Gibberellic acid-induced generation of hydrogen sulfide alleviates boron toxicity in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) plants.

It was aimed to examine the role of gibberellic acid (GA) induced production of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in alleviating boron toxicity (BT) in tomato plants. Two weeks after germination, a solution consisting of GA (100 mg L-1) was sprayed once a week for 14 days to the leaves of cv. "SC 2121" of tomato under BT stress (BT; 2.0 mM). Before starting BT treatment, half of the seedlings were retained in a solution containing a scavenger of H2S, 0.1 mM hypotaurine (HT), for 12 h. Boron toxicity led to a substantial decrease in dry biomass, leaf water potential, leaf relative water content, chlorophy

Biocontrol effects of bacteria isolated from compost tea against postharvest disease of tomato fruit (Solanum lycopersicum L.).

Prominent postharvest pathogens of tomato fruit include Alternaria spp. and Botrytis cinerea. While the control of such pathogens typically relies on synthetic chemical fungicides preharvest, microbial biocontrol agents are a sustainable and promising alternative postharvest. Bacillus velezensis SH1 and SH2 and Pseudomonas azotoformans SH3 were previously isolated from disease-suppressive compost tea. To evaluate their effectiveness against tomato pathogens, the bacteria, their cell-free culture filtrates and precipitated subfractions were tested against mycelial growth in vitro. Suppressive e

Genome-wide identification and expression analysis of the ZIP (ZRT, IRT-like protein) family in Solanum lycopersicum.

Iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), and copper (Cu) are essential micronutrients for plant growth and development, but their low bioavailability in soil limits crop growth and yield. The ZIP (ZRT/IRT-like protein) family plays critical roles in the uptake and distribution of these divalent metal ions. Here, we performed a genome-wide identification of the ZIP family in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and analyzed their expression profiles under various metal deficiencies. A total of 14 SlZIP genes were identified and classified into three clades based on phylogenetic analysis. Conserved motif

Comparative Effects of Calcium, Boron, and Zinc Inhibiting Physiological Disorders, Improving Yield and Quality of Solanum lycopersicum.

Localized calcium deficiency at the tomato flower end causes a physiological disorder called blossom end rot, resulting in yield losses of up to 50 percent. Fruit cracking is another physiological disorder of tomatoes that most often occurs when the movement of water and solutes to the tomato is protracted or rapid, but the underlying cause of fruit cracking is, again, calcium deficiency. Therefore, the present field experiment was conducted with the aim of increasing yield and reducing physiological disorders in tomatoes with a foliar application of calcium and micronutrients (zinc and boron)

Improving the Postharvest Storage and Quality of Tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum L.) Using Biochar Derived from Spent Tea Leaves.

Ethylene accumulation accelerates the ripening of climacteric fruits and may impair their postharvest quality. This study evaluated biochar produced from spent tea leaves and enclosed in cellulose sachets as a material for reducing ethylene concentration and preserving tomato quality during storage. The biochar was produced by pyrolyzing spent black tea leaves at 400 °C for 10 min. Tomatoes were stored for 18 days at 21 °C in sealed glass chambers containing sachets with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7.5, or 10 g of biochar, with a treatment without biochar serving as the control. After 6, 12, and 18 days, e

Identifying S-nitrosylated proteins and unraveling S-nitrosoglutathione reductase-modulated sodic alkaline stress tolerance in Solanum lycopersicum L.

S-nitrosylation, regulated by S-nitrosoglutathione reductase (GSNOR), is considered as an important route for nitric oxide (NO)-modulated stress tolerance in plants. However, genetic evidence for the GSNOR-mediated integrated regulation of S-nitrosylation and plant stress response remains elusive until now. In the present study, we used a site-specific nitrosoproteomic approach to identify 334 endogenously S-nitrosylated proteins with 425 S-nitrosylated sites from the wild type (WT) and GSNOR-knockdown (G) tomato plants under both control (C) and sodic alkaline stress (S) conditions.
