BACKGROUND: Access to adequate sanitation remains a critical public health challenge in Somalia, where a large portion of the population relies on unimproved facilities due to persistent conflict, climate shocks, and political instability. This reliance contributes to a high burden of waterborne diseases. This study aimed to assess the spatial distribution of unimproved sanitation and identify its individual and community-level determinants using recent national data to inform targeted interventions.
METHODS: This study is a secondary analysis of the 2022 Somalia Integrated Household Budget S

Congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) is a serious condition with a high rate of morbidity. It is currently a rare disorder, especially in developed countries, because of universal vaccination campaigns. However, it remains a public health concern in developing countries. Here, we report a case of congenital rubella syndrome in a mother who did not receive any prenatal care or had a known history of vaccination. He is a term male infant, and the infant's positive rubella IgM confirmed the diagnosis. The baby had a bilateral cataract, convulsions, Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA)-related cardiomegaly

BACKGROUND: For >2 decades, conflicts and recurrent natural disasters have maintained Somalia in a chronic humanitarian crisis. For nearly 5 years, 1 million children <10 years have not had access to lifesaving health services, including vaccination, resulting in the accumulation by 2012 of the largest geographically concentrated cohort of unvaccinated children in the world. This article reviews the epidemiology, risk, and program response to what is now known as the 2013 wild poliovirus (WPV) outbreak in Somalia and highlights the challenges that the program will face in making Somalia free o

INTRODUCTION: Mobile medical clinics were established by an international medical relief organization to provide health care to victims of the war in Somalia. The study's purpose was to examine the prevalence of diseases seen and the effectiveness of mobile medical clinics, and to evaluate military support in security and care provisions.
METHODS: This is a descriptive case series conducted over a 6-month period. Physicians determined clinical diagnoses, and clinic personnel assigned security scores (one to five) based on: 1) crowd control; 2) the incidence of looting; and 3) threats of viole

The prevalence of viral and bacterial sexually transmitted diseases were studied in 101 men attending a dermatovenereal outpatient clinic in Mogadishu. A control group of 103 healthy adult men were included for the serological part of the study. Serological markers of hepatitis B virus (HBV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), cytomegalovirus (CMV) and herpes simplex virus (HSV) were studied. All sera were tested for syphilis markers. HBV serum markers were detected in 84% of the men in the study group and 66% of the healthy controls (P less than 0.005). Hepatitis B virus carriers were detect

INTRODUCTION: Cholera remains a substantial public health challenge in Somalia. Ongoing droughts in the country have caused significant outbreaks which have negatively affected the lives of many individuals and overwhelmed health facilities. We aimed to estimate the costs associated with cholera cases for households and health facilities in Somalia.
METHODS: This cost-of-illness study was conducted in five cholera treatment centres in Somalia and 400 patients treated in these facilities. Data collection took place during October and November 2023. Given that a significant portion of the patie

BACKGROUND: Somalia reported repeated cholera outbreaks between 2017 and 2019. These outbreaks were attributed to multiple risk factors which made response challenging.
AIMS: To describe lessons from the preparedness and response to the cholera outbreaks in Somalia between 2017 and 2019.
METHODS: We reviewed outbreak response reports, surveillance records and preparedness plans for the cholera outbreaks in Somalia from January 2017 to December 2019 and other relevant literature. We present data on cholera-related response indicators including cholera cases and deaths and case fatality rates

The resistance to antibiotics of 240 Shigella strains isolated in Somalia from 1973 to 1976 was studied. Many strains, particularly those of Shigella dysenteriae type 1, were found to be resistant to more than one drug. In view of their resistance to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, tetracycline, and sulfonamides, it is suggested that polymyxin B or M sulfate - which have proved to be effective in vivo - should be used for the treatment of clinically typical cases of bacillary dysentery.

OBJECTIVES: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a severe but poorly documented threat in Somalia due to its fragmented healthcare system. This study reviews AMR prevalence and clinical impact in Somalia, comparing the findings to regional trends to address this critical data gap.
METHODS: This study was a systematic literature review of antimicrobial susceptibility patterns in Somalia. Data on resistance rates for common Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria were extracted, calculated as a proportion of resistant isolates, and then narratively synthesized in summary tables.
RESULTS: The dat

Within a survey of parasitic infections in wild mammals of Somalia, during the first semester of 1983 and the second of 1984, endoparasites were collected from 11 host species: Gazella soemmeringi, Gazella spekei, Madoqua saltiana, Phacochoerus aethiopicus, Xerus rutilus, Lepus sp., Genetta genetta, Herpestes (Galerella) sanguineus, Felis sylvestris libyca, Felis caracal, Canis mesomelas. A total of 22 species of helminths (20 nematode and 2 metacestode species) were identified. Lepus sp. is a new host for Heteroxinema (P.) proboscidiphora and Herpestes sanguineus for Oxinema sp. A survey on intestinal parasitism was carried out by microscopic examination of stool specimens from 517 children (0 to 16 years old) or from mothers living in two rural towns in Somalia. Burao represented the hot and dry region in the north and Kismayo the more humid area in the south. The overall prevalances of intestinal parasitism were 48 and 88%, respectively. Protozoal infestation was found in 46% (potentially pathogenic protozoa in 20%) in Burao and 37% (potentially pathogenic protozoa in 17%) in Kismayo. In contrast a major difference between the two towns was observed with helminthic

Dengue virus (DENV) is widely distributed across Africa but underreported due to limited surveillance and diagnostic capacity. Under an acute febrile illness surveillance protocol, we collected and screened 374 samples from patients with fever in Mogadishu, Somalia. Samples were screened for DENV serotypes using real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, and positive samples were sequenced and phylogenetically analyzed. We identified 55 samples containing orthoflavivirus RNA (14.7%). Of these 55 samples, three dengue serotypes, DENV serotype 1 (DENV-1, n = 24), DENV serotype 2

BACKGROUND: Fourteen-years after the last Rift Valley fever (RVF) virus (RVFV) outbreak, Somalia still suffers from preventable transboundary diseases. The tradition of unheated milk consumption and handling of aborted materials poses a public health risk for zoonotic diseases. Limited data are available on RVF and Brucella spp. in Somali people and their animals. Hence, this study has evaluated the occurrence of RVFV and Brucella spp. antibodies in cattle, goats and sheep sera from Afgoye and Jowhar districts of Somalia.
METHODS: Serum samples from 609 ruminants (201 cattle, 203 goats and 20

Epidemics of a malaria-like illness affected several thousand residents of the Dam Camp, a refugee camp near Hargeysa in Somalia, during 1985, 1986, and 1987. The disease was characterized by fever, chills, sweats, headache, back and joint pains for as long as 10 days in some patients. Blood smears from acutely ill patients were negative for malaria. Of 28 acute and 10 convalescent sera tested by the indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) and by the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) tests, all were negative for antibody to Rift Valley fever, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, Sindbis, Chikungunya, y

Somalia, ravaged by conflict since 1991, has areas endemic for visceral leishmaniasis (VL), a deadly parasitic disease affecting the rural poor, internally displaced, and pastoralists. Very little is known about VL burden in Somalia, where the protracted crisis hampers access to health care. We reviewed evidence about VL epidemiology in Somalia and appraised control options within the context of this fragile state's health system. VL has been reported in Somalia since 1934 and has persisted ever since in foci in the southern parts of the country. The only feasible VL control option is early di
