosphorus forms extracted from soil by the Mehlich III soil test.

Phosphorus (P) can limit crop production in many soils, and soil testing is used to guide fertilizer recommendations. The Mehlich III (M3) soil test is widely used in North America, followed by colorimetric analysis for P, or by inductively coupled plasma-based spectrometry (ICP) for P and cations. However, differences have been observed in M3 P concentrations measured by these methods. Using 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (P-NMR) and mass spectrometry (MS), we characterized P forms in M3 extracts. In addition to the orthophosphate that would be detected during colorimetric analysis, several o

Fungicide dissipation and impact on metolachlor aerobic soil degradation and soil microbial dynamics.

Pesticides are typically applied as mixtures and or sequentially to soil and plants during crop production. A common scenario is herbicide application at planting followed by sequential fungicide applications post-emergence. Fungicides depending on their spectrum of activity may alter and impact soil microbial communities. Thus there is a potential to impact soil processes responsible for herbicide degradation. This may change herbicide efficacy and environmental fate characteristics. Our study objective was to determine the effects of 4 peanut fungicides, chlorothalonil (2,4,5,6-tetrachloro-1

Soil availability, plant uptake and soil to plant transfer of 99Tc--a review.

The fission yield of 99Tc from 239Pu and 235U is similar to that of 137Cs or 90Sr and it is therefore an important component of nuclear weapons fall-out, nuclear waste and releases from nuclear facilities. There is particular current interest in 99Tc transfer from soil to plants for: (a) environmental impact assessments for terrestrial nuclear waste repositories, and (b) assessments of the potential for phytoextraction of radionuclides from contaminated effluent and soil. Vascular plants have a high 99Tc uptake capacity, a strong tendency to transport it to shoot material and accumulate it in

[Soil preferential flow in wetland ecosystems:Formation, characterization, and effects on soil carbon transformation.].

Wetlands are highly sensitive to hydrological disturbances. The carbon source-sink dynamics of wetlands are jointly regulated by hydrological regimes and soil structural heterogeneity. Under frequent water-level fluctuations and wetting-drying cycles, complex pore architectures and heterogeneous flow pathways are gradually deve-loped in wetland soils, generating preferential flow processes that substantially deviate from the assumption of homogeneous continuum media. As rapid conduits for water and solute transport, preferential flows can modify soil carbon transformation by regulating the red

Soil organic carbon response deficits reveal constrained vegetation-soil carbon coupling in Tibet.

Vegetation productivity enhancement is often treated as evidence of ecosystem recovery, but its conversion into soil organic carbon (SOC) gain remains uncertain in alpine systems. We developed an expected-response framework for Tibet using the 2001-2020 NPP trend and the change in modelled SOC density between the 2000-2005 and 2015-2020 endpoints. Expected SOC response was estimated among pixels matched by ecological zone, productivity-enhancement decile and long-term grazing-intensity class. Under this grazing-adjusted median benchmark, 44.74% of valid 0-20 cm pixels had a positive SOC respon

Granular straw amendment in improving soil structure and crop productivity in saline soil.

Soil salinization represents a significant global threat to agricultural sustainability and the quality of arable land worldwide. This study systematically evaluated the effects of wheat straw applied in different forms-chopped (CW), granular (GW), and biochar (BW)-on soil structure and wheat growth across mild (S1), moderate (S2), and severe (S3) salinity levels in a pot experiment using saline soil from the Yellow River Basin in Inner Mongolia. Results showed that straw amendments, particularly GW and BW, markedly improved soil physical properties: GW most effectively increased the content o

Soil Microbial Assembly Mirrors a Savanna Mosaic Amid Plant Invasion and Soil Disturbance.

Savannas, spanning 20% of the Earth's surface, are characterized by a continuous grass matrix interspersed with woody patches, supporting high biodiversity and providing ecological and economic services. Although climatic and edaphic controls on savanna structure are well studied, the contribution of soil microbial communities in maintaining spatial heterogeneity and coexistence remains poorly understood. We investigated whether savanna heterogeneity is mirrored belowground and how disturbance and invasion by Megathyrsus maximus can modify these relationships. We used a factorial field samplin

[Effects of lunar soil simulant and Earth soil on lung injury in mice].

OBJECTIVES: Due to prolonged exposure to cosmic radiation and meteorite impacts, lunar surface dust forms nanoscale angular particles with strong electrostatic adsorption properties. These dust particles pose potential inhalation risks, yet their pulmonary toxicological mechanisms remain unclear. Given the need for dust exposure protection in future lunar base construction and resource development, this study established an acute exposure model using lunar soil simulant (LSS) and used Earth soil (ES; Loess from Shaanxi, China) as a comparison to investigate lung injury mechanisms. METHODS: C5

Transplantation of soil from organic field confers disease suppressive ability to conducive soil.

