Bacterial wilt is a devastating vascular disease caused by the soil-borne bacterium Ralstonia solanacearum, which invades and blocks the xylem of susceptible plants, especially economically important solanaceous crops. In addition to classical plant defense hormones, recent research has focused on understanding the role of auxin as a key and continuous regulator of infection and development. Auxin connects changes during infection to root development and the progression of bacterial wilt disease. The auxin related shift in plant hormone patterns associated with root development has been observ

The Morelloid clade (black nightshades) is one of the most strongly supported clades within the megadiverse Solanum genus. It comprises 76 globally distributed, non-spiny herbaceous and suffrutescent species. While often erroneously considered poisonous weeds, several species are economically important as orphan crops. The clade is closely related to tomato and potato but, due to a lack of focused breeding efforts, remains a putative reservoir of genetic diversity for crop improvement. Despite this potential, we lack fundamental knowledge on the evolution of the Morelloid clade. The group incl

The angiosperm calyces display considerable diversity and have adaptive functions. However, the evolutionary trajectories and underlying mechanisms of calyx morphological diversity remain unclear. In this study, ancestral state reconstruction revealed that the abscised calyx was ancestral; however, most extant angiosperms exhibited persistent calyces showing notable variation in size. Remarkably, the Solanaceae family may represent a miniature reflecting the calyx diversity of angiosperms. Distinct from Solanum and Capsicum, Physalis fruits featured a morphological novelty known as inflated ca

Antifungal resistance has often been found in animal sporotrichosis in Southern Brazil. The biological potential of compounds from plants of the Solanaceae family against infectious diseases is known, however, it is still unknown against Sporothrix brasiliensis. This study evaluated the anti-Sporothrix brasiliensis activity, synergism, cytotoxicity, and action mechanism of steroidal lactones (withanolides) and alkaloids isolated from these plants. Pure compounds of withanolide D (WNOD), physalin F (PHYF), withanicandin (WNIC), nicandin B (NICB), solasonine (SSON), and solamargine (SMAR) were t

Although there are many effective drugs available to treat intestinal worms, the fact remains that they remain out of reach to a majority of the population in many areas of the world. On the other hand, traditional plant-based remedies continue to be an important therapeutic aid for treating worm infections throughout the world, especially in the developing nations. Solanum myriacanthum Dunal is a perennial shrub that is used in the folk medicine of Tangkhul Naga tribe of India for treating intestinal worms. This study evaluates the anthelmintic activity of its ripe fruit extract using experim

Salt stress severely limits crop growth and productivity, particularly in horticultural crops. Cysteine-rich receptor-like kinases (CRKs) are important membrane-associated signaling proteins involved in plant environmental responses; however, their functions in salt stress adaptation in Solanaceae crops remain limited. In this study, a genome-wide identification and comparative analysis of the CRK gene family was performed in pepper (Capsicum annuum), eggplant (Solanum melongena), and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). 37 CRK genes were identified in pepper. Comprehensive analyses, including phylo

Dengue is the most important arthropod-borne viral disease worldwide. Infection with any of the four dengue virus (DENV) serotypes can be asymptomatic or lead to disease with clinical symptoms ranging from undifferentiated and self-limiting fever to severe dengue disease, which can be fatal in some cases. Currently, no specific antiviral compound is available for treating DENV. The aim of this study was to identify compounds in plants from Paraguayan folk medicine with inhibitory effects against DENV. We found high virucidal activity (50% maximal effective concentration (EC50) value of 24.97 µ
