The rationality involved in the popular use of coffee (Coffea sp) and sunflower seed (Helianthus annuus) for the treatment of vitiligo: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Vitiligo is a dermatological disease that affects about 0.38% to 2.9% of the world population. Currently, the main treatments used for vitiligo involve the use of topical drugs such as corticosteroids and calcineurin inhibitors, phototherapy, systemic treatment with steroids and even surgical grafts and, in acute cases, depigmenting treatments. Natural products are an alternative for the treatment of vitiligo: mamacadela (Brosimum gaudichaudii), a plant rich in furanocoumarins, and sowthistle (Sonchus oleraceus), rich in phenolic substances, are already used to treat vitiligo. Regulation on microbial composition, serotonergic synapse, and apoptotic signaling pathway by extracts fromSonchus brachyotus DC. (SBE) to improve ethanol-induced acute oxidative stress in mice.

BACKGROUND: Oxidative stress has been firmly established as a pivotal contributor to the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes mellitus, Alzheimer's disease, and other multifactorial disorders. Our previous findings have demonstrated the extracts from Sonchus brachyotus DC. (SBE) mitigates intestinal oxidative stress through interactions between the oxidative stress biomarkers and gut microbiota. However, we did not focus on the mechanism by which SBE exerts antioxidant stress effects through regulating metabolites and genes, nor the correlation between the two and gut microbiot

Quantitative indices reveal the importance of medicinal plants in traditional healthcare from rural arid region.

In the present study, quantitative ethnobotanical knowledge of medicinal plants utilized by the local communities for treating different human ailments in selected rural villages of Punjab, Pakistan has been documented. Semi-structured interviews and field surveys were employed to conduct field investigations from March 2024 to April 2025, with a total of 105 informants aged 18-70 years. The total number of plant species recorded and reported for the cure of 14 human ailments was 50 belonging to 25 families. Fabaceae was the dominant family with 6 species, among the documented families. The mo

The antibacterial and antihemolytic activities assessment of zinc oxide nanoparticles synthesized using plant extracts and gamma irradiation against the uro-pathogenic multidrug resistant Proteus vulgaris.

In the case of Proteus vulgaris infection, the increased occurrence of multidrug-resistance strains has become a critical challenge in the treatment of urinary tract diseases. Therefore, using plant extracts as eco-friendly antibacterial provides an attractive solution to battle bacterial infection. The current study investigates the antibacterial and antihemolytic activity of nine medicinal plant extracts against P. vulgaris. Citrus limon extract at 150 µg/ml exhibited the highest antimicrobial action against P. vulgaris (the inhibition zone diameter; 22.7 mm). Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO N

Erythema multiforme due to contact with weeds: a recurrence after patch testing.

Erythema multiforme (EM) as a complication of patch testing (PT) is rare. A 52-year-old woman with a 13-year history of episodes of EM, after contact with weeds during home gardening, had had no recent history of herpes simplex, other infection, drug ingestion or vaccination. On examination, EM lesions were distributed on the exposed skin. 5 weeks after complete resolution, PT and photopatch testing (PPT) were done with fresh plants she brought in. She was PT with a standard series and the Hermal-Trolab plants, woods, tars, balsams and flavors series. Intradermal testing, with a 3 + reaction t

Efficient discrimination of natural stereoisomers of chicoric acid, an HIV-1 integrase inhibitor.

Plants from the Asteraceae family are known to contain a wide spectrum of phytochemicals with various nutraceutical properties. One important phytochemical, chicoric acid (CA), is reported to exist in plants, such as Sonchus oleraceus and Bidens pilosa, as stereoisomers. These CA molecules occur either as the naturally abundant RR-chicoric acid (RR-CA), or the less abundant RS-chicoric acid (RS-CA), also known as meso-chicoric acid. To date, little is known about the biological activity of RS-CA, but there is evidence of its anti-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) properties. In this study, a

Rhabdovirus encoded glycoprotein induces and harnesses host antiviral autophagy for maintaining its compatible infection.

Macroautophagy/autophagy has been recognized as a central antiviral defense mechanism in plant, which involves complex interactions between viral proteins and host factors. Rhabdoviruses are single-stranded RNA viruses, and the infection causes serious harm to public health, livestock, and crop production. However, little is known about the role of autophagy in the defense against rhabdovirus infection by plant. In this work, we showed that Rice stripe mosaic cytorhabdovirus(RSMV) activated autophagy in plants and that autophagy served as an indispensable defense mechanism during RSMV infectio

Chemopreventive effect of modified zeng-sheng-ping on oral squamous cell carcinoma by regulating tumor associated macrophages through targeting tnf alpha induced protein 6.

BACKGROUND: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common malignancy of the head and neck. Zeng-Sheng-Ping, composed of Sophora tonkinensis Gagnep., Bistorta officinalis Delarbre, Sonchus arvensis L., Prunella vulgaris L., Dioscorea bulbifera L., and Dictamnus dasycarpus Turcz., was regarded as an anti-cancer drug with significant clinical efficacy, but was discontinued due to liver toxicity. Our research group developed a modified Zeng-Sheng-Ping (ZSP-M) based on original Zeng-Sheng-Ping that exhibited high efficiency and low toxicity in preliminary investigations, although its pharm

In Vitro Anti-Leishmanial Assessment of Some Medicinal Plants Collected from Al Qassim, Saudi Arabia.

PURPOSE: In the present work, a group of nine medicinal plants (Sonchus oleraceus, Echinops spinosissimus, Trichodesma africana, Pergularia tomentosa, Teucrium oliverianum, Blepharis ciliaris, Citrllus colocynthis, Cleome amblyocarpa and Aerva javanica) from eight different families were investigated for their in vitro anti-leishmanial activity against the promastigote and amastigote stages of Leishmania major. L. major is the causative agent of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) which is one of the major health problems in Saudi Arabia and neighboring countries such as Iraq and Iran. However, the c

The Herba Patriniae (Caprifoliaceae): A review on traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology and quality control.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Herba Patriniae has been used for thousands of years in China as a traditional Chinese medicine with heat-clearing and detoxicating effects. It is applied widly for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, diarrhea, acute hepatitis, pelvic inflammatory disease and ulcerative colitis in clinic. Two species, namely Patrinia scabiosaefolia Fisch. (PS) and Patrinia villosa Juss. (PV) from the Caprifoliaceae family, are considered as Herba Patriniae in the pharmaceutical industry. AIM OF THE REVIEW: This paper aims to comprehensively outline the traditional uses, bota

Advances in nanomaterial-mediated CRISPR/Cas delivery: from lipid nanoparticles to vesicle-derived systems.

Gene and genome editing therapies are increasingly connected with nanomaterials, which protect and transport fragile nucleic acids and CRISPR/Cas systems through biological barriers safely and accurately. This review discusses how different nanocarriers, including lipid-based, polymeric, inorganic, and vesicle-derived systems, can improve delivery efficiency, cell targeting, endosomal escape, and intracellular movement for gene and genome editing. It summarizes findings from early clinical and preclinical studies, comparing several carrier types such as ionizable lipid nanoparticles, polymeric