Organic agriculture is a sustainable method of farming, and confers disease-suppressing abilities to disease-conducive soils via specialized soil microbiomes. This study aimed at transforming a disease-conducive soil from a conventional field into disease-suppressive soil by inoculating soil from an organic field previously established as "disease-suppressive". The effectiveness of the transformed soil was established with the model plant wheat (Triticum aestivum) grown under natural conditions, with regard to its potential in inhibiting fungal phytopathogens, Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium o

Combining Soil Vapor Extraction and Electrokinetics for the Removal of Hexachlorocyclohexanes from Soil.

This paper focuses on the evaluation of the mobility of four hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) isomers by soil vapor extraction (SVE) coupled with direct electrokinetic (EK) treatment without adding flushing fluids. SVE was found to be very efficient and remove nearly 70 % of the four HCH in the 15-days of the tests. The application of electrokinetics produced the transport of HCH to the cathode by different electrochemical processes, which were satisfactorily modelled with a 1-D transport equation. The increase in the electric field led to an increase in the transport of pollutants, although 15 day

[In situ immobilization of Pb and Cd in orchard soil using soil ameliorants].

In situ immobilization of Pb and Cd in soil of two gardens in Golden Orchard of Chongqing was studied using soil ameliorants, which included eight treatments: control, quicklime, superphosphate, organic manure, quicklime + superphosphate, quicklime + organic manure, superphosphate + organic manure, and quicklime + superphosphate + organic manure. The results showed that all ameliorant treatments could decrease soil acidity in both the loquat garden and peach garden except the superphosphate treatment. Compared with the control, the soil pH in the two gardens increased by 0. 93 and 0. 79 with q

The Impacts of Soil Fertility and Salinity on Soil Nitrogen Dynamics Mediated by the Soil Microbial Community Beneath the Halophytic Shrub Tamarisk.

Nitrogen (N) is one of the most common limiting nutrients for primary production in terrestrial ecosystems. Soil microbes transform organic N into inorganic N, which is available to plants, but soil microbe activity in drylands is sometimes critically suppressed by environmental factors, such as low soil substrate availability or high salinity. Tamarisk (Tamarix spp.) is a halophytic shrub species that is widely distributed in the drylands of China; it produces litter enriched in nutrients and salts that are thought to increase soil fertility and salinity under its crown. To elucidate the effe

The toxicity of neodymium substances to soil invertebrates in a boreal soil, and the impacts of soil type, aging, and leaching on metal bioavailability and toxicity.

A clear gap in ecotoxicological data was identified regarding the impacts of the technologically critical lanthanide neodymium (Nd) on soil invertebrates in boreal soil. To address this gap, two inorganic metal salts (NdCl3 and Nd2(SO4)3), an organometallic compound Nd-2-ethylhexanoate (Nd-2-EHA) and its organic component 2-ethylhexanoic acid (2-EHA) were examined. Toxicity exposures were conducted using the earthworm Dendrodrilus rubidus, the collembolan Proisotoma minuta, and the oribatid mite Oppia nitens, in two Canadian boreal soil horizons (i.e., organic and mineral), using standardized

Mechanisms of Long-Term Nanoplastic Release in Soil and Their Interaction with Soil Colloids.

The quantification of nanoplastic retention in soils and release mechanisms mediated by soil colloids remains challenging. This study used palladium-labeled nanoplastics (Pd-NPs) in column experiments to investigate their retention and potential long-term release, focusing on interactions with soil colloids. Pd-NPs were primarily immobilized through low energy barriers related to charge heterogeneity or nanoscale roughness, but also influenced by blocking, ripening, charge reversal, and cation bridging. These interactions limited particle release under steady-state conditions or flow interrupt

Blended soil amendments: A viable strategy to reduce soluble phosphorus in soils.

Phosphorus (P) loss from soils can contribute significantly toward P enrichment in water bodies, impairing water quality. Application of soil amendments is a viable strategy to decrease soluble P in surface soils. Since soluble P is reduced through different mechanisms that are amendment-specific, blended amendments could be a better approach than single amendment applications; however, very little information is available on blended amendment effects in reducing P loss from soils. We compared the effectiveness of gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O), Epsom salt (MgSO4·7H2O), and alum [Al2(SO4)3·18H2O] applied
