Infection of the gastric antrum by Helicobacter pylori is associated with recurrent duodenal ulcer disease but the mechanism of ulcerogenesis is unclear. We have compared the expression of somatostatin receptor (sstr) subtypes with the outcome of somatostatin receptor scintigraphy and the effect of somatostatin receptor activation in patients with disseminated carcinoid tumours. Antral gastrin and somatostatin gene expression during starvation and after refeeding with liquid meals of varying composition were studied.
