Spatial trend and pollution assessment of total mercury and methylmercury pollution in the Pearl River Delta soil, South China.

Total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) were measured in large number of soil samples collected from areas with different types of land use, different depth in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) of South China. THg and MeHg concentrations ranged from 16.7 to 3320ngg(-1) and 0.01 to 1.34ngg(-1), respectively. THg levels are highest in the top 0-20cm soil layer, and decrease from the surface to bottom layer soil. Spatial variation was observed with different types of land use. Urban parks had the highest concentrations and the other areas tended to decrease in the order of residential areas, indus

Remediation of cadmium and lead polluted soil using thiol-modified biochar.

Thiol-modified rice straw biochar (RS) was prepared by an esterification reaction with β-mercaptoethanol and used for the remediation of Cd and Pb polluted soils. Modified biochar was characterized through elemental analysis, BET analysis, FE-SEM, FT-IR and XPS. These analytical results revealed that thiol groups were successfully grafted onto the surface of the biochar and were involved in metal ion complexation. Batch sorption experiments indicated that Cd2+ and Pb2+ sorption onto RS described well by a pseudo second order kinetic model and a Langmuir isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacit

Modified clay mineral: A method for the remediation of the mercury-polluted paddy soil.

Rice is easy to accumulate mercury (Hg), especially methylmercury (MeHg) with high toxicity, and this leads to a serious health risk for residents in some Hg-polluted areas of Asia. Thus, there is an urgent need to find soil remediation techniques that can both guarantee agricultural production and protect human health in these Hg-contaminated areas. In this study, montmorillonite (Mont) and medical stone (Med) were modified by a thiol-based material (-SH) and by chitosan to obtain modified clay mineral adsorbents. Pot experiments were then performed to explore their ability to reduce the leve

Comparison of different sequential extraction procedures for mercury fractionation in polluted soils.

Three sequential extraction procedures (SEPs), modified Tessier, modified BCR, and CIEMAT, were compared for mercury fractionation in polluted soils. With satisfactory total mercury recovery, the modified Tessier and modified BCR SEPs were comparable with each other in terms of extraction efficiency in equivalent mercury fractions, whereas both SEPs were not as efficient as the CIEMAT SEP. However, the CIEMAT SEP might underestimate the oxidizable mercury fractions due to the humic and fulvic complexes instead of the organic matter of the other two SEPs. For mercury bioavailability identificat

[Effect of the increasing levels of soil radioactive pollution on the biochemical composition of plants].

The study was undertaken to study a relationship between the changes of some parameters of the biochemical and mineral composition of different plants, such as rape, pods, and lentil, and the levels of soil radiation pollution, by using the conventional methods. Radioactive pollution of dark-grey forest soils was found to cause a change in the biochemical composition of plant seeds even at the level of cesium 137 (137Cs) within the present temporary permissible levels (TPL) (600 Bq/kg): there were elevated concentrations of salts of potassium, phosphorus, ammonia nitrogen, catechols, sucrose,

Effectiveness of amendments on the spread and phytotoxicity of contaminants in metal-arsenic polluted soil.

A metal-arsenic polluted soil from sulphide-mine waste was treated, in all possible combinations, with two different amounts of marble sludge (98% CaCO3), compost (41% organic carbon), and Byferrox (70% Fe). Lixiviate and pore water from each treated and untreated soil were analysed, and lettuce-seed bioassays were performed. None of the treatments decreased the electrical conductivity of lixiviates or the concentrations of all pollutants found in both solutions. Marble sludge and compost increased the pH values and decreased the zinc, cadmium, copper, and lead concentrations in both solutions

The effect of earthworms on copper fractionation of freshly and long-term polluted soils.

We investigated the effects of earthworm activity on the bioavailability of Cu in soil. The bioavailable fraction was estimated using sequential extraction, and the results of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) extraction were analyzed for comparison. Changes in the Cu fraction were compared in Cu-spiked soil (high bioavailability) and long-term polluted field soil (low bioavailability) with approximately equivalent total Cu concentrations. Earthworm activity decreased the bioavailable fraction in the Cu-spiked soil, where earthworm body Cu concentrations did not affect the bioavailable

Chromatite Ca[CrO4] in soil polluted with electroplating effluents (Zabierzów, Poland).

Chromatite, Ca[CrO(4)] (space group I41/amd), was found as yellow precipitates between the particles of soil, heavily polluted with chromium(VI)-bearing electroplating effluents and weathered subsoil rocks (marly limestones, marls). X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) have showed the precipitates to be almost pure Ca[CrO(4)]. The chromatite occurs mainly as coatings 5-30 microm large and prismatic grains 20-100 microm long. It was formed and preserved due to dissolution of calcium carbonate by electroplating effluents containing Cr(VI). Al

Behavior of hexavalent chromium in a polluted groundwater: redox processes and immobilization in soils.

This work describes the chemical mechanisms governing transport and reduction of hexavalent chromium in soils of a contaminated industrial waste landfill. Groundwater and soil analyses indicate that the main source of chromium is a slag heap essentially consisting of mill tailings. In the groundwater, downstream migration of Cr(IV) is limited thanks to a redox mechanism involving chromate ions and ferrous ions or Fe(II)-bearing minerals. High Fe2+ concentrations in the groundwater are a result of pyrite residues from old activities at the site. Analyses of soil samples reveal that chromium is

Numerical Modeling of Gentamicin Transport in Agricultural Soils: Implications for Environmental Pollution.

Background/Objectives: In recent years, the discharge of antibiotics into rivers and irrigation canals has increased. However, few studies have addressed the impact of these compounds on agricultural fields that use such water to meet crop demands. Methods: In this study, the transport of two types of gentamicin (pure gentamicin and gentamicin sulfate) was modeled at concentrations of 150 and 300 μL/L, respectively, in a soil with more than 60 years of agricultural use. Infiltration tests under constant head conditions and gentamicin transport experiments were conducted in acrylic columns meas
